A simple method for detection of food foraging behavior in the rat: involvement of NMDA and dopamine receptors in the behavior.

Food foraging behavior involves food removing, hoarding, and competitive preying upon other animals. It is also associated with high cognitive functions such as investing effort into decision making, but no established laboratory model is available to detect the behaviors. In the present study, we have developed a novel laboratory rodent model to detect competitive, non-competitive, and no-hurdle foraging conditions that can mimic the corresponding environment in nature. We found that normal rats consistently foraged the food from a food container to the field and spread food into piles in the

An Evaluation of Metacognitive Functions in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: In metacognitive theory, thought fusion beliefs, beliefs about rituals, and beliefs about stop signals predict obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The number of controlled studies using specific scales to assess these three belief domains in different cultures is limited. METHODS: The comparison sample consisted of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (n: 106) and control (n: 200) group. Participants filled out the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised form, Penn State Worry Scale, Obsessive Beliefs Scale-44, Thought Fusion Inventory, Beliefs about Rituals Inventory and Stop

Towards a definitive symptom structure of obsessive-compulsive disorder: a factor and network analysis of 87 distinct symptoms in 1366 individuals.

BACKGROUND: The symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are highly heterogeneous and it is unclear what is the optimal way to conceptualize this heterogeneity. This study aimed to establish a comprehensive symptom structure model of OCD across the lifespan using factor and network analytic techniques. METHODS: A large multinational cohort of well-characterized children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with OCD (N = 1366) participated in the study. All completed the Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, which contains an expanded checklist of 87 distinct OCD symptoms. Ex

Comparative efficacy of risperidone versus haloperidol on behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) cannot be regarded as a single clinical syndrome, but rather as a heterogeneous group of symptoms, each of which can be considered as possible targets for therapy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of risperidone and haloperidol on specific manifestations of BPSD. METHODS: A post-hoc analysis was conducted using data from an 18-week, randomized, double-blind, crossover head-to-head trial of risperidone vs haloperidol in treating 114 nursing-home residents with BPSD. Dependent variables were item scores of the Korean versi

From incident response to system design: Japan's 2025 PMD Act drug-shortage reform.

BACKGROUND: Drug shortages have become a systems problem in Japan; as of January 2025, about one in five prescription drugs were facing limited shipments or supply disruptions. Policymakers concluded that voluntary notices and ad hoc coordination were insufficient in a fragmented, low-margin generics market. REFORM CONTENT: A May 2025 partial amendment to the Act on Securing Quality, Efficacy and Safety of Products Including Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices (PMD Act) codifies three pillars. Geographies of the secret: Navigating medical, activist, and intimate spaces in intersex research in Chile.

This article examines how medical secrecy, family silence, and nascent activism produce distinct spatial-cultural regimes that shape health outcomes, care pathways, and health inequities for intersex people in Chile. It contributes a spatial-analytic framework to medical anthropology debates on clinical secrecy, contested diagnostic nomenclature, and epistemic injustice in healthcare. Multi-sited reflexive ethnography was conducted in Chile between October 2020 and December 2023, primarily in Santiago. The study draws on 30 semi-structured interviews-14 with intersex individuals (aged 19-45),

Chronic 17β-estradiol treatment improves negative valence, anhedonic profile, and social interactions in ovariectomized, middle-aged female rats.

Women experience depression at nearly 2-fold higher rates than men, with middle-age during the menopausal transition being particularly vulnerable. Preclinical studies commonly focus on young adult or aged subjects and/or rely upon a few behavioral tasks. Given the highly variable and heterogenous nature of depression, the current study implemented a behavioral battery to assess whether estradiol (E2, endogenously expressed in women and rats) would improve depressive measures using the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) for negative valence, anhedonia, sociability, and anxiety in early middle-age

Characteristics of Older People from a Poor Residential Environment in Okinawa, Japan: An Emergency Department-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for what diseases occur more commonly in older people from a poor residential environment (PRE) is limited. OBJECTIVE: We investigated characteristics, especially the underlying reason (disease) for visiting an emergency department (ED), of older people from a PRE in ED settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on people aged ≥65 years who presented to the EDs of 2 hospitals in Okinawa, Japan, between 2015 and 2019. PRE cases were identified by searching relevant words, such as a house overflowing with garbage from hoarding or housing squalor (gomi-yashiki

Perfectionism and Difficulty Controlling Thoughts Bridge Eating Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Symptoms: A Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are highly comorbid, but little is known about how this comorbidity is maintained. Prior research suggests that obsessive thoughts and perfectionism may be shared maintenance factors for EDs and OCD. METHODS: The current study used network analysis to (1) identify bridge pathways in an ED-OCD comorbidity network and (2) test if perfectionism symptoms bridge between ED-OCD symptoms in a combined network model including ED, OCD, and Perfectionism symptoms. Participants (N = 1,619) were a mixed sample of undergraduate stud

