Thalidomide is an effective drug for the treatment of erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL). ENL is an inflammatory reaction that may occur in multibacillary leprosy patients. Its cause(s) as well as the mechanism of thalidomide in arresting this condition are not fully understood. The preoperative, operative and postoperative ocular complications in 48 eyes of 39 leprosy patients who underwent standard extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation, by the same surgeon, were studied retrospectively. UNLABELLED: Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a chronic recurrent systemic complication of multi-bacillary leprosy frequently associated with the development of neuritis, iritis, orchitis, arthritis and dactylitis. We have examined the remains of a Pilgrim burial from St Mary Magdalen, Winchester. The individual was a young adult male, aged around 18-25 years at the time of death.
