The Effect of Topical Tacrolimus on Pedicled Flap Survival: A Histological Analysis.

PURPOSE: Our previous rodent study demonstrated significantly decreased full-thickness necrosis in pedicled dorsal skin flaps with topical tacrolimus as compared with petroleum jelly. The pathophysiology of tissue necrosis involves lymphatic congestion, followed by venous congestion and ultimately arterial insufficiency. Topical tacrolimus has been shown to increase growth of lymphatic collateral vessels and decrease lymphedema, potentially obviating one contributor to necrosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the vascular and histological differences between these 2 groups to ide

Clinical and imaging characteristics associated with foveal neovascularization in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of foveal neovascularization (FNV) and its associated clinical features in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) eyes. METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study. Participants underwent ultra-widefield photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and swept-source OCT angiography (SS-OCTA). FNV was defined as a hyperreflective lesion breaching the internal limiting membrane and displaying flow signal on OCTA, within 1-mm of foveal avascular zone. Vascular metrics were obtained from the ARI Network portal. Ischemic index (ISI) and inner choroid flow de

The global burden of scabies: a cross-sectional analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: Numerous population-based studies have documented high prevalence of scabies in overcrowded settings, particularly among children and in tropical regions. We provide an estimate of the global burden of scabies using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2015. METHODS: We identified scabies epidemiological data sources from an extensive literature search and hospital insurance data and analysed data sources with a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2·1, to yield prevalence estimates. We combined prevalence estimates with a disability weight, measuring d

Strengthening primary care with the world health organization's basic package of interventions for rehabilitation: developing a list of interventions and a clinical resource.

BACKGROUND: Access to rehabilitation, a critical component of universal health coverage (UHC) remains limited, particularly in primary care (PC) and low-resource settings. To address this gap, the WHO Rehabilitation Programme developed the Basic Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation (Basic PIR). This toolkit is designed to empower PC non-rehabilitation workers to deliver a prioritised set of easy, safe and effective rehabilitation interventions through task-sharing. This article describes the participatory process used to develop the WHO's Basic PIR, specifically its list of intervention

Analysis and optimization of plate fixation fitness in acromion fracture reduction by calculating dry scapulae and x-rays acromion curvature.

BACKGROUND: The acromion projects laterally in a curving orientation. When a fracture of the acromion occurs, despite being rare, matching the best-fit fixation plate is challenging due to few options and limited availability of fixation plate types. Alternative fixation methods can carry risk of nonunion complications. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the morphological curvature pattern of the acromion to assess the level of the fixation plates fitness and provide the suitable imaging modalities for evaluating the acromion curvature. BASIC PROCEDURES: The correlation

Intrauterine Growth Restriction Disrupts the Postnatal Critical Period of Synaptic Plasticity in the Mouse Dorsal Hippocampus in a Model of Hypertensive Disease of Pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) from hypertensive disease of pregnancy complicates up to 10% of all pregnancies. Significant hippocampal-dependent cognitive and memory impairments as well as neuropsychiatric disorders have been linked to IUGR. Because disturbance of the hippocampal critical period (CPd) of synaptic plasticity leads to impairments similar to those described in IUGR human offspring, we hypothesized that IUGR would perturb the CPd of synaptic plasticity in the mouse hippocampus in our model. METHODS: IUGR was produced by a micro-osmotic pump infusion of the

Collaborative Approach to the Creation of an Arteriovenous Fistula on a US Navy Hospital Ship.

