Impact of Testosterone Deficiency and Testosterone Therapy on Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men with Metabolic Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a skin disease characterized by blistering and desquamation caused by exfoliative toxins (ETs) of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Although many countries show predominance of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA), cases of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) have been reported. METHODS: Twenty-six children aged <15 years diagnosed with SSSS from January 2010 to December 2017 from three hospitals were included. S. aureus isolates from cases were analyzed for multilocus sequence types and ETs. Medical records were reviewed for

Australian Meningococcal Surveillance Programme Annual Report, 2024.

In Australia, both probable and laboratory-confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) are reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS). When compared to 2023, the number of IMD notifications in 2024 decreased by 5% to 136. IMD was confirmed by laboratory testing in 136/136 (100%) of 2024 IMD cases, with 63% (86/136) diagnosed by bacterial culture and 37% (50/136) by nucleic acid amplification testing. The serogroup was determined for 96% of laboratory-confirmed cases (130/136): serogroup B (MenB) accounted for 84% of infections (109/130); MenY for 14% (

Ionizing radiation and genetic risks. I. Epidemiological, population genetic, biochemical and molecular aspects of Mendelian diseases.

This paper reviews the currently available information on naturally occurring Mendelian diseases in man; it is aimed at providing a background and framework for discussion of experimental data on radiation-induced mutations (papers II and III) and for the estimation of the risk of Mendelian disease in human populations exposed to ionizing radiation (paper IV). Current consensus estimates indicate that a total of about 125 per 10(4) livebirths are directly affected by one or another naturally occurring Mendelian disease (autosomal dominants, 95/10(4); X-linked ones, 5/10(4); and autosomal reces

Clonal dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in outpatients as fecal-carriages: predominance of the high-risk clone ST231.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) poses a critical threat to public health due to its ability to accumulate multidrug-resistance (MDR) and to spread silently via gastrointestinal carriage. While hospital-associated CRKP has been well documented, little is known about its prevalence and clonal dynamics among outpatients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 300 stool samples were collected from outpatients without any gastrointestinal symptoms from April to September 2023. K. pneumoniae isolates were recovered on imipenem-supplemented MacConkey agar and identifie

Digital Multiplex Ligation-Dependent Probe Amplification for Detection of Key Copy Number Alterations in T- and B-Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Recurrent and clonal genetic alterations are characteristic of different subtypes of T- and B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and several subtypes are strong independent predictors of clinical outcome. A next-generation sequencing-based multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification variant (digitalMLPA) has been developed enabling simultaneous detection of copy number alterations (CNAs) of up to 1000 target sequences. This novel digitalMLPA assay was designed and optimized to detect CNAs of 56 key target genes and regions in ALL. A set of digital karyotyping probes has been included for

In vivo development of daptomycin resistance in vancomycin-susceptible methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus severe infections previously treated with glycopeptides.

Our aim was to describe the clinical and microbiological features of four cases of severe vancomycin-susceptible methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in which the vancomycin non-susceptibility development and daptomycin resistance occurred under therapy with teicoplanin (three cases) and daptomycin switched to vancomycin (one case). Clinical data were retrospectively reviewed. On nine clinical epidemiologically unrelated daptomycin-susceptible (DAP-S) and daptomycin-resistant (DAP-R) MRSA, we performed: (i) DAP-VAN-TEC-CFX-RIF minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs);

The influence of target population on nonculture-based detection of markers of Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial resistance.

BACKGROUND: With treatment options for gonorrhoea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) diminishing, strengthening antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance is paramount. METHODS: In this study, we investigated polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods, in parallel with N. gonorrhoeae multi-antigen sequence typing (NG-MAST), for direct detection of four N. gonorrhoeae chromosomal mechanisms associated with emerging resistance to extended spectrum cephalosporins using noncultured samples: an adenine deletion in the mtrR promoter, a mosaic penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2, an A501V PBP2 mutation, and

Comparative genomics of Enterococcus spp. isolated from bovine feces.

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus is ubiquitous in nature and is a commensal of both the bovine and human gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is also associated with clinical infections in humans. Subtherapeutic administration of antibiotics to cattle selects for antibiotic resistant enterococci in the bovine GI tract. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) may be present in enterococci following antibiotic use in cattle. If located on mobile genetic elements (MGEs) their dissemination between Enterococcus species and to pathogenic bacteria may be promoted, reducing the efficacy of antibiotics. RESULTS: We pr

Genetic profiles and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae non-PCV10 serotype isolates recovered from meningitis cases in Salvador, Brazil.

In 2010, the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) was introduced into the Brazilian childhood vaccination programme. Concerns have been raised that non-vaccine serotypes could increase in prevalence and reduce the benefits of vaccination; therefore, we examined non-PCV10 isolates recovered from meningitis during pre- (January 2008-May 2010) and post-vaccine (June 2010-December 2012) periods. Surveillance for pneumococcal meningitis was established at the Reference Hospital of Infectious Diseases in Salvador, Brazil. Serotypes were determined by multiplex PCR and/or Quellung reactio

High Rates of Antimicrobial Resistance and Emergence of High-Risk Clones in Community-Acquired Uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common bacterial infection globally and is often treated empirically in community settings, contributing to antimicrobial resistance. Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) is the leading cause of community-acquired UTIs (CA-UTIs), yet data on its clinical and molecular characteristics remain limited. To investigate the clinical and microbiological features of CA-UTIs, focusing on antimicrobial resistance, phylogenetic groups, virulence genes, and clonal profiles. Randomly selected E. coli isolates from CA-UTI cases underwent antimicrobial susceptibility testing
