Stress and the periodontal diseases: effects of catecholamines on the growth of periodontal bacteria in vitro.

Microorganisms possess the ability to recognize hormones within the host and utilize them to adapt to their surroundings. Noradrenaline and adrenaline, which are released during human stress responses, may act as environmental cues to alter the growth of individual organisms within subgingival biofilms. The aims of this study were to modify, for anaerobic culture, existing methodology used in determining microorganism catecholamine responses and to investigate the growth responses to noradrenaline and adrenaline of 43 microorganisms found within subgingival microbial complexes. We established

Sulfur metabolism and immune-microbial networks across oral niches in periodontal disease.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) integrate microbial metabolism with local inflammation in periodontal disease. We profiled five oral niches (saliva, tongue, subgingival, supragingival, and interdental plaque) across clinical health, gingivitis, and periodontitis by combining direct VSC measurements (subgingival and oral headspace H2S/CH3SH), functional cysteine/methionine degradation assays, 16S rRNA profiling, gingival crevicular fluid cytokines, and targeted qPCR. Subgingival H2S concentrations were significantly elevated in periodontitis after adjusting for age, sex, plaque index, and subg

Oral microbiota populations of adult dogs consuming wet or dry foods.

Oral microbiota play a prominent role in canine periodontal disease and wet foods are often blamed for poor oral health, but canine oral microbial communities have been poorly studied. We aimed to determine differences in oral health measures, breath odor, and oral microbiota populations of dogs fed wet or dry food. Twelve adult dogs fed either a commercial dry (extruded) or commercial wet (canned) food for 6 wk were studied. Breath samples were measured for sulfur compounds, teeth were scored for plaque, calculus, and gingivitis by a blinded veterinary dentist, salivary pH was measured, and s

Dental chews positively shift the oral microbiota of adult dogs.

Microbiota plays a prominent role in periodontal disease, but the canine oral microbiota and how dental chews may affect these populations have been poorly studied. We aimed to determine the differences in oral microbiota of adult dogs consuming dental chews compared with control dogs consuming only a diet. Twelve adult female beagle dogs (mean age = 5.31 ± 1.08 yr) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design consisting of 28-d periods. Treatments (n = 12/group) included: diet only (CT); diet + Bones & Chews Dental Treats (BC; Chewy, Inc., Dania Beach, FL); diet + Dr. Lyon's Grain-Free

Studies into the microbial spectrum of apical periodontitis.

This study examined the variety of obligate and facultative anaerobic bacterial species recovered from cases of acute apical periodontitis. A total of 19 root canal samples and 24 periapical granuloma samples were taken from patients suffering pain and discomfort. Bacteria were identified by applying the following techniques: culturing on various media, Gram-staining and using commercially available biochemical test strips. In addition, Prevotella intermedia and Porphyromonas endodontalis were differentiated on a molecular genetic level using species-specific oligodeoxynucleotide probes. The m

A non-endoscopic device to sample the oesophageal microbiota: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The strongest risk factor for oesophageal adenocarcinoma is reflux disease, and the rising incidence of this coincides with the eradication of Helicobacter pylori, both of which might alter the oesophageal microbiota. We aimed to profile the microbiota at different stages of Barrett's carcinogenesis and investigate the Cytosponge as a minimally invasive tool for sampling the oesophageal microbiota. METHODS: In this case-control study, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was done on 210 oesophageal samples from 86 patients representing the Barrett's oesophagus progression sequence (n

Effects of sublethal exposure to an antiseptic mouthrinse on representative plaque bacteria.

Although the mechanism responsible for the clinical antiplaque efficacy of oral antiseptics is generally considered to be primarily one of bactericidal activity, it has been suggested that oral antiseptics may have additional effects on bacteria exposed to sublethal levels. Studies reported herein, investigated the effects of sublethal levels of an essential oil-containing antiseptic mouthrinse (Listerine Antiseptic, Warner-Lambert Co., Morris Plains, NJ) on selected activities of representative plaque microorganisms using in vitro models. These studies demonstrated that sublethal exposure to

Bacterial profile of aggressive periodontitis in Morocco: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is one of the most severe forms of periodontal diseases. In Morocco, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans has been strongly associated with AgP, however limited knowledge is available about the implication of other periodontal pathogens in this entity. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the composition of the subgingival microbiota in Moroccan patients with AgP. METHODS: Subgingival plaque samples were collected from 50 aggressive, 13 localized and 37 generalized periodontitis patients. Samples from 20 chronic periodontitis (ChP)

Clinical and microbiological features of subjects with adult periodontitis who responded poorly to scaling and root planing.

In a previous report, it was shown that scaling and root planing (SRP) decreased mean pocket depth and attachment level in subjects with adult periodontitis, as well as the levels and prevalence of Bacteroides forsythus, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola. However, a subset of subjects in that study exhibited mean loss of attachment following SRP. The purpose of the present investigation was to seek clinical and microbiological differences between subjects who responded well or poorly to SRP. 57 subjects with adult periodontitis were treated by full-mouth SRP under local anaesthe
