Patient-Reported Functional Impairment Due to Hearing Loss and Tinnitus After Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Cisplatin is widely used and highly ototoxic, but patient-reported functional impairment because of cisplatin-related hearing loss (HL) and tinnitus has not been comprehensively evaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Testicular cancer survivors (TCS) given first-line cisplatin-based chemotherapy completed validated questionnaires, including the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) and Tinnitus Primary Function Questionnaire (TPFQ), each of which quantifies toxicity-specific functional impairment. Spearman correlations evaluated associations between HL and tinnitus severity and leve

Why a Propofol Infusion Should Be the Anesthetic of Choice for Auditory Brainstem Response Testing in Children.

BACKGROUND: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is considered to be relatively resistant to effects of volatile anesthetics. The impact of newer anesthetics on interpretability of ABR testing is unknown. This study compared sevoflurane versus propofol anesthesia on qualitative interpretability of ABR click-testing in children. METHODS: This prospective double-blind crossover study enrolled children (≤18 years old) receiving general anesthesia for elective ABR testing. All subjects received both sevoflurane and propofol anesthesias in the same ABR testing session. Deidentified ABR data w

Protocol for Rapid, Accurate, Electrophysiologic, Auditory Assessment of Infants and Toddlers.

BACKGROUND: Audiologists often lack confidence in results produced by current protocols for diagnostic electrophysiologic testing of infants. This leads to repeat testing appointments and slow protocols which extend the time needed to complete the testing and consequently delay fitting of amplification. A recent publication (Sininger et al50) has shown how new technologies can be applied to electrophysiologic testing systems to improve confidence in results and allow faster test protocols. Average test times for complete audiogram predictions when using new technologies and protocols were foun

Applications of qualitative grounded theory methodology to investigate hearing loss: protocol for a qualitative systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is a chronic condition affecting 12 million individuals in the UK. People with hearing loss regularly experience difficulties interacting in everyday conversations. These difficulties in communication can result in a person with hearing loss withdrawing from social situations and becoming isolated. While hearing loss research has largely deployed quantitative methods to investigate various aspects of the condition, qualitative research is becoming more widespread. Grounded theory is a specific qualitative methodology that has been used to establish novel theories on
