Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease, present a major health issue and financial burden for health care systems around the world. The impact of these diseases will further increase over the next decades due to increasing life expectancies. No cure is currently available for the treatment of these conditions; only drugs, which merely alleviate the symptoms. Oxidative stress has long been associated with neurodegeneration, whether as a cause or as part of the downstream results caused by other factors. Thus, the use of antioxida

Tinnitus is a phantom perception of sound in the absence of overt acoustic stimulation. The focus of our attention is a combined therapy of tinnitus. In this prospective study (2013-2014) we evaluated the data of normal-hearing patients with tinnitus treated with various treatment modalities. In Group 1 we evaluated the data of 84 patients/124 ears after six weeks of treatment with betahistine dihydrochloride (72 mg). In Group 2, we evaluated the data of 36 patients/ 55 ears unimproved from Group 1 who were then treated for six weeks with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy combined with gingko b

BACKGROUND: Complementary therapies are widespread but controversial. We aim to provide a comprehensive collection and a summary of systematic reviews of clinical trials in three major complementary therapies (acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy). This article is dealing with herbal medicine. Potentially relevant reviews were searched through the register of the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field, the Cochrane Library, Medline, and bibliographies of articles and books. To be included articles had to review prospective clinical trials of herbal medicines; had to describe review methods

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder characterised by patchy loss of skin colour. Some people experience itching before the appearance of a new patch. It affects people of any age or ethnicity, more than half of whom develop it before the age of 20 years. There are two main types: generalised vitiligo, the common symmetrical form, and segmental, affecting only one side of the body. Around 1% of the world's population has vitiligo, a disease causing white patches on the skin. Several treatments are available. Some can restore pigment but none can cure the disease.
OBJECTIVES: To ass

The hepatoprotective effects of polyprenols from Ginkgo biloba L. leaves were evaluated against carbon tetrachloride induced hepatic damage in Sprague-Dawley rats. The elevated levels of serum ALT, AST, ALP, ALB, TP, HA, LN, TG, and CHO were restored towards normalization significantly by GBP in a dose dependent manner. The biochemical observations were supplemented with histopathological examination of rat liver sections. Meanwhile, GBP also produced a significant and dose-dependent reversal of CCl(4)-diminished activity of the antioxidant enzymes and reduced CCl(4)-elevated level of MDA. In

Rutin (Rn) and luteolin (Lu), as important plant-derived natural compounds, hold significant value in the fields of medicine, nutrition, and food science. However, their highly similar structures often lead to challenges such as signal overlap and poor selectivity in traditional electrochemical detection methods. To address these issues, this study developed an intelligent electrochemical sensing platform that integrates nanocomposites and machine learning. A ternary heterojunction structure of biochar (CB)/ZIF-8/MnIn2S4 was employed to synergistically enhance electron transfer and catalytic e

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy with limited therapeutic options. Drug repurposing offers a pragmatic strategy to identify novel candidates, including those from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Here, a gene signature-guided repurposing approach was applied to transcriptomic data using Limma and weighted gene coexpression network analysis to define MM-associated hub genes, followed by diagnostic and prognostic evaluation. Coremine Medical screening identified Camellia sinensis root (CSR) and Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBL) as promising candidates. CSR and GBL extracts inhibit

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insult is an important cause of brain injury in neonates. The development of novel treatment strategies for neonates with HI brain injury is urgently needed. Ginkgolide B (GB) is a main component of Ginkgo biloba extracts with a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. However, it is unknown whether GB could play a protective role in hypoxic stress in immature animals.
METHODS: Using neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury model of rat pups, neurological score, infarct size, and brain edema were evaluated after HI injury. The activ

Liver cancer is one of the most devastating types of cancer worldwide. Despite years of improvements in treatment, the prognosis of patients with this type of malignancy remains poor due to frequent recurrence and metastasis after surgical resection. Ginkgolic acid (GA) is a botanical drug extracted from the seed coat of Ginkgo biloba L. that possesses a wide range of bioactive properties. However, to the best of our knowledge, whether GA can inhibit the invasion of liver cancer cells and the underlying mechanisms remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of

