Epaxial muscle fiber architecture favors enhanced excursion and power in the leaper Galago senegalensis.

Galago senegalensis is a habitual arboreal leaper that engages in rapid spinal extension during push-off. Large muscle excursions and high contraction velocities are important components of leaping, and experimental studies indicate that during leaping by G. senegalensis, peak power is facilitated by elastic storage of energy. To date, however, little is known about the functional relationship between epaxial muscle fiber architecture and locomotion in leaping primates. Here, fiber architecture of select epaxial muscles is compared between G. senegalensis (n = 4) and the slow arboreal quadrupe

Sexual Dimorphism and Inter-Century Variability in Sella Turcica and Sphenoid Sinus Pneumatization: A Computed Tomography Study of the Romanian Population.

Background/Objectives: Identification of unknown individuals is an essential part of Forensic Medicine. Recent anthropological research has demonstrated subtle but consistent sexual dimorphism in the sella turcica, while indicating comparatively limited population-specific differences in its size, shape, and contour. The aim of this paper is to analyze the variability and sexual dimorphism of the sphenoid bone and to determine if there are statistically significant correlations between the sella turcica dimensions and the degree of pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus. Materials and Methods: W

Leprosy at the edge of Europe-Biomolecular, isotopic and osteoarchaeological findings from medieval Ireland.

Relatively little is known of leprosy in Medieval Ireland; as an island located at the far west of Europe it has the potential to provide interesting insights in relation to the historical epidemiology of the disease. To this end the study focuses on five cases of probable leprosy identified in human skeletal remains excavated from inhumation burials. Three of the individuals derived from the cemetery of St Michael Le Pole, Golden Lane, Dublin, while single examples were also identified from Ardreigh, Co. Kildare, and St Patrick's Church, Armoy, Co. Antrim. The individuals were radiocarbon dat

Elongatoolithid eggs containing oviraptorid (Theropoda, Oviraptorosauria) embryos from the Upper Cretaceous of Southern China.

BACKGROUND: Oviraptorids, like many other dinosaurs, clearly had a complex pattern of skeletal growth involving numerous morphological changes. However, many ontogenetic skeletal changes in oviraptorids were previously unclear due to the lack of well preserved specimens that represent very young developmental stages. RESULTS: Here we report three elongatoolithid dinosaur eggs from the Upper Cretaceous Nanxiong Formation of Nankang District, Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China that contain in ovo embryonic skeletons. The eggs themselves show diagnostic features of the oofamily Elongatoolithi

Increased Pelvic Incidence is Associated With a More Coronal Facet Orientation in the Lower Lumbar Spine: A Cadaveric Study of 599 Lumbar Spines.

STUDY DESIGN: An anatomic study of facet angle orientation and morphology of the lumbar spine was performed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine how age, gender, race, and pelvic incidence (PI) correlate with facet orientation in the lumbar spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Lumbar facet orientation has important implications in the development of numerous pathologies of the spine, including arthritis, spondylolisthesis, and adult spinal deformity. Preliminary reports have suggested that sagittal balance of the spine may contribute to facet joint orientation. We therefore desig

Calcaneal Scoring as an Adjunct to Modified Oxford Hip Scores: Prediction of Contralateral Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2 recent studies, modified Oxford hip scores of 16 through 18 have been shown to predict an extremely high risk of contralateral slipping in unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). However, the modified Oxford system is not widely used. This may be due, in part, to the complexity of the scoring system, difficulty in viewing all 5 radiographic features on a single x-ray and phenotypic variation in the features. Ossification of the calcaneal apophysis provides an osteologic marker of skeletal maturation in relation to peak height velocity and has been described previo

An assessment of early mandibular growth.

Quantification of skeletal data has been shown to be an effective and reliable method of demonstrating variation in human growth as well as for monitoring and interpreting growth. In South Africa as well as internationally, few researchers have assessed mandibular growth in late fetal period and early childhood and therefore standards for growth and age determination in these groups are limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate growth in the mandible from the period of 31 gestational weeks to 36 months postnatal. A total of 74 mandibles were used. Dried mandibles were sourced from the

Hand/foot splitting and the 're-evolution' of mesopodial skeletal elements during the evolution and radiation of chameleons.

BACKGROUND: One of the most distinctive traits found within Chamaeleonidae is their split/cleft autopodia and the simplified and divergent morphology of the mesopodial skeleton. These anatomical characteristics have facilitated the adaptive radiation of chameleons to arboreal niches. To better understand the homology of chameleon carpal and tarsal elements, the process of syndactyly, cleft formation, and how modification of the mesopodial skeleton has played a role in the evolution and diversification of chameleons, we have studied the Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus). We analysed limb

Endocranial anatomy of the earliest Cretaceous European neosuchian crocodyliform Pholidosaurus purbeckensis provides new evidence for the ecological evolution of Pholidosauridae.

The neosuchian crocodyliform clade Pholidosauridae had a near-cosmopolitan distribution, spanning the Late Jurassic to the early Paleocene. Representatives of the group inhabited aquatic environments, ranging from freshwater to potentially fully marine forms. The phylogenetic placement of Pholidosauridae within Neosuchia remains debated: whereas most analyses place it as closely related to Dyrosauridae, some studies argue for a closer relationship with Goniopholididae. One skeletal region that could shed light on both the phylogenetic position of Pholidosauridae, as well as how it achieved its

Exploration of the covariation signal between cortical bone and dentine volumes across the upper limb bones and anterior teeth in modern humans and relevance to evolutionary anthropology.

