Increased sensitivity of routine laboratory detection of Strongyloides stercoralis and hookworm by agar-plate culture.

The efficacy of agar-plate culture has been evaluated for the detection of Strongyloides stercoralis and hookworm, compared with direct smear, the formalin-ether sedimentation technique and the filter-paper method. Of 1085 stool samples from the routine laboratory service at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, 241 samples harboured S. stercoralis, 153 hookworm and 2 Rhabditis hominis. The recovery rate of S. stercoralis by agar-plate culture is significantly superior to the other methods (P < 0.005). The ratios of positive results from the methods used to the total number of S. st

In vitro in-depth characterization of emodepside in combination with key anthelmintic drugs on soil-transmitted helminths.

Despite the enormous disease burden, treatments are limited for soil-transmitted helminthiasis. The handful of anthelmintic drugs suffer from variable and often insufficient efficacy against the pathogens. Resistance development, caused by high drug pressure, is an ongoing concern. New treatments are needed, and combination therapies may represent a promising therapeutic strategy. We explored emodepside as a partner in combination therapy and characterized drug-interaction effects with key anthelmintics in vitro against different soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). Drug-interaction studies were

Serological Evidence of Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections as a Potential Risk for Severity in Leprosy Patients.

Leprosy presents a broad clinical spectrum influenced by the host's immune response, and co-infections may further modulate disease progression. This study evaluated clinically diagnosed leprosy patients (n = 251) from Sergipe and Minas Gerais, Brazil, along with healthy controls (n = 43), soil-transmitted helminths-positive controls (n = 15), and household contacts (n = 176). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were performed using predicted B-cell epitopes from immunogenic proteins of Ascaris sp., Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides stercoralis, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. Parasitic Contamination of Soil in the Southern United States.

Parasites are generally associated with lower income countries in tropical and subtropical areas. Still, they are also prevalent in low-income communities in the southern United States. Studies characterizing the epidemiology of parasites in the United States are limited, resulting in little comprehensive understanding of the problem. This study investigated the environmental contamination of parasites in the southern United States by determining each parasite's contamination rate and burden in five low-income communities. A total of 499 soil samples of approximately 50 g were collected from p

Household socio-economic position and individual infectious disease risk in rural Kenya.

The importance of household socio-economic position (SEP) in shaping individual infectious disease risk is increasingly recognised, particularly in low income settings. However, few studies have measured the extent to which this association is consistent for the range of pathogens that are typically endemic among the rural poor in the tropics. This cross-sectional study assessed the relationship between SEP and human infection within a single community in western Kenya using a set of pathogens with diverse transmission routes. The relationships between household SEP and individual infection wi

Human hookworm infection: Is effective control possible? A review of hookworm control efforts and future directions.

Human hookworm, a soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection caused by either Necator americanus or Anclystoma duodenale, is a major cause of morbidity globally and predominantly affects the world's poorest populations. Transmitted primarily by larval invasion of exposed skin, the adults inhabit the host small intestine, where they consume host blood. The resultant chronic iron deficiency anemia can lead to stunted growth and cognitive deficits in children, reduced work capacity in adults, and a variety of pregnancy complications. Historically, successful STH elimination has only been achieved

A highly expressed intestinal cysteine protease of Ancylostoma ceylanicum protects vaccinated hamsters from hookworm infection.

BACKGROUND: Human hookworms (Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Ancylostoma ceylanicum) are intestinal blood-feeding parasites that infect ~500 million people worldwide and are among the leading causes of iron-deficiency anemia in the developing world. Drugs are useful against hookworm infections, but hookworms rapidly reinfect people, and the parasites can develop drug resistance. Therefore, having a hookworm vaccine would be of tremendous benefit. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We investigated the vaccine efficacy in outbred Syrian hamsters of three A. ceylanicum hookworm antig

Investigating the Effectiveness of Current and Modified World Health Organization Guidelines for the Control of Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections.

