Intestinal motility disorders are an important problem in horses and donkeys and this study was carried out in order to evaluate the enteric neurons in animals with and without intestinal disease. Surplus intestinal tissue samples were collected from 28 horses undergoing exploratory laparotomy for colic. In addition, surplus intestinal samples from 17 control horses were collected immediately following humane destruction for clinical conditions not relating to the intestinal tract. Similar samples were also collected during routine post-mortem examinations from 12 aged donkeys; six animals wer

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most commonly diagnosed joint disease in veterinary medicine, with at least 80% of the cases of lameness and joint diseases in companion animals being classified as OA. Sporting and working animals are more predisposed to develop OA since they are exposed to chronic fatigue injuries, leading to bone and muscular tissue damage and failure, resulting in clinical signs. To characterize the clinical signs and diagnostic findings of Police working dogs presenting with bilateral hip OA at the time of diagnosis. Fifty animals were evaluated with a bodyweight ≥ 1

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is one of approximately 2,500 distinct serovars of the genus Salmonella but is exceptional in its wide distribution in the environment, livestock, and wild animals. S Typhimurium causes a large proportion of nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections, accounting for a quarter of infections, second only to S. enterica serovar Enteritidis in incidence. S Typhimurium was once considered the archetypal broad-host-range Salmonella serovar due to its wide distribution in livestock and wild animals, and much of what we know of the interaction of Salmonella with t

In mammals, circadian rhythms in peripheral organs are impaired when animals are maintained in abnormal environmental light-dark cycles such as constant light (LL). This conclusion is based on averaged data from groups of experimental animals sacrificed at each time point. To investigate the effect of LL housing on the peripheral clocks of individual mice, an in vivo imaging system was used to observe the circadian bioluminescence rhythm in peripheral tissues of the liver, kidney, and submandibular salivary gland in PER2::LUCIFERASE knock-in mice. Using this technique, we demonstrated that the

The regional distribution of the peripheral vascular resistance was studied in normotensive and hypertensive Wistar rats. Two models of experimental hypertension were investigated: (I) in 32 animals the right renal artery was constricted by a silver clip (two-kidney Goldblatt hypertension); (II) in 46 animals the left kidney was removed and the right renal artery was clipped as in the first group (one-kidney Goldblatt hypertension). The normotensive control group comprised 61 untreated animals of the same strain and age. The distribution of cardiac output to 14 tissues was determined by means

Coatis [including Nasua nasua, the ring-tailed coati], are medium-sized mammals widely distributed in the Americas. They are social animals, whose normal diet includes insects, fruits, and small vertebrates, and rarely prey on larger sized animals. There are, to our knowledge, no reports in the medical literature of attacks on humans. This report describes a coati attack on 2 children in their home. The children sustained deep scratches and bites. The animal may have injured the humans in a defensive strike, but motivation for attack was uncertain. Coati attacks may occur in places where there

OBJECTIVE: Local application of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSC) represents a novel approach for the management of perianal fistula in patients with Crohn's disease. A randomised study on an animal model was performed to investigate the efficacy and to detect the distribution of implanted ADSCs by bioluminescence (BLI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A caecostomy was used as a fistula model in 32 Lewis rats. The ADSCs were isolated from transgenic donor expressing firefly luciferase. Animals were randomly assigned to groups given injections of 4 × 106 cells (n = 16, group A) or placebo (

BACKGROUND: [corrected] Since Owen first described Trichinella as a human patogen in 1835, the number of organisms comprising this genus has grown dramatically. This etiological agent of human trichinellosis shows worldwide distribution in domestic and/or sylvatic animals.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The aim of the presented paper was to determine the distribution of Trichinella species in wild animals such as red foxes, wolves, wild boars, and domestic pigs in Poland. Muscle samples from diaphragm and forelegs were collected from animals killed by hunters. Muscle larvae were recovered from the musc

Climate change is increasingly recognised as a major driver of infectious disease dynamics, yet its impact on animal health remains understudied compared with its impact on human populations. This systematic review aimed to assess the effects of climate variability and change on the epidemiology of animal infectious diseases, focusing on measurable changes in disease incidence, prevalence, mortality, and geographical distribution. We searched PubMed and CAB Abstracts for studies published between Jan 1, 1970, and Dec 31, 2024, and identified 33 eligible studies that that assessed associations

Leptospirosis is a global zoonotic disease that the transmission is driven by complex geographical and temporal variation in demographics, animal hosts and socioecological factors. This results in complex challenges for the identification of high-risk areas. Spatial and temporal epidemiological tools could be used to support leptospirosis control programs, but the adequacy of its application has not been evaluated. We searched literature in six databases including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus, SciELO and Zoological Record to systematically review and critically assess the use of spat

