Technology-Based Interventions for Substance Use Treatment Among People Who Identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Native: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment outcomes are persistent, especially among underrepresented minority (URM) populations. Technology-based interventions (TBIs) for substance use treatment show promise in reducing barriers to evidence-based treatment, yet no studies have described how TBIs may impact racial or ethnic health equity. OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether TBIs in substance use treatment research promote health equity among people who identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Na

The toxicological significance of post-mortem drug concentrations in bile.

CONTEXT: Some authors have proposed that post-mortem drug concentrations in bile are useful in estimating concentrations in blood. Both The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT) and the US Federal Aviation Administration recommend that samples of bile should be obtained in some circumstances. Furthermore, standard toxicological texts compare blood and bile concentrations, implying that concentrations in bile are of forensic value. AIM: To review the evidence on simultaneous measurements of blood and bile drug concentrations reported in the medical literature. METHODS: W

Development of an UPLC-MS/MS method for the analysis of 16 synthetic opioids in segmented hair, and evaluation of the polydrug history in fentanyl analogue users.

Seizures of synthetic opioids have increased since 2012, with a 45 % increase in synthetic opioid related deaths between 2016 and 2017 in US. Recently, concerns have arisen around these substances and their illicit use also in several European countries. Our aim was to develop and validate an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method for the analysis of 16 synthetic opioids in segmented hair, including fentanyl, norfentanyl, acetylfentanyl, U-47700, AH-7921, acrylfentanyl, crotonylfentanyl, butyrylfentanyl, methoxacetylfentanyl, U-49900, valeryfentany

Neurogenetics of dopaminergic receptor supersensitivity in activation of brain reward circuitry and relapse: proposing "deprivation-amplification relapse therapy" (DART).

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: It is well known that after prolonged abstinence, individuals who use their drug of choice experience a powerful euphoria that often precipitates relapse. While a biological explanation for this conundrum has remained elusive, we hypothesize that this clinically observed "supersensitivity" might be tied to genetic dopaminergic polymorphisms. Another therapeutic conundrum relates to the paradoxical finding that the dopaminergic agonist bromocriptine induces stronger activation of brain reward circuitry in individuals who carry the DRD2 A1 allele compared with DRD2 A2

The Annual American Men's Internet Survey of Behaviors of Men Who Have Sex With Men in the United States: Key Indicators Report 2018.

The American Men's Internet Survey (AMIS) is an annual web-based behavioral survey conducted in the United States of men who have sex with men (MSM). This rapid surveillance report describes the sixth cycle of data collection (September-December 2018; AMIS 2018). The key indicators were the same as those previously reported for past AMIS cycles. The AMIS methodology has not substantively changed since AMIS 2017. MSM were recruited from a variety of websites using banner advertisements and email blasts. In addition, participants from AMIS 2017 who agreed to be recontacted for future research we

Understanding the public health consequences of suspending a rural syringe services program: a qualitative study of the experiences of people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Syringe services programs (SSPs) are evidence-based interventions that are associated with decreases in prevalence and incidence rates of HIV and viral hepatitis among people who inject drugs (PWID). SSPs are also effective conduits to deliver overdose prevention resources among PWID. In December 2015, the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department (KCHD) in West Virginia implemented a SSP; however, the program was indefinitely suspended in early 2018 following policy changes that would have forced the program to operate in ways that conflicted with established best practices.

4-methylmethcathinone. Behavioral and neurochemical consequences of long-term intravenous self-administration of MDMA and its enantiomers by rhesus monkeys.

The effects of self-administered 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on behavior and neurochemistry have not been previously studied in laboratory primates. We investigated the capacity of MDMA and its enantiomers to maintain contingent responding over an extended duration, whether any decrements in the reinforcing effects of these compounds would be observed over time, whether such decrements would be MDMA-selective, and whether any neurochemical correlates could be identified. Animals were previously trained to self-administer cocaine, then exposed to periodic substitutions of various d

Multiyear Wastewater Monitoring of High-Risk Substances Surrounding an Annual Electronic Dance Music Festival, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, 2023-2025: Surveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies involving music festivals (including on-site surveys, drug checking, and wastewater-based analyses) suggest that recreational substance use is common among festivalgoers, though preferred substances and usage may be region- and event-specific. However, multiyear, event-specific wastewater surveillance data in the United States are limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize concentrations of high-risk substances (HRS) and their metabolites in wastewater surrounding an annual electronic dance music (EDM) festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Injection Drug Use Frequency Before and After Take-Home Naloxone Training.

