A comparative study of coagulation, granular- and powdered-activated carbon for the removal of perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate in drinking water treatment.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are persistent organic pollutants in the environment and their occurrence causes toxicological effects on humans. We examined different conventional coagulant treatments such as alum, ferric chloride and polyaluminium chloride in removing these compounds. These were then compared with a natural coagulant (Moringa oleifera). We also investigated the powdered-activated carbon (PAC) and granular-activated carbon (GAC) for removing these compounds. At an initial dose of 5 mg/L, polyaluminium chloride led to a higher reduction of PFOS/P

Broad-spectrum antiviral effect of MoringaA-loaded exosomes against IAV by mediating the GCN5-TFEB-autolysosome pathway.

Influenza virus-induced viral pneumonia is a major threat to human health, and specific therapeutic agents for viral pneumonia are still lacking. MoringaA (MA) is an anti-influenza virus active compound isolated from Moringa seeds, which can inhibit influenza virus by activating the TFEB-autophagic lysosomal pathway in host cells. In this study, we obtained exosomes from M2-type macrophages and encapsulated and delivered MA (MA-Exos), and we investigated the efficacy of MA-Exos in antiviral and viral pneumonia in vivo and in vitro, respectively. In addition, we provided insights into the mecha

Anti-hepatitis B virus activity of food nutrients and potential mechanisms of action.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is endemic in many parts of the world and is a significant cause of chronic liver damage and hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV therapeutics vary according to the disease stage. The best therapeutic option for patients with end-stage liver disease is liver transplantation, while for chronic patients, HBV infection is commonly managed using antivirals (nucleos(t)ides analogs or interferons). However, due to the accessibility issues and the high cost of antivirals, most HBV patients do not have access to treatment. These complications have led researchers to reconsider treatme

Behavioral responses of pigs to dietary alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters: a systematic review.

Intensive swine production stressors induce stress responses that compromise welfare and health, positioning behavior as a critical welfare indicator. Although antibiotics traditionally improve performance, antimicrobial resistance concerns have driven the search for alternatives. This systematic review evaluated the influence of zootechnical additives, used as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP), on pig behavior. Following the PICO framework (pigs, antimicrobial alternatives, AGP, behavioral responses), three databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science) were searched. Out of 1,893