Strategies to engage older adults with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in exercise: A multiple case study.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affects 5.2 million Americans in 2016 and this number will increase to 14.7 million by 2050. Unfortunately, AD cannot yet be prevented, slowed, or cured. Aerobic exercise is potentially therapeutic for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as it favorably affects brain structure and function. A critical determinant in testing its effectiveness is optimal adherence to the exercise prescription. AD symptoms, particularly behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), however, make exercise delivery and adherence challenging. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the stra

Psychiatric disorders in children with Prader-Willi syndrome-Results of a 2-year longitudinal study.

Psychiatric disorders such as psychosis are highly prevalent in adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). However, knowledge about the presence and progression of psychiatric disorders in children with PWS is very limited. Sixty-one children with PWS aged 7-17 years were tested using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC) and Compulsive Behaviour Checklist (CBC), and 38/61 were retested after 2 years. Prevalence of psychiatric disorders and the association with age, gender, genetic subtype, and total IQ were assessed. In addition, occurrence and characteristics of compulsions wer

OCD Compulsions as Aberrant Integration of Uncertainty from Local Goals to Global Goals.

Recent years have seen unprecedented increases in compulsive behaviors, even in previously undiagnosed populations. Yet, despite their rising prevalence and the fact that compulsions-notably associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but also a key feature of other disorders such a hoarding or body dysmorphic disorder-significantly hamper daily function, the specific mechanisms of their formation remain unknown. Previous research holds mixed findings on compulsivity-linked cognitive deficits, and, while many accounts assume that compulsions aim to reduce anxiety, most individuals wit

Use of long-acting injectable buprenorphine in the correctional setting.

BACKGROUND: As overdoses due to opioids rise, medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) continue to be underemployed, resulting in limited access to potentially life-saving treatment. Substance use disorders are prevalent in individuals who are incarcerated, and these individuals are at increased risk for death postrelease due to overdose. Few jails and prisons offer MOUD and most limit access. Extended-release buprenorphine (XR-BUP), a novel monthly injectable MOUD formulation, could be uniquely poised to address treatment access in correctional settings. METHODS: This study linked a retros

Cognitive Inflexibility in OCD and Related Disorders.

Cognitive inflexibility is suggested by the hallmark symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), namely the occurrence of repetitive thoughts and/or behaviours that persist despite being functionally impairing and egodystonic to the individual. As well as being implied by the top-level symptoms, cognitive inflexibility in OCD, and some related conditions, has also been objectively quantified in case-control studies using computerised cognitive tasks. This chapter begins by considering the objective measurement of different aspects of cognitive flexibility using neuropsychological paradigm

Neurofeedback interventions for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders: Current evidence and future directions.

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) are characterized by obsessions, compulsive or repetitive behaviors, hoarding and saving, or recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors. Although pharmacological, cognitive-behavioral, or behavioral therapies provide relief for many for these conditions, a substantial proportion respond insufficiently or experience relapses. Neurofeedback (NF) enables individuals to self-modulate neural activity in real time and has been explored as a non-invasive neuromodulation strategy in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the only OCRD in which NF has b

Symptom Dimensions of Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Exploratory Examination of Associations with Clinical Features and Response to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

Several overarching symptom dimensions have been identified within pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including doubting, obsessing, washing, ordering, neutralizing, and hoarding. These unique symptom presentations may have important clinical implications, especially in terms of potentially distinct associations with age, functional impairment, insight, family accommodation, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Such symptom dimensions may also differ in their responsiveness to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Existing literature on the features associated with and the clinica

Clinical features of obsessive-compulsive disorder among individuals who experience health-related obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: While some obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) phenotypes are well-established and better understood, it is unclear whether the presence of health-related obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) is associated with specific clinical characteristics. We aimed to investigate whether OCS involving concerns with illness, diseases, body parts or aspects of appearance (i.e. health-related OCS) are associated with differences in demographics, experience of stressful life events, clinical severity, clinical course, endorsement of established OCD dimensions, and psychiatric comorbidities. Programmatic and Organizational Barriers and Facilitators to Addressing High-Risk Issues in Supportive Housing and Housing First Programs.

Risk management is an important component of service delivery in supportive housing and Housing First programs. However, there is no evidence on the implementation of risk management approaches in these settings. This qualitative study examined what service providers working in supportive housing and Housing First programs in Canada identify as the programmatic and organizational factors that affect the prevention and management of high-risk behaviours and challenges (e.g., overdose, suicide attempts, non-suicidal self-injury, falls and fall-related injuries, fire-setting, hoarding, apartment