BACKGROUND: Current treatments for vitiligo, a common pigmentary disorder affecting around 1% of the world's population, are largely unsatisfactory.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to report a Cochrane review of all interventions for the treatment of vitiligo.
METHODS: We systematically searched a range of databases for randomized controlled trials. At least two reviewers independently assessed study eligibility, methodological quality, and extracted data.
RESULTS: Nineteen trials were included. We found moderate evidence of the benefit of topical steroids. Our search uncovered limited to moderate evi

BACKGROUND: The severe late stage Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (T.b.r) is characterized by damage to the blood brain barrier, severe brain inflammation, oxidative stress and organ damage. Melarsoprol (MelB) is currently the only treatment available for this disease. MelB use is limited by its lethal neurotoxicity due to post-treatment reactive encephalopathy. This study sought to assess the potential of Ginkgo biloba (GB), a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, to protect the integrity of the blood brain barrier and ameliorate detrimental in

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a complex and multifactorial condition. An increased incidence of FSD is especially associated with the decline of estrogen. Thus, menopause is a critical phase for FSD complaints. In this context, medicinal plants may be a therapeutic option.
AIM: To identify and describe the popular and clinical uses of medicinal plants for FSD treatment in climacteric women. We highlighted the majority of the plants commonly involved with the female reproductive system including: Angelica sinensis, Cimicifuga racemosa, Ferula hermonis, Ginkgo biloba, Humulus

An escalating "epidemic" of diseases like Alzheimer's has not yet been met by effective symptomatic treatments or preventative strategies. Among a few current prescription drugs are cholinesterase inhibitors including galantamine, originating from the snowdrop. Research into ethnobotanicals for memory or cognition has burgeoned in recent years. Based on a multi-faceted review of medicinal plants or phytochemicals, including traditional uses, relevant bioactivities, psychological and clinical evidence on efficacy and safety, this overview focuses on those for which there is promising clinical t

OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of ginkgolic acids on human tumor cells and normal cells.
METHODS: Ginkgolic acids (total concentration 90%) was prepared from ginkgo sarcotestas. The inhibitive effect of ginkgolic acids on human tumor cells and normal cells lines was examined by MTT assay.
RESULTS: When the concentration was 5.0 micrograms/ml, ginkgolic acids obviously inhibited the growth of tumor cells and didn't influence the normal cells. Inhibitive rate of ginkgolic acids on LTEP-a-2 was 59.1%. High-concentration ginkgolic acids had inhibitive effect on the growth of tumor cells and n

Diabetic glaucoma, a severe microvascular and neurodegenerative complication of diabetes, involves complex pathological mechanisms including chronic hyperglycemia‑induced oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, microcirculatory disturbances, and retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptosis. While conventional Western medicine has achieved significant success in intraocular pressure (IOP) control, it faces challenges in providing long‑term neuroprotection and delaying disease progression. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), guided by its holistic concept and treatment based on syndrome differentiati

Background: Gallic acid (GA) is a dietary polyphenol widely found in walnuts, tea leaves, and grapes, and it is recognized for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) is known to disrupt redox balance, promote neuroinflammation, and impair cognition, while effective nutritional strategies to mitigate these effects remain scarce. This study was designed to evaluate the protective potential of GA against CSD-induced cognitive deficits in mice and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Seventy-two male ICR mice were randomly allocated to

BACKGROUND: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a serious and disabling movement disorder; it impairs social function and quality of life and increases the mortality rate. TD is usually induced by the use of antipsychotic drugs; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Pharmacotherapy of TD includes cholinergic drugs, benzodiazepines, ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), antioxidants, amantadine, propanolol, botulinum toxin, valbenazine, and deutetrabenazine, whereas the non-pharmacotherapy approach includes modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) and deep brain stimulation. We successfully treated

Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease in which pro-apoptotic signals are directed to retinal ganglion cells. During this disease the conventional outflow pathway becomes malfunctioning. Aqueous humour builds up in the anterior chamber, leading to increased intraocular pressure. Both of these events are related to functional impairment. The knowledge of molecular mechanisms allows us to better understand the usefulness of substances that can support anti-glaucoma therapy. The goal of glaucoma therapy is not simply to lower intraocular pressure; it should also be to facilitate the survival of ret