Early creation of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) decreases morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease and is the standard of care in the United States. However, this procedure is frequently not accessible in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We present the first reported case of successful AVF creation as part of a humanitarian assistance mission. The patient was a 51-year-old male with diabetes, hypertension, and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis via a temporary dialysis catheter. Preoperative assessment and patient selection were coordinated with the host n

Management system-dependent alterations in colonic mucosal architecture of swine: An Alcian Blue histochemistry and histomorphometric analysis of goblet cell density, epithelial height, and mucin-stromal ratio.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Swine management systems can influence intestinal morphology, epithelial organization, and mucosal secretory activity through differences in environmental exposure, nutrition, hygiene, and husbandry practices. However, comparative histological evaluations of colonic mucin architecture among commercial swine production systems remain limited. This study aimed to compare goblet cell density, epithelial height, and mucin-stromal ratio in the colon of swine raised under beta-agonist-free, hygienic, and free-range management systems using Alcian Blue histochemistry and quantitat

Draft genome sequence data of Haemaphysalis longicornis Oita strain.

Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann, 1901 is one of the most well-known hard ticks because of its medical and veterinary importance. Haemaphysalis longicornis transmit a wide range of pathogens among vertebrates, affecting humans and animals in Asia and Oceania. In Japan, the tick species is a major pest of cattle because it can spread a protozoan parasite Theileria orientalis, which causes theileriosis and produces economic losses to the livestock industry (Yokoyama et al. 2012 [1]). Apart from bovine theileriosis, H. longicornis is a vector of bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia ovata, canine

Perfusion maintains functional potential in denervated mimic muscles in early persistent facial paralysis which requires early microsurgical treatment - the histoanatomic basis of the extratemporal facial nerve trunk assessing axonal load in the context of possible nerve transfers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Early persistent facial paralysis is characterized by intact muscles of facial expression through maintained perfusion but lacking nerve supply. In facial reanimation procedures aiming at restoration of facial tone and dynamics, neurotization through a donor nerve is performed. Critical for reanimating target muscles is axonal capacity of both donor and recipient nerves. In cases of complete paralysis, the proximal stump of the extratemporal facial nerve trunk may be selected as a recipient site for coaptation. To further clarify the histological basis of this facial

Diseases of livestock in the Pacific Islands region: setting priorities for food animal biosecurity.

Most Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) have developing economies and face a critical shortage of veterinarians with limited financial resources allocated to their animal disease surveillance programmes. Thus, animal health authorities have to set priorities for better focusing their scarce resources. The main objective of this study was to identify animal diseases perceived to be of importance by decision makers within selected PICTs, at the regional and national levels, to ensure better targeting of animal health resources. A second objective was to investigate whether the targ

Investigation of group A Streptococcus immune responses in an endemic setting, with a particular focus on J8.

Sustained control of group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections in settings of poverty has proven to be challenging, and an effective vaccine may be the most practical long-term strategy to reduce GAS-related disease burden. Candidate GAS vaccines based on the J8 peptide have demonstrated promising immunogenicity in mice, however, less is known about the role of J8 antibodies in the human immune response to GAS infection. We analysed the stimulation of J8 antibodies in response to infection, and the role of existing J8 antibodies in protection against subsequent infection, using data collected in

Epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis at a focus monitored by the multinational force and observers in the northeastern Sinai Desert of Egypt.

A longitudinal epidemiologic study of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) transmission was conducted between July 1989 and June 1991 in a 1,200-km2 sector of the northeastern Sinai Desert monitored by the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), an international peace keeping mission between Egypt and Israel. The occurrence of human cases, sand fly density, rodent collection, and isolations of Leishmania confirmed only one of four surveyed locations as a significant focus of CL transmission. Phlebotomus papatasi, the only anthropophilic sand fly species encountered at this focus, comprised more than

Bone Trabecular Pattern Analysis in Odontogenic Cysts Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography: A Clinical Retrospective Study.

Introduction The cysts of the maxillofacial region account for one of the most common pathologies of the head and neck region after the mucosal pathologies. Radiography provides an essential clue in early diagnosis and triaging, but it continues further as it is used to evaluate the post-treatment outcome. However, manual analysis is prone to errors. In this scenario, fractal analysis (FA) in radiographs uses mathematical methods to analyse the changes in grey scales in a given radiographic image. FA in odontogenic cysts is used to characterise their complexity, uncover hidden patterns, monito