Trichinosis is a parasitic disease caused by Trichinella spiralis that affects pigs, rodents, and some wild animals. Poor sanitation facilitates the spread of disease in swine, posing a risk to public health. In Mexico, pig farming ranks third in meat production and operates at 3 primary levels: industrial, semi-industrial, and backyard farming. In Mexico, backyard pig farming is a common practice primarily because it provides a source of meat at minimal or no cost. However, these pigs can act as reservoirs, sustaining the parasite's life cycle and potentially introducing it into domestic envi

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emergent arthropodborne virus that is transmitted from bird to bird by mosquitoes. Spillover events occur when infected mosquitoes bite mammals. We created a geopositioned database of WNV presence in Africa and considered reports of the virus in all animal components: reservoirs, vectors, and nonhuman dead-end hosts. We built various biogeographic models to determine which drivers explain the distribution of WNV throughout Africa. Wetlands of international importance for birds accounted for the detection of WNV in all animal components, whereas human-related drivers

Postmortem animal mutilations due to domestic dogs in isolated domestic deaths are taphonomic modifications regularly observed by forensic pathologists. They are rarely described in the literature; however, even though they present specific patterns. Through 41 cases, 10 at the forensic institute in Lille (France) and 31 at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (USA), plus 22 cases from the literature, specific locations and patterns of postmortem scavenging lesions are proposed. These lesions are mainly distributed in three locations: the face, especially the nose and the mouth (

To assess the distribution of Salmonella 4,[5]:i:- subtypes in the Belgian food chain and compare it to the subtypes associated with human infections, a molecular assessment was initiated. Two hundred fifty-three Salmonella isolates serotyped as 4,[5]:i:- during the period 2008-2011 in Belgium and originating from animal productions, food or human clinical samples were analysed by a specific duplex PCR. One hundred ninety-four isolates (76.7%) fit the profile of a S. Typhimurium monophasic variant as defined by the European Food Safety Authority. The other isolates possessed but did not expres

Climate change is likely to change the frequency of extreme weather events, such as tropical cyclones, floods, droughts and hurricanes, and may destabilise and weaken the ecosystem services upon which human society depends. Climate change is also expected to affect animal, human and plant health via indirect pathways: it is likely that the geography of infectious diseases and pests will be altered, including the distribution of vector-borne diseases, such as Rift Valley fever, yellow fever, malaria and dengue, which are highly sensitive to climatic conditions. Extreme weather events might then

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) seroprevalence in Kenya is unknown because of the lack of a practical and accurate diagnostic test or surveillance system. A novel serological assay was used to estimate the seroprevalence of Leishmania-specific antibodies, and Global Information System and spatial clustering techniques were applied to study the presence of spatial clusters in Parkarin and Loboi villages in Baringo District in 2001. VL seroprevalences were 52.5% in Parkarin and 16.9% in Loboi. Significant associations among seropositivity and house construction, age, and proximity to domestic animal

Lice infestations on horses caused by the lice Werneckiella (Damalinia) equi and Haematopinus equi are observed worldwide. In this study, the distribution and clinical manifestations of lice on Icelandic horses were examined. Thirty-eight out of 93 animals (40.86%) were identified as infested with W. equi. Sixty-eight animals (73.12%) presented dermatological lesions associated with lice infestation, while only 32 of these animals presented lice. Six animals had no clinical signs although of being lice-positive, and 19 animals (20.43%) showed neither lice nor clinical manifestations. Lice burd

In the blastula stage ofTriturus alpestris roundish pieces were removed from the animal half of the embryo, which consisted of undetermined ectoderm; some of them could perhaps contain some mesoderm on their vegetal edge. Since the median plane could not be ascertained in this stage, a chance distribution around the animal-vegetal axis has to be assumed. Most of the embryos developed to externally normal larvae. The gut situs of 193 larvae was regular in 97.9% of the cases, median in 0.5% and inverted in 1.5%. This corresponds to the inversion rate of non operated animals. Therefore mechanic def

The first case of myiasis caused by Lucilia caesar (L.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a wild boar, Sus scrofa L. (Artiodactyla: Suidae) is described. The myiasis occurred in October 2019 in Southern Italy and the identification of the agent was based on adult male morphology. The wild boar had a wound on its right side, near the neck, which was largely infested by larvae. The ecology, distribution and current literature status about cases of animal myiasis by this species is also included.

Although there is sufficient information on the pharmacology and therapeutic application of the antimicrobial drugs to permit their effective use, they are still often misused in canine practice. This paper collates the data on drug dose rate/plasma concentration relationships observed in dogs after the administration of specific members of the major antimicrobial drug groups and on the possible impact of drug disposition (distribution and elimination) on therapeutic effect. Some information gleaned from studies in other animal species is added.
