Cataract development in bone marrow transplanted (BMT) patients was studied prospectively. There were 61 children, transplanted before the age of 18 years, who survived more than 1 year after transplantation. Patients transplanted for leukaemia (n = 43) were conditioned before BMT with cyclophosphamide (Cy) and total body irradiation (TBI). Patients with severe aplastic anaemia (SAA) (n = 9) only received Cy. None of the patients with SAA developed cataracts. All children with leukaemia, who were followed for at least 3 years (n = 37), developed lens posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSC). Cata

We retrospectively reviewed 542 consecutive cases of extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of a plano-convex laser ridge posterior chamber intraocular lens. We were interested in the incidence and probability of the development of postcapsular epithelial pearling that required laser capsulotomy and the risk factors associated with it. After four years of follow-up, 21% of all cases had developed pearling. Over the same period, the probability of pearling, as determined by the Kaplan-Meier curves, was 29% with a 95% confidence interval between 22% and 36%. After one year of follow

BACKGROUND: Posterior instability is less common than anterior instability but can be seen in contact athletes and posttraumatically. Distal tibial allograft reconstruction for glenoid bone loss was first described by Provencher and colleagues in 2009 and an arthroscopic technique for posterior glenoid reconstruction using a distal tibial allograft was later described by Gupta et al in 2013.
INDICATIONS: The primary indications for posterior distal tibial allograft include the failure of conservative management, recurrent instability after an arthroscopic stabilization, or glenoid bone loss >

PURPOSE: Describe the clinical features and management of this uncommon case of late-onset Capsular bag distension syndrome that occurred 33 years after cataract surgery.
OBSERVATION: An 87-year-old male was referred to our clinic complaining of blurred and gradual, painless reduction in vision in his left eye over the past year. A complete ophthalmological examination, Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), and optical biometry were performed to confirm the diagnosis. A 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy combined with posterior capsulotomy was per

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgical arthroscopy has become a usual operation to treat different pathologies such as internal derangements and degenerative joint diseases and osteoarthritis. Although many instruments such as palpators, forceps, scissors, scrapers, scalpels, and motorized terminals are needed to perform different arthroscopic surgical procedures, it is of paramount importance to have devices that allow the surgeon to cut and coagulate tissues safely. Coblation (cold ablation) is a process that using a radiofrequency electrical energy passing through saline solution and produc

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) is an ocular developmental disorder resulting from incomplete apoptosis of the embryonic hyaloid vasculature. Unilateral PHPV is traditionally associated with a poor prognosis because of the challenges associated with managing progressive anisometropic amblyopia. We report a child with unilateral PHPV who underwent cataract extraction, primary posterior capsulotomy with anterior vitrectomy and intraocular lens implantation followed by combined trabeculectomy/trabeculotomy within the first 8 weeks of life. Intensive optometric and orthoptic input

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most frequent complication associated with decreased vision after cataract surgery. Previous methods of preventing PCO have not proven to be practical, effective, and safe for routine clinical procedure, but some novel concepts and methods have recently been developed. This 2-part review looks at clinical and experimental investigations of PCO, focusing on developments since 1992. Clinical aspects will be presented in a later issue. This paper addresses (1) in vitro models for PCO research; (2) pathophysiology and molecular biology of lens epithelia

OBJECTIVES: The sense of smell plays an important role in daily life. Olfactory impairment can significantly affect an individual's quality of life. Topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are commonly used to treat elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). One potential side effect of these drugs is a loss of the sense of smell. This study is an examination of changes in olfactory function in patients who used dorzolamide and brinzolamide to control IOP after a laser capsulotomy.
METHODS: A total of 60 patients with posterior capsule opacification were included in the study. Sniffin' Sticks (Burgha

This study presents the results and complications of 389 patients who were treated with the Nd:YAG laser between September 1982 and November 1983 with at least a six-month follow-up. The majority of patients had a secondary discission of the posterior capsule. Other procedures included vitreolysis, iridotomy, pupilloplasty, synechialysis, intraocular suture cutting, cutting of intraocular lens haptics, and removal of anterior pseudophakic pigmented precipitates. We have purposely avoided performing preoperative laser anterior capsulotomies and have been unsuccessful in reopening freshly sealed

INTRODUCTION: Blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by complex orbito-palpebral anomalies. We report a rare case of BPES associated with bilateral congenital cataract.
OBSERVATION: This study reports the case of a 6-month-old infant with BPES in whom a bilateral congenital cataract was diagnosed, after the parents noticed leukocoria and signs of poor vision in their child. No other ophthalmologic manifestations commonly associated with this syndrome were found. The infant underwent cataract surgery first, with l

Femtosecond lasers represent a new frontier in cataract surgery. Since their introduction and first human treatment in 2008, a lot of new developments have been achieved. In this review article, the physical principle of femtolasers is discussed, together with the indications and side effects of the method in cataract surgery. The most important clinical results are also presented regarding capsulotomy, fragmentation of the crystalline lens, corneal wound creation, and refractive results. Safety issues such as endothelial and macular changes are also discussed. The most important advantage of

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication resulting from cataract surgery and limits the long-term postoperative visual outcome. Using Nd:YAG laser-assisted posterior capsulotomy for the clinical treatment of symptomatic PCO increases the risks of complications, such as glaucoma, retinal diseases, uveitis, and intraocular lens (IOL) pitting. Therefore, finding how to prevent PCO development is the subject of active investigations. As a replacement organ, the IOL is implanted into the lens capsule after cataract surgery, but it is also associated with the occurrence

The question remains unanswered regarding the role of repair of medial ligament injuries associated with subluxation of the elbow and non-reconstructable radial head fracture and whether or not this will decrease the risk of chronic instability and cubitus valgus. The goal of this study was to define the role of the medial ligamentous complex of the elbow in elbow instability and to describe the anatomy of the complex in 35 fresh-frozen cadaver elbows. We documented medial ligamentous complex anatomy and compared our results to those in the literature. 25 elbows were dissected in order to desc