Cortical bone and dentine are two mineralized tissues sharing a common embryological origin, developmental, and genetic background, distinct from those of enamel. Understanding their relationship is crucial to decipher the factors acting on their postnatal development, and shedding light on the evolutionary patterns of tissue proportions. Here, we investigate the coordinated variation between cortical bone and dentine volumes measured from arm and forearm bones (humeri, ulnae, radii) and upper anterior teeth (central incisors, lateral incisors, canines) of modern humans. Given the shared chara

CT-Based Evaluation of Hounsfield Units-A Novel Screening Tool for Undiagnosed Osteoporosis in Patients with Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis.

Background: This institutional, register-based analysis aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using CT-based sacral Hounsfield units (HUs) for assessing bone density in pelvic fragility fractures and to explore their potential correlation with DEXA measurements and osteological laboratory diagnostics. Methods: Patients aged > 80 years, admitted between 2003 and 2019 with pelvic ring fractures, were analyzed in this retrospective single-center study. CT scans were evaluated according to the classification of fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFPs), which guided treatment decisions (conservative

Should we consider ankle fractures as osteoporotic fractures?

UNLABELLED: Since ankle fractures are common fractures in the lower limb, it is worth exploring their potential association with osteoporosis. As part of the research, patients with ankle fractures were screened for osteoporosis to assess its potential for identifying patients with osteoporosis (osteoporosis cases). Consequently, screening should be included as part of fracture management. Ankle fractures are part of the orthopaedic surgeon's daily routine. They are the most common lower limb fractures in the elderly. The absence of an age peak, such as that seen in distal radius fractures, ma

The postcranial skeletons of the Triassic mammals Eozostrodon, Megazostrodon and Erythrotherium.

The purposes of this monograph are to describe the postcranial skeletons of the earliest known mammals, and to probe, in so far as possible by osteological study, biological questions concerning the habits and adaptations of these late Triassic forms. In this context, information on the background of this investigation is useful. Studies of Mesozoic mammals, begun some 150 years ago, are based on rare and fragmentary fossils, principally jaws and teeth. These investigations have yielded a bare outline of some 120 million years of mammalian evolution-about two-thirds of mammalian history. No as

Scottish soldiers from the Battle of Dunbar 1650: A prosopographical approach to a skeletal assemblage.

After the Battle Dunbar between English and Scottish forces in 1650, captured Scottish soldiers were imprisoned in Durham and many hundreds died there within a few weeks. The partial skeletal remains of 28 of these men were discovered in 2013. Building on previous osteological work, here we report wide-ranging scientific studies of the remains to address the following questions: Did they have comparable diet, health and disease throughout their lives? Did they have common histories of movement (or lack of movement) during their childhoods? Can we create a collective biography of these men? Str

Chronic arsenicosis and cadmium exposure in wild snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) breeding near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (Canada), part 2: Manifestation of bone abnormalities and osteoporosis.

Various bone abnormalities, including osteoporosis, have been associated with chronic arsenic and cadmium exposure in experimental animal models, but information regarding the bone pathology of wild population of small mammals breeding in contaminated environment is limited. This present study was conducted to comparatively assess the prevalence and pattern of skeletal abnormalities in free ranging snowshoe hares inhabiting an area heavily contaminated by arsenic and other trace metals, near the vicinity of the abandoned Giant mine, and in a reference location approximately 20km from the city

Postcranial pneumaticity: an evaluation of soft-tissue influences on the postcranial skeleton and the reconstruction of pulmonary anatomy in archosaurs.

Postcranial pneumaticity has been reported in numerous extinct sauropsid groups including pterosaurs, birds, saurischian dinosaurs, and, most recently, both crurotarsan and basal archosauriform taxa. By comparison with extant birds, pneumatic features in fossils have formed the basis for anatomical inferences concerning pulmonary structure and function, in addition to higher-level inferences related to growth, metabolic rate, and thermoregulation. In this study, gross dissection, vascular and pulmonary injection, and serial sectioning were employed to assess the manner in which different soft

AutoBend: An Automated Approach for Estimating Intervertebral Joint Function from Bone-Only Digital Models.

Deciphering the biological function of rare or extinct species is key to understanding evolutionary patterns across the tree of life. While soft tissues are vital determinants of joint function, they are rarely available for study. Therefore, extracting functional signals from skeletons, which are more widely available via museum collections, has become a priority for the field of comparative biomechanics. While most work has focused on the limb skeleton, the axial skeleton plays a critical role in body support, respiration, and locomotion, and is therefore of central importance for understand

T-cell leukemia translocation-associated gene (TCTA) protein is required for human osteoclastogenesis.

Synovial tissues of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) include factors regulating bone resorption, such as receptor activator NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL), TNFalpha, IL-6, IL-17 and IFNgamma. However, in addition to these cytokines, other factors expressed in synovial tissues may play a role in resorbing bone. Here, our objective was to identify novel proteins expressed in synovial tissues of RA that regulate human osteoclastogenesis. Proteins were purified from synovial tissues of patients with RA, using gel filtration chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, reverse-aspect HPLC, and mas

Computed tomography reveals the endocranial anatomy of Crocodylia: Implications for phylogenetic relationships and ecomorphological convergence across Crocodylomorpha.

Living crocodylians (alligators, caimans, gavials and 'true' crocodiles) are the remnants of a broader clade, Crocodylomorpha, that displays high ecomorphological diversity, particularly in skull shape. However, there are several instances of ecomorphological convergence between distant lineages, especially pertaining to the independent acquisition of a long, slender, longirostrine snout. In some instances, it is difficult to determine whether extinct species belong to one longirostrine lineage or another, with this problem especially prevalent with regards to the gavialoid crocodylian clade.
