Intrahepatic subcapsular biloma after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography treated by endoscopic biliary drainage.

Several major complications from endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), including pancreatitis, cholangitis, and hemorrhage have been discussed in detail; however, a few uncommon but severe complications have been reported. We encountered an unusual case of post-ERCP intrahepatic subcapsular biloma. An 89-year-old woman with a 25-mm mass located at the hepatic hilum, suggestive of cholangiocarcinoma, underwent ERCP which demonstrated complete stricture of the common hepatic duct. Subsequently, two plastic stents were placed from the common bile duct to the right and left intrah

Safety of heat generated by endoscope light sources in simulated transcanal endoscopic ear surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether heat generated by endoscope light sources during ear surgery is safe. METHODS: Transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) was simulated using 2.7-mm or 4-mm endoscopes coupled to xenon or LED light sources and a 3D model of human temporal bone. The endoscope tip was fixed at the center of tympanic annulus. Light sources were tested at clinical (30% for xenon and 40% for LED) and 100% settings. Temperatures were measured using thermocouples attached to the endoscope tip and three points within the middle ear cavity: promontory, horizontal portion of the facial ner

Predictors of re-bleeding after endoscopic hemostasis for delayed post-endoscopic sphincterotomy bleeding.

AIM: To predict the re-bleeding after endoscopic hemostasis for delayed post-endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) bleeding. METHODS: Over a 15-year period, data from 161 patients with delayed post-ES bleeding were retrospectively collected from a single medical center. To identify risk factors for re-bleeding after initial successful endoscopic hemostasis, parameters before, during and after the procedure of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography were analyzed. These included age, gender, blood biochemistry, co-morbidities, endoscopic diagnosis, presence of peri-ampullary diverticulum, occu

Training methods and models for colonoscopic insertion, endoscopic mucosal resection, and endoscopic submucosal dissection.

Colonoscopic examination is considered an effective examination for the detection of colorectal cancers. Additionally, early colorectal cancers can be resected using endoscopic techniques such as endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection. However, those examinations and treatments need special techniques. Various training methods are practiced to acquire such endoscopic techniques throughout the world. In clinical cases, magnetic positioning devices help endoscopic insertion by less experienced endoscopists. There is a physical model made by polyvinyl chloride and a vir

Cervical incision thoracic endoscopic surgery: a minimally invasive endoscopic approach in thoracic surgery.

Cervical incision thoracic surgery has recently been described. Currently, there is a move to increase the role of flexible endoscopy in surgery. The use of a flexible endoscope through a natural orifice into the thoracic cavity still remains ethically doubtful. The authors present a surgical experimental study using a flexible endoscope through a cervical incision for the exploration of both the mediastinum and the thoracic cavity in a cadaver. An experimental work on 10 refrigerated and non-embalmed cadavers was initiated. We used a unique device - a standard double-channel flexible video ga

Multibend endoscope facilitates endoscopic hemostasis for bleeding gastric ulcer at high lesser curvature.

Bleeding peptic ulcer located high at a lesser curvature is one of the factors that predicted the failure of endoscopic therapy. One of the reasons is the technical difficulty in targeting the bleeding point over a gastric ulcer located high at a lesser curvature. A multibend endoscope was initially developed to facilitate the performance of an endoscopic submucosal dissection over difficult positions, including lesser curvature and cardia of the stomach. In this paper, we report 3 cases of difficult hemostasis for an ulcer located at a high lesser curvature where a novel multibending endoscop

Symptomatic esophageal stricture after endoscopic variceal ligation--success of endoscopic balloon dilation.

Endoscopic variceal ligation is a preferred endoscopic method to treat esophageal variceal bleeding. Esophageal stricture complicated by endoscopic ligation is very unusual. We report a case of symptomatic esophageal stricture after variceal ligation. Endoscopic balloon dilatation was used to treat the stricture successfully. The possible mechanism of stricture formation is discussed.

Endoscopic mucosal resection using a partial transparent hood for lesions located tangentially to the endoscope.

BACKGROUND: Numerous methods have been developed to resect early-stage gastric and esophageal cancers, but it is difficult to resect lesions viewed tangentially with the endoscope. METHODS: We have designed and developed an original method of endoscopic mucosal resection using a partial transparent hood to treat difficult cases in which the lesions are located tangentially to the endoscope. The hood was attached on the right side of the endoscope and, after insertion into the stomach or the esophagus, was lightly pressed on the orad side of the lesion. Then the lesion was resected using grasp

Comparison and characterization of ulcerations induced by endoscopic ligation of esophageal varices versus endoscopic sclerotherapy.

Esophageal variceal ligation and esophageal variceal sclerotherapy are two modes of therapy commonly used in the treatment of esophageal varices. The purpose of this study was to compare the local complications of these procedures, with special emphasis on production and healing of ulcerations. Twenty-three patients entered the study. Ten patients were randomized to esophageal variceal ligation and 13 to esophageal variceal sclerotherapy. Esophageal variceal ligation produced shallow (0.6 +/- 0.07 mm) circular ulcerations with a large surface area (85.4 +/- 20.3 mm2) that resolved in 14.4 +/-

[Endonasal, endoscopic-microscopic control of the decompression of the optic nerve. An anatomic endoscopic presentation of the operation].

The indication for decompression of the optic nerve after indirect trauma is made both by the ophthalmologist and the ENT-surgeon. The ENT-surgeon usually reaches and decompresses the optic canal by a transethmoidal-transsphenoidal route. The majority of authors prefer the transfacial approach to the ethmoid including resection of the crossing plane comprising the frontal process of the maxilla, the ethmoid, the lacrimal and the frontal bone. Hitherto we have knowledge of only one author utilising an endonasal approach to decompress the optic nerve. At the university hospital of Göttingen, the
