Confugenics - East Asian culture favors uptake of human cognitive enhancement and IVF genetic technologies amid demographic challenges.

This study examines the declining fertility rates in East Asian Confucian societies, focusing on the unique childrearing practices and how future advancements in human enhancement and reprogenetic technologies may further accelerate the demographic decline. The focus is on the obsession with "child perfectionism" driven by the pursuit of academic credentialism and hypercompetitive social norms. This phenomenon has roots in the historical imperial examinations of China and has evolved into modern college entrance exams. Recent growth in knowledge-based and technology-driven economies in East As

A review of the father-child relationship in the development and maintenance of adolescent anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

There are disproportionately fewer studies examining the role of the father in the development of child and adolescent psychopathology. This is pertinent in the field of eating disorders, where there is a wealth of research related to family influences and the value of family-based interventions. This article reviews the key themes within the literature around the potential impact of the father-child relationship on the development and maintenance of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa in young people. The critical review searched relevant health and social care databases, as well as manually searchi

Eating disorders: etiology, risk factors, and suggestions for prevention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The incidence of eating disorders has increased worldwide. This narrative review gives an overview of research on etiology and risk factors of eating disorders published in 2022-2024. RECENT FINDINGS: Eating disorders arise from a complex set of risk factors. The recent increase in incidence of eating disorders can be linked to root causes that include sociocultural pressure to conform to unrealistic and gendered body ideals, rise in obesogenic environments, and the global COVID-19 pandemic. Recent studies have shown that screen time and social media intensify sociocultural

An evaluation of the enhanced cognitive-behavioural model of bulimia nervosa.

The original cognitive-behavioural model of bulimia nervosa (BN) has been enhanced to include four additional maintaining mechanisms: low self esteem, clinical perfectionism, interpersonal problems, and mood intolerance. These models have been used to guide cognitive-behavioural treatment for BN, but the enhanced model has yet to be directly evaluated as a whole in a clinical sample. This study aimed to compare and evaluate the original and the enhanced cognitive-behavioural models of BN using structural equation modelling. The Eating Disorder Examination and self-report questionnaires were co

Cognitive behaviour therapy for eating disorders: a "transdiagnostic" theory and treatment.

This paper is concerned with the psychopathological processes that account for the persistence of severe eating disorders. Two separate but interrelated lines of argument are developed. One is that the leading evidence-based theory of the maintenance of eating disorders, the cognitive behavioural theory of bulimia nervosa, should be extended in its focus to embrace four additional maintaining mechanisms. Specifically, we propose that in certain patients one or more of four additional maintaining processes interact with the core eating disorder maintaining mechanisms and that when this occurs i

[A German version of the Eating Disorder Inventory EDI-2].

The paper presents a German version of the second revised edition of the Eating Disorder Inventory EDI-2 (Garner 1991). The EDI-2 is a self-rating inventory (self-report measure) with 91 items and 11 subscales designed for the assessment of attitudinal and behavioural dimensions relevant to anorexia and bulimia nervosa. It consists of the eight original subscales: drive for thinness, bulimia, body dissatisfaction, ineffectiveness, perfectionism, interpersonal distrust, interoception and maturity fears, and the three new subscales: asceticism, impulse regulation and social insecurity. The Germa

Is migraine related to the eating disorders?

Migraine and the eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa, share some common demographics, phenomenology, psychopathology, and treatments. Bulimics also appear to be more sensitive to the induction of severe migrainous headaches than controls following challenge with the 5-HT agonist, m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), but not placebo or L-tryptophan. This supports a common pathophysiological relationship involving postsynaptic 5-HT dysfunction between these disorders. In order to further explore the possible relationship between eating disorders and migraine, we administered a modified v

