Occupational swine exposure and Hepatitis E virus, Leptospira, Ascaris suum seropositivity and MRSA colonization in Austrian veterinarians, 2017-2018-A cross-sectional study.

We investigated the prevalence of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV), Leptospira and Ascaris suum (A. suum) seropositivity, and of nasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization among Austrian practising veterinarians, and assessed the association with occupational swine livestock exposure. The 261 participants completed a questionnaire on demographics, intensity of occupational swine livestock contact and glove use during handling animals and their secretions. Participants' blood samples were tested for HEV, Leptospira and A. suum seropositivity and nasal swabs cultured for MRSA.

Agreement of the Kato-Katz test established by the WHO with samples fixed with sodium acetate analyzed at 6 months to diagnose intestinal geohelminthes.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Kato-Katz test (WHO version) with stool samples from a rural area, fixed with sodium acetate (SAF). The Kato-Katz test was used to compare unfixed samples (conventional test) with the same samples containing SAF fixative at time 0 and at 6 months. The study included stools from 154 subjects. A marginally statistically significant decrease in prevalence was estimated only for hookworm, when comparing unfixed samples versus the SAF fixed samples read at 6 months (p=0.06). A significant reduction in parasite load was found for hookworm

Patterns and Risk Factors of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis Among Orang Asli Subgroups in Peninsular Malaysia.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to provide comprehensive data on the patterns and associated risk factors of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections among five Orang Asli subgroups in Peninsular Malaysia. The overall prevalence of STH infections was 59.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 56.1-63.7%). Trichuris trichiura (54.3%; 95% CI = 50.4-58.2%) was the predominant species followed by Ascaris lumbricoides (26.7%; 95% CI = 23.3-30.1%) and hookworm (9.1%; 95% CI = 6.9-11.3%). This study showed diversity for STH infections by subgroup with poverty and personal sanitary behavior as impo

Localization of multiple quantitative trait loci influencing susceptibility to infection with Ascaris lumbricoides.

A linkage-based genome scan of 1,258 members of a single pedigree of the Jirel population of Nepal localized 6 potential quantitative trait loci (QTLs) influencing susceptibility to infection with Ascaris lumbricoides, the most common soil-transmitted intestinal helminth. Three QTLs exhibited genomewide significance, including QTLs on chromosomes 13 (logarithm of the odds ratio [LOD] score, 3.37; genomewide P = .013, 8 (LOD score, 3.03; genomewide P = .031), and 11 (LOD score, 3.19; genomewide P = .020). Another QTL on chromosome 1 approached significance (LOD score, 2.72; genomewide P = .067)

Cure and reinfection patterns of geohelminthic infections after treatment in communities inhabiting the tropical rainforest of Assam, India.

Mass de-worming targeted at socio-economically poor communities can be considered as an option for communities living in the tropical forests of Assam who do not have access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation, and consequently have a higher risk of suffering from geohelminthic infection and associated morbidity. A random sample of 265 subjects was included in this study (134 males and 131 females). The chemotherapeutic regimen followed was a single dose of albendazole 400 mg. Stools samples were collected in 10% formol-saline for detection of infection before treatment. Post-treatmen

Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 310 diseases and injuries, 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for diseases and injuries at the global, regional, and national scale over the period of 1990 to 2015. METHODS: We estimated incid

Market integration and soil-transmitted helminth infection among the Shuar of Amazonian Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections have many negative health outcomes (e.g., diarrhea, nutritional deficiencies) that can also exacerbate poverty. These infections are generally highest among low-income populations, many of which are also undergoing market integration (MI; increased participation in a market-based economy). Yet the direct impact of MI-related social and environmental changes on STH infection patterns is poorly understood, making it unclear which lifestyle factors should be targeted to better control disease spread. This cross-sectional study examines if hou

Predicting frequency distribution and influence of sociodemographic and behavioral risk factors of Schistosoma mansoni infection and analysis of co-infection with intestinal parasites.