BACKGROUND: Considerable efforts have been made to better understand the effectiveness of large-scale preventive chemotherapy therapy for the control of morbidity caused by infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs): Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and the 2 hookworm species, Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale. Current World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for STH control include mass drug administration (MDA) programs based on prevalence measurements, aiming at reducing morbidity in pre-school-aged children (pre-SAC) and school-aged children (SAC) by lowering t

CONTEXT: Dichapetalum filicaule Breteler (Dichapetalaceae) is a rare species occurring only in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Although research on several species of the genus has produced interesting bioactive compounds, particularly the Dichapetalins, a novel class of triterpenoids with antineoplastic properties, there is virtually no information on the ethnobotanical uses and chemical constituents of D. filicaule. OBJECTIVE: The phytochemical and anthelminthic activities of the constituents of D. filicaule were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chemical constituents of the petroleum ether, c

Malaria and helminthic co-infection among HIV-positive pregnant women: prevalence and effects of antiretroviral therapy.

The impact of malaria on anemia and the interplay with helminths underline the importance of addressing the interactions between HIV/AIDS, malaria and intestinal helminth infections in pregnancy. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria-helminth dual infections among HIV positive pregnant mothers after 12 months of ART. A cross sectional study was conducted on intestinal helminths and malaria dual infections among HIV-positive pregnant women attending antenatal health centers in Rwanda. Stool and malaria blood slide examinations were performed on 328 women residing in r

Contrasting patterns in the small-scale heterogeneity of human helminth infections in urban and rural environments in Brazil.

Marked heterogeneity exists in the patterns of parasitic infection between individuals, households and communities. Analysis of parasite distributions within populations is complicated by the fact that parasite distributions are highly aggregated and few studies have explicitly incorporated this distribution when investigating small-scale spatial heterogeneities. This study aimed to quantify the small-scale (within- and between-household) heterogeneity of helminth infection in an area of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, with rural and urban sectors. Parasitological data from a cross-sectional surve

[Transmission of schistosomiasis in an urban population and prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis in Bamako, Mali ].

Parasitological, malacological and anthropological studies were performed to assess the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni in schoolchildren living in the suburban area of Bamako. A total of 1017 schoolchildren aged 6-14 years were selected in two different areas between September 1997 and December 1999. In Djikoroni, the prevalence of S. haematobium and S. mansoni was 80.7% (339/420) and 22.8% (85/372) respectively. There was no significant difference of prevalence and intensity of infection with S. haematobium between schools, gender and age (p > 0.05), whereas, those of S.

Endoscopic Detection and Molecular Confirmation of Ancylostoma ceylanicum with Atypical Gastrointestinal Manifestations: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm is a widely known soil-transmitted helminth (STH) traditionally linked to iron-deficiency anemia caused by chronic blood loss in the small intestine. The classical human pathogens are Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. However, emerging evidence indicates that Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a hookworm of cats and dogs, is a significant cause of human infection, particularly in Southeast Asia and other tropical regions. Its detection in human populations signals an evolving epidemiological landscape, challenging the previous notion that zoonotic hookworms have a negligi

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Soil-Transmitted Helminthic Infections in the Pediatric Population in India: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) is a major healthcare challenge in the pediatric age group affecting poor and deprived parts of our community. The main species that infect people are roundworm (AL, Ascaris lumbricoides ), whipworm (TT, Trichuris trichiura ), and hookworms (HW, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus ). We aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of STH infections in India in the pediatric age group (< 18 years) and assess the risk factors associated with STH in this age group. Three databases were searched (PubMed, Scopus, and Embase) up to February 16, 2021 with delibera

Hookworm infection in infants: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm infections (Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale) are common in rural areas of tropical and subtropical countries. Human acquisition results from direct percutaneous invasion of infective larvae from contaminated soil. Overall, almost 472 million people in developing rural countries are infected. According to simulation models, hookworm disease has a global financial impact of over US$100 billion a year. Hookworm infection in newborn or infancy is rare, and most of the cases reported in literature are from endemic countries. Here, we describe the case of an infant wit
