Nontraumatic death in joggers. A series of 30 patients at autopsy.

Since few autopsy data are available on the cause of death in joggers, 30 joggers who underwent autopsy were studied. All were males 18 to 57 years of age (mean 36 years). Information on jogging habits was available in 18 patients who ran 7 to 105 miles per week (mean 33) for one to 28 years (mean 20). Three of the 30 patients were "marathon runners." In 12 patients, the only available information was that they had been jogging for at least six months, but information regarding the distance run was not available. Sixteen patients (53 percent) had clinical histories of systemic hypertension, hy

Is Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) a superior screening tool for heat stress risk than Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index? Eight years of data from the Gothenburg half marathon.

BACKGROUND: The Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index is a common tool to screen for heat stress for sporting events. However, the index has a number of limitations. Rational indices, such as the physiological equivalent temperature (PET) and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), are potential alternatives. AIM: To identify the thermal index that best predicts ambulance-required assistances and collapses during a city half marathon. METHODS: Eight years (2010-2017) of meteorological and ambulance transport data, including medical records, from Gothenburg's half-marathon were used to anal

Vascular Function Is Differentially Altered by Distance after Prolonged Running.

PURPOSE: Ultraendurance exercise is steadily growing in popularity; however, the effect of increasingly prolonged durations of exercise on the vascular endothelium is unknown. The aim of this study was to characterize the effect of various ultramarathon running distances on vascular form and function. METHODS: We evaluated vascular endothelial function via flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in the superficial femoral artery, as well as microvascular function, inflammatory factors, and central artery stiffness, before and after participants completed 25-km (7M:2F), 50-km (11M:10F), 80-km (9M:4F), or

Low Vitamin D Levels Do Not Predict Hyperglycemia in Elderly Endurance Athletes (but in Controls).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recent studies revealed a link between hypovitaminosis D3 and the risk for hyperglycemia. Further mechanistic and interventional investigations suggested a common reason for both conditions rather than a causal relationship. Exposure to sunlight is the most relevant source of vitamin D3 (25(OH)D), whereas adipose tissue is able to store relevant amounts of the lipophilic vitamin. Since running/bicycling leads to increased out-door time and alters physiological response mechanisms, it can be hypothesized that the correlation between hypovitaminosis D3 and hyperglycemia might

Creatine kinase monitoring in sport medicine.

UNLABELLED: AREAS OF GENERAL AGREEMENT: Total creatine kinase (CK) levels depend on age, gender, race, muscle mass, physical activity and climatic condition. High levels of serum CK in apparently healthy subjects may be correlated with physical training status, as they depend on sarcomeric damage: strenuous exercise that damages skeletal muscle cells results in increased total serum CK. The highest post-exercise serum enzyme activities are found after prolonged exercise such as ultradistance marathon running or weight-bearing exercises and downhill running, which include eccentric muscular con

Research on the impact of sports event image on tourism loyalty in heritage sites: An empirical study based on the Yongding Tulou marathon.

Heritage tourism related to sports events is widely recognized as a new paradigm of integration between culture, sports, and tourism. By combining sports events with world heritage sites, it attracts more tourists to pay attention to world heritage, serving as an important practice for the protection and sustainable development of world cultural heritage. However, the academic community still lacks discussions on its composition and impact effects. This study, based on the event of the 2022 Yongding Tulou Marathon in Fujian, constructs a multiple impact model of sports event events on tourist

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome: A Scoping Review of Epidemiology, Biomechanics, and Risk Factors.

Regular physical activity confers numerous health and social benefits; however, activity-related lower-limb overuse injuries are prevalent. Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) is a common overuse injury of the lower extremity. It is frequently observed in athletes and in military personnel. It involves exercise-induced pain over the anterior tibia and is an early stress injury in the continuum of tibial stress fractures (TSF). This scoping review aims to synthesize and characterize the literature on MTSS, identify knowledge gaps, and propose future research directions. We conducted a scoping

Possible Mechanisms for Adverse Cardiac Events Caused by Exercise-Induced Hypertension in Long-Distance Middle-Aged Runners: A Review.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is rare among athletes. However, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of SCD among those <35 years of age. Meanwhile, coronary artery disease (CAD) is the primary SCD cause among those ≥35 years of age. CAD-induced plaque ruptures are believed to be a significant cause of cardiovascular diseases in middle-aged individuals who participate in extreme long-distance running activities such as marathons. A total of 1970 articles related to EIH were identified using search terms. Out of these, 1946 studies were excluded for reasons such as arterial hypertension

Advanced adenomas among young endurance runners: A prospective hypothesis-generating prevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Extreme long-distance running can produce recurrent gastrointestinal stress, including splanchnic hypoperfusion, mucosal injury, and post-exercise rectal bleeding, but its relationship to colorectal neoplasia is unclear. We therefore prospectively estimated the prevalence of advanced adenomas in endurance runners aged 35-50 years. This prevalence estimate is hypothesis-generating. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center, single-arm prevalence (cross-sectional) study (NCT05419531), participants had completed at least 2 ultramarathons (50 km or longer) or at least 5 marathons an

[Differential diagnosis and treatment of hyponatremia].

Hyponatremia is one of the most common metabolic disorders in clinical medicine. The value of Na+ in serum equalling 135 mmol/ l and lower is regarded as hyponatremia. Its clinical manifestations are the following: headaches, nausea, vomiting, seizures, numbness, coma and death. Hyponatremia caused by nonosmotic hypersecretion of vasopressin can be divided into: a) hypovolemic, b) normovolemic and c) hypervolemic. Hyponatremia which is not caused by the hypersecretion of vasopressin is the so  called pseudohyponatremia, water intoxication, cerebral salt loss syndrome. Hypovolemic hyponatremia

Physiological Changes, Activity, and Stress During a 100-km-24-h Walking-March.

BACKGROUND: Long-endurance exercises like ultramarathons are known to elicit various metabolic and physiological changes in the human body. However, little is known about very long-duration exercise at low intensities regarding healthy human subjects. AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in body composition and metabolism in long-endurance but low-intensity events. METHODS: Twenty-five male and 18 female healthy recreational athletes (age 34.6 ± 8.8 years; BMI: 22.4 ± 2.0 kg/m2) of the "100 km Mammutmarsch" were recruited for participation during the events in 2014-2016. Intra-apheresis Cycling to Improve the Clinical Efficacy of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donations.

Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation is the primary procedure used to collect haemopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for transplantation in individuals with haematological malignancies. More than 90,000 HSC transplants take place globally each year, and there is an increasing need to guarantee HSC mobilisation, improve tolerability to apheresis, and optimise immune reconstitution. Currently, mobilisation of HSCs depends upon pharmacological agents, with donors inactive during their subsequent apheresis. A successful yield of HSCs is not always achieved, and greater efficiency of collection proce

Effects of exercise training on circulating levels of Dickkpof-1 and secreted frizzled-related protein-1 in breast cancer survivors: A pilot single-blind randomized controlled trial.

BackgroundWingless and integration site growth factor (Wnt) signaling is a tumorigenesis-related signaling pathway. Dickkpof-1 (DKK1) and secreted frizzled-related protein-1 (SFRP1) are endogenous negative regulators of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Accumulating evidence indicates that higher serum levels of DKK1 are correlated with poor prognosis of various types of cancer. Here, we investigated whether exercise training causes changes in the serum levels of DKK1 and SFRP1 in patients with breast cancer.MethodsTwenty-four breast cancer survivors, after chemo- or radiotherapy, participated in this