Associations Between Blood Levels of NLRP3 Inflammasome Components and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Even though the effect of inflammation on pathogenesis of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is known, information regarding the underlying mechanisms are yet to be revealed. The NLRP3 inflammasome complex is an important component of the innate immune system that initiates and mediates inflammatory response to a variety of stimuli. This study aims to inquire into a possible association between NLRP3 inflammasome complex and OCD. METHODS: This case-control study included 103 participants (51 cases with OCD and 52 healthy controls). All participants were evaluated with the Yale

Investigations of Personality Trait in Subacute Post-Stroke Patients: Some Preliminary Observations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Personality change is an important psychiatric complication following stroke linked to severe affective dysregulation and behavioral alterations. METHODS: We investigated personality traits in 20 patients (age 45.37 ± 13.41 years) with subacute stroke submitted to rehabilitation training within 1-3 months after a first-onset stroke. All patients underwent psychological evaluation by using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 for adults (PID-5), a specific instrument that enables traits (dimensions and facets) to be assessed by providing a personality profile, and the

A randomized controlled trial of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy vs stress management training for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recently, mindfulness-based therapies have emerged as a treatment modality for OCD, but there is sparse controlled data. We report the efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in treating OCD in comparison with stress management training (SMT). METHODS: 60 outpatients with DSM-IV-TR OCD attending a specialty OCD clinic were randomly assigned in 1:1 ratio to either MBCT (n=30) or SMT (n= 30). Both the groups received 12 weekly sessions of assigned intervention. An independent blind rater assessed the primary outcome measure at baseline and at the end of 12 weeks. RES

Parental bonding, childhood maltreatment and eating disorder psychopathology: an investigation of their interactions.

PURPOSE: Childhood trauma and parental bonding have been widely recognized as risk factors for eating disorders (EDs). However, their interplay in determining ED psychopathology has been poorly investigated. Consequently, we have assessed their interaction with core ED psychopathological symptoms. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with anorexia nervosa, 43 with bulimia nervosa and 77 healthy women completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Parental Bonding Instrument and the Eating Disorder Inventory-2. Chi square test and regression analyses with a moderation model were performed to inves

Personality-based subtypes of anorexia nervosa: examining validity and utility using baseline clinical variables and ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to empirically derive and validate clinically relevant personality-based subtypes of anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: Women (N = 116) with full or subthreshold AN completed baseline measures of personality, clinical variables, and eating disorder (ED) symptoms, followed by two weeks of ecological momentary assessment (EMA). A latent profile analysis was conducted to identify personality subtypes, which were compared on baseline clinical variables and EMA variables. RESULTS: The best-fitting model supported three subtypes: underregulated, overregulated, and low psy

Eating disorder pathology among overweight treatment-seeking youth: clinical correlates and cross-sectional risk modeling.

Preliminary research suggests that pediatric overweight is associated with increased eating disorder pathology, however, little is known about which overweight youth are most vulnerable to eating disorder pathology. We therefore investigated 122 overweight treatment-seeking youth to describe eating disorder pathology and mental health correlates, and to identify psychopathological constructs that may place overweight youth at increased risk for eating disorder pathology. Youth participated in a comprehensive assessment of eating disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, general psychopathology, a

Structuring the psychological "State" assessment process for sports psychologists: a proposal for a theory-based holistic model.

The aim of this perspective paper is to propose a theory-based holistic assessment model that structures the psychological state assessment process conducted by sport psychologists. It is observed that existing assessment approaches in the field of sports psychology largely focus on individual psychological variables, and measurement tools are mostly used independently of one another. This situation makes it difficult to comprehensively assess the multidimensional structure of the athlete's psychological profile and leads to a lack of standardization in application processes. The model was dev

Walking on eggshells: A life defined by obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), which is experienced by 2.1-7.9% of the population, is characterized by an excessive need for orderliness, neatness and perfectionism. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Existing studies on OCPD commonly focus on the physiological aspects, treatment and/or comparison of features with other disorders. Studies that explore the personal experiences related to OCPD are lacking and so the human element of this condition is missing. This paper contributes to this gap by presenting a glimpse into life with O