Geospatial analysis was used to study the epidemiology of Schistosoma mansoni, intestinal parasites and co-infections in an area (Ilha das Flores) in Sergipe, Brazil. We collected individually georeferenced sociodemographic, behavioral and parasitological data from 500 subjects, analyzed them by conventional statistics, and produced risk maps by Kernel estimation. The prevalence rates found were: S. mansoni (24.0%), Trichuris trichiura (54.8%), Ascaris lumbricoides (49.2%), Hookworm (17.6%) and Entamoeba histolytica (7.0%). Only 59/500 (11.8%) individuals did not present any of these infection

Experimental Ascaris suum infection in the pig: protective memory response after three immunizations and effect of intestinal adult worm population.

The protective immune response to larval migration in pigs, with or without adult intestinal worm populations, 10 weeks after 3 weekly Ascaris suum inoculations, was studied in 45 pigs. Controlled adult worm populations were achieved by oral transfer of 10 adult worms to previously immunized pigs after anthelmintic drenching. A significant reduction in larval recovery from lungs on day 7, and small intestine on day 14, was observed in immunized pigs compared with previously uninfected control pigs after challenge inoculation. The strong anamnestic response to larval migration was characterized

Baseline health conditions in selected communities of northern Sierra Leone as revealed by the health impact assessment of a biofuel project.

BACKGROUND: As biofuel projects may be associated with positive and negative effects on people's health and wellbeing, a health impact assessment was performed for the Addax Bioenergy Sierra Leone (ABSL) project. We present data from the baseline health survey, which will provide a point of departure for future monitoring and evaluation activities. METHODS: In December 2010, a cross-sectional survey was carried out in eight potentially affected communities. A broad set of clinical and parasitological indicators were assessed using standardised, quality-controlled procedures, including anthrop

Antigens from Ascaris suum trigger in vitro macrophage NO production.

SUMMARY We investigated the in vitro effect of total excretory/secretory and somatic antigens from Ascaris suum adults (ESA and SA) and larvae 3 (ESL3 and SL3), and of 10 purified protein fractions from ESA components on rat alveolar macrophage nitric oxide (NO) production. Our results showed that in vitro incubation of macrophages with SA and SL3 antigens of A. suum did not result in NO release from cells, whereas incubation with ESA or ESL3 antigens resulted in the stimulation of NO production by these cells, both in a specific (inhibited by L-NAME and L-canavanine) and dose-dependent manner

Changes in specific B cells and the dissemination of the primed state in vivo following antigenic stimulation by different mucosal routes.

Immunologic dogma holds that the adaptive and long-term potential of the antibody response is fashioned by antigen-dependent, selective clonal proliferation of specific B cells and the retention of some which may undergo a second round of antigen-stimulated clonal expansion with antibody production. Apparently, the short-term, immediate consequences of an antibody response depend on the mix of isotypes displayed in vivo upon exposure to antigen. This latter seems to be clearly regulated by T cells, but it is also likely that the isotype potential of a B cell population and its future possible

T helper cell type 2 responsiveness predicts future susceptibility to gastrointestinal nematodes in humans.

Some humans are persistently more susceptible to gastrointestinal nematodes than others. Here, for the first time, susceptibility to reinfection has been linked to host cytokine responses. Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura abundance was assessed immediately before and 8-9 months after deworming in a Cameroonian population (starting n=191). Profiles of whole-blood cytokine responses to parasite antigens (for interleukin [IL]-5, IL-13, IL-10, IL-12p40, tumor necrosis factor- alpha , and interferon- gamma), assayed before treatment, were significantly related both to an overall measure

The ABA-1 allergen of Ascaris lumbricoides: sequence polymorphism, stage and tissue-specific expression, lipid binding function, and protein biophysical properties.

The ABA-1 protein of Ascaris lumbricoides (of humans) and Ascaris suum (of pigs) is abundant in the pseudocoelomic fluid of the parasites and also appears to be released by the tissue-parasitic larvae and the adult stages. The genes encoding the polyprotein precursor of ABA-1 (aba-1) were found to be arranged similarly in the two taxa, comprising tandemly repeating units encoding a large polyprotein which is cleaved to yield polypeptides of approximately 15 kDa which fall into 2 distinct classes, types A and B. The polyprotein possibly comprises only 10 units. The aba-1 gene of A. lumbricoides
