Analysis of the golden proportion and width/height ratios of maxillary anterior dentition in patients with lateral incisor agenesis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the presence of the golden proportion (GP) in the facial view tooth-to-tooth width proportion of the six maxillary anterior teeth and to evaluate the width/height (W/H) ratios of the incisors of patients with maxillary lateral incisor (LI) agenesis treated either with implants or orthodontically (by moving canines into the position of the laterals, recontouring them, and placing composite restorations over the repositioned teeth). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients with LI agenesis were divided into four experimental groups: unilater

Mixed dentition analysis for Asian-Americans.

One of the important aspects of diagnosis in the mixed dentition is the determination of the tooth size-arch length relationship. Such a determination is often made before eruption of the permanent canines and first and second premolars. The most commonly used prediction method of Tanaka and Johnston is based on data from a sample of children of Northern European descent. The accuracy of this method when applied to a different ethnic population is questionable. In this study, 201 dental plaster casts of Asia-Pacific-American subjects, all of whom were under the age of 21 years, were used. The

Cephalometric norms of a Burkina Faso population.

INTRODUCTION: After a clinical examination, in order to implement an appropriate treatment planning, additional examinations such as lateral cephalograms, were performed. They were submitted to a cephalometric analysis such as the Tweed-Merrifield analysis. These cephalometric analyses based on a synthesis of aesthetic criteria established for a Caucasian European-American white people population could not serve as the reference for an African population. The aim of our study was to help establish the cephalometric norms of the Tweed-Merrifield's craniofacial and aesthetic analysis for a consu

Orthodontic tooth movement: bone formation and its stability over time.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic tooth movement can lead to the creation of bone. The purposes of the study were to investigate the amount of bone formed in orthodontic patients during treatment (maxillary canine distalization) and retention and to assess the long-term stability of the new bone. METHODS: The sample consisted of 80 patients with 128 missing lateral incisors who were treated with distalization of the maxillary canines. They were examined at the beginning of orthodontic treatment (T1), at the end of treatment (T2), 2 years after treatment (T3A), and 5 years after treatment (T3B). The i

Adequacy of mandibular premolar position despite early loss of its deciduous molar.

The mandibular second premolar (MnP2) tooth is one of the most commonly impacted teeth. Early loss of its deciduous predecessor has long been suggested to be a factor in the etiology of the MnP2 impaction. In this study, panoramic roentgenograms were used to measure the angular position of the unerupted MnP2 in 85 children. The study was carried out to test whether early loss of the lower second primary molar (dM2) correlates with MnP2 malpositions that are measurably greater than those from a control sample. The results show a small and statistically insignificant difference between the mean

Morphometric analysis of the primary and permanent dentitions in hemifacial microsomia: a controlled study.

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM), a developmental abnormality involving the first and second branchial arches, is one of the most common craniofacial abnormalities. Although the general presentations of hemifacial microsomia--such as unilateral microtia, macrostomia, and hypoplasia of the mandibular ramus and condyle--are wellknown, the effects on the teeth are not well-documented. This study examined the primary and permanent tooth dimensions of dental casts of 50 hemifacial microsomia patients compared with those of 50 normal control patients matched for sex and dental status. The results showed

Relationship between clinical periodontal biotype and labial plate thickness: an in vivo study.

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in labial plate thickness in patients identified as having thin versus thick/average periodontal biotypes. The association between biotype and labial plate thickness was evaluated by correlating information obtained from cone beam computed tomographs, diagnostic impressions, and clinical examinations of the maxillary anterior teeth (canine to canine) in 60 patients. Compared to a thick/average biotype, a thin biotype was associated with thinner labial plate thickness (P < .001), narrower keratinized tissue width (P < .001), greater

Prevalence and distribution of developmental enamel defects in primary dentition of Chinese children 3-5 years old.

A total of 1344 children, 3-5 yr old, from two rural counties, Haidian and Miyun, close to Beijing, China, were examined in 1992. A modified DDE Index was employed in this study, and a pre-designed formula was used to calculate an enamel defect score (EDS) for each individual in the study. Oral examination was performed by one dentist under natural light using a standard mouth mirror and dental probe. Developmental enamel lesions were diagnosed without drying or cleaning the teeth prior to examination. Results from this study showed that primary teeth with defective enamel were seen in 23.9% o

Esthetics and smile characteristics from the layperson's perspective: a computer-based survey study.

BACKGROUND: The paradigm shift from occlusion to esthetics places more emphasis on the subtle relationships among the teeth and the interplay with the soft tissues. The authors of this study quantified the ideal and maximum acceptable deviations for smile characteristics. METHODS: The authors created a survey by using a digital image editing software package, which enabled raters to manipulate intraoral photographs featured in the survey. They altered smile characteristics in photos of a sex-neutral face showing nasal tip to mentolabial fold. The authors administered an electronic survey in B