IMPORTANCE: Concerns that take-home naloxone (THN) training may lead to riskier drug use (as a form of overdose risk compensation) remain a substantial barrier to training implementation. However, there was limited good-quality evidence in a systematic review of the association between THN access and subsequent risk compensation behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether THN training is associated with changes in overdose risk behaviors, indexed through injecting frequency, in a cohort of people who inject drugs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used prospectively collected

The Impact of Childhood Emotional Abuse on Pain Interference Among People with Chronic Pain who Inject Drugs in Vancouver, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: High levels of chronic pain interference with daily activities are known to negatively impact quality of life. Although mental health conditions have been associated with pain interference and child abuse, research has been mixed regarding it acting as a mediator, with even less known among people who inject drugs. Therefore, we sought to explore childhood emotional abuse and pain interference among this population. METHODS: Data were derived from two prospective cohort studies of community-recruited people who inject drugs in Vancouver, Canada, between June 2014 and November 2016.

Electroencephalographic Features of Elderly Patients during Anesthesia Induction with Remimazolam: A Substudy of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use is associated with a high disease burden, particularly due to the high risk of blood-borne infections such as viral hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Interventions recommended for the prevention and control of infections associated with drug use include so-called drug consumption rooms (DCRs). A DCR is a professional addiction service where people who use drugs (PWUD) can consume the drug they bring under safer and hygienic conditions. In September 2023, the first DCR in the Czech Republic was opened in Brno as a mobile setting (

'I was like, this is gonna hurt': Implementing self-sampling of dried blood spots to measure HIV viral load.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority men (SMM) with HIV who use stimulants may experience greater difficulties with antiretroviral therapy adherence which amplifies risk for unsuppressed HIV viral load (VL). Remote monitoring of VL could support efforts to rapidly respond to sub-optimal adherence. METHODS: This qualitative study enrolled 24 SMM with HIV who use stimulants to examine experiences with two different dried blood spots (DBS) self-sampling devices (i.e., Tasso-M20 vs. HemaSpot HD) to measure VL. Participants were asked to complete self-sampling of DBS using both devices, and then participat

Safety profiles of methylphenidate, amphetamine, and atomoxetine: analysis of spontaneous reports submitted to the food and drug administration adverse event reporting system.

Background: Methylphenidate, atomoxetine, and Amphetamine are the three most commonly used medications approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, a comprehensive analysis of their safety profiles across various age groups and genders in real-world contexts has yet to be conducted. In this study, a pharmacovigilance analysis was performed using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to examine differences in adverse events between methylphenidate, atomoxetine, and Amphetamine. Incubation of Cue-Induced Craving in Adults Addicted to Cocaine Measured by Electroencephalography.

IMPORTANCE: A common trigger for relapse in drug addiction is the experience of craving via exposure to cues previously associated with drug use. Preclinical studies have consistently demonstrated incubation of cue-induced drug-seeking during the initial phase of abstinence, followed by a decline over time. In humans, the incubation effect has been shown for alcohol, nicotine, and methamphetamine addictions, but not for heroin or cocaine addiction. Understanding the trajectory of cue-induced craving during abstinence in humans is of importance for addiction medicine. OBJECTIVE: To assess cue-

Motivational effects of cannabinoids and opioids on food reinforcement depend on simultaneous activation of cannabinoid and opioid systems.

Strong functional interactions exist between endogenous cannabinoid and opioid systems. Here, we investigated whether cannabinoid-opioid interactions modulate motivational effects of food reinforcement. In rats responding for food under a progressive-ratio schedule, the maximal effort (break point) expended to obtain 45 mg pellets depended on the level of food deprivation, with free-feeding reducing break points and food-deprivation increasing break points. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC; 0.3-5.6 mg/kg intrapeitoneally (i.p.)) and morphine (1-10 mg/kg i.p.) dose-dependently increased break
