Dietary calcium citrate enhances nutrient digestibility and modulates cecal microbiota function in pre-laying hens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Calcium source and bioavailability are critical determinants of nutrient utilization, gut microbial ecology, and future productivity in laying hens, particularly during the pre-laying period. Organic calcium salts may exert additional functional effects through microbiota modulation beyond mineral supply alone. This study evaluated the effects of replacing calcium carbonate with calcium citrate on nutrient digestibility, cecal microbiota composition, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and predicted microbial metabolic pathways in pre-laying hens. Lactobacillus Modulates the Rumen Microbiota and Transcriptome to Enhance Nutrient Digestion in Yaks Fed High-Concentrate Diets During the Cold Season.

Intensive yak fattening in cold alpine regions requires essential long-term high-concentration feeding, which disrupts rumen microbial homeostasis and causes inefficient digestion of nutrients. Lactobacillus may have probiotic potential for ruminants, yet its regulation of rumen function is poorly understood under high-energy diets. During a 120-day feeding experiment, 120 male Pamir yaks were allocated to four dietary treatments, with LEG and LLG serving as the primary comparison for evaluating 0.02% Lactobacillus supplementation to explore the regulatory effects of Lactobacillus supplementat

Associations of short photoperiod and the male effect with fecal microbiota, metabolomic profiles, serum metabolites, and reproductive performance in dairy goats during the nonbreeding season.

Seasonal anestrus in Saanen dairy goats limits the continuity of year-round milk production, and the physiological and molecular mechanisms of seasonal estrus of dairy goats remain to be investigated. Eighty healthy female dairy goats aged 2.5-3.5 years were randomly divided into 2 groups during the non-breeding season (March to April): a control group (C, natural or long photoperiod) and a treatment group (T, short photoperiod combined with buck induction), comprising 40 goats each, housed 10 per pen. The experimental group additionally housed 2 bucks per pen, separated from the does by parti

Integrated Fermentation, Microbiome and Metabolomic Profiles Reveal Rumen Lipotoxicity Induced by the Masked Mycotoxin Zearalenone-14-Glucoside.

The ubiquitous presence of modified mycotoxins such as zearalenone-14-glucoside (ZEN-14G) in agricultural resources presents a critical challenge to livestock safety, specifically regarding their capacity to disrupt lipid metabolism and fermentation in the rumen. This study aimed to evaluate the dose- and time-dependent direct effects of ZEN-14G on rumen fermentation characteristics, nutrient disappearance, and mycotoxin biotransformation under controlled in vitro conditions, and to explore the associated microbial and metabolic responses. An in vitro batch fermentation system was established

Interplay between different SHP/Rgg quorum sensing systems that control production of post-translationally modified peptides in Streptococcus thermophilus.

In Bacillota, the Rap-Rgg-NprR-PlcR-PrgX-AimR (RRNPPA) superfamily of regulators mediates quorum sensing via autoinducing peptides (AIPs). AIPs are secreted, processed and reimported before interacting with their cognate regulators, modulating the latter's activity. Within RRNPPA families, short hydrophobic peptides (SHPs) interact with Rgg transcriptional regulators. A widely used bacterium in the dairy industry, Streptococcus thermophilus, possesses an unusually high number of Rgg regulators (mean of 5 and max of 10 per genome). These regulators mainly control the expression of operons invol

Caries influences the composition of oral microorganisms in male children with ASD.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder, with growing evidence suggesting that certain oral microorganisms may worsen ASD symptoms. Caries is closely linked to the nervous system and influences the composition of oral microorganisms. Therefore, when studying the oral microbial composition in ASD, the effects of caries must be excluded to accurately identify potential oral causative agents of ASD. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted with 30 children diagnosed with ASD and 34 typically developing (TD) control children, both with and without

Changes in Gut Phageome and Bacteriome Following Fecal Microbiota Transfer in Patients with Intestinal Graft-Versus-Host Disease and Crohn's Disease.

Intestinal bacterial dysbiosis develops in a number of immune-mediated disorders. Fecal microbiota transfer (FMT) is considered a potentially efficient tool for restoration of the patient's gut microbiota. The aim of our study was to trace the time course of dominant bacterial populations and some Enterobacteria phages in patients with GVHD and Crohn's disease after FMT procedure. Patients and methods: We observed 12 patients with intestinal graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and 15 persons with Crohn's disease after massive anti-infectious treatment. FMT was performed by a standard protocol us

The Gut Microbiota of Peruvian Children Under the Age of Two During the Complementary Feeding Period.

The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in early childhood development. Dysbiosis in this community has been linked to risk of disease. The transition from an exclusive milk-based diet to complementary feeding and eventual weaning is crucial for the development and maturation of the gut microbiota. However, the impact of breastfeeding duration during the complementary feeding period (typically 6 to 24 months of age) on microbial development trajectories remains incompletely characterized. Here, we investigated whether prolonged breastfeeding during the complementary feeding window influences g

Major depletion of insulin sensitivity-associated taxa in the gut microbiome of persons living with HIV controlled by antiretroviral drugs.

BACKGROUND: Persons living with HIV (PWH) harbor an altered gut microbiome (higher abundance of Prevotella and lower abundance of Bacillota and Ruminococcus lineages) compared to non-infected individuals. Some of these alterations are linked to sexual preference and others to the HIV infection. The relationship between these lineages and metabolic alterations, often present in aging PWH, has been poorly investigated. METHODS: In this study, we compared fecal metagenomes of 25 antiretroviral-treatment (ART)-controlled PWH to three independent control groups of 25 non-infected matched individua

Tapping into haloalkaliphilic bacteria for sustainable agriculture in treated wastewater: insights into genomic fitness and environmental adaptation.

The increasing salinity and alkalinity of soils pose a global challenge, particularly in arid regions such as Tunisia, where about 50% of lands are sensitive to soil salinization. Anthropogenic activities, including the use of treated wastewater (TWW) for irrigation, exacerbate these issues. Haloalkaliphilic bacteria, adapted to TWW conditions and exhibiting plant-growth promotion (PGP) and biocontrol traits, could offer solutions. In this study, 24 haloalkaliphilic bacterial strains were isolated from rhizosphere sample of olive tree irrigated with TWW for more than 20 years. The bacterial id

IgG4-related disease has a specific intestinal microbiota signature.

BACKGROUND: While the intestinal microbiome has been implicated in Immunoglobulin-4 related disease (IgG4-RD), it remains poorly characterised. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive microbiome characterisation to identify disease-specific alterations. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, cryopreserved stool samples from 28 patients with IgG4-RD were characterised by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and by multiparameter microbiota flow-cytometry to determine their taxonomic composition and phenotype at the single cell level. These data were evaluated in comparison with 24 healthy controls (HC) a
