Parent-child relationships and dyadic friendship experiences as predictors of behavior problems in early adolescence.

This study focused on support and conflict in parent-child relationships and dyadic friendships as predictors of behavior problems in early adolescence (n = 182; M age = 12.9 years, 51% female, 45% African American, 74% two-parent homes). Support and conflict in one relationship context were hypothesized to moderate the effects of experiences in the other relationship context. Adolescent-reported antisocial behavior was low when either parent-child relationships or friendships were low in conflict, and adolescent-reported depressed mood was low when either friendship conflict was low or parent

Does cognitive impairment explain behavioral and social problems of children with neurofibromatosis type 1?

Thirty NF1-patients (mean age 11.7 years, SD = 3.3) and 30 healthy controls (mean age 12.5 years, SD = 3.1) were assessed on social skills, autistic traits, hyperactivity-inattention, emotional problems, conduct problems, and peer problems. Cognitive control, information processing speed, and social information processing were measured using 5 computer tasks. GLM analyses of variance showed significant group differences, to the disadvantage of NF1-patients, on all measures of behavior, social functioning and cognition. General cognitive ability (a composite score of processing speed, social in

Autism, ADHD, mental retardation and behavior problems in 100 individuals with 22q11 deletion syndrome.

This study assessed the prevalence and type of associated neuropsychiatric problems in children and adults with 22q11 deletion syndrome. One-hundred consecutively referred individuals with 22q11 deletion syndrome were given in-depth neuropsychiatric assessments and questionnaires screens. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and/or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were diagnosed in 44 cases. ASD was diagnosed in 23 cases of whom only 5 had autistic disorder. ADHD was diagnosed in 30 individuals. In nine of these cases with ASD or ADHD there was a combination of these diagnoses. Ment

Severity of alcohol use and problem behaviors among school-based youths in Puerto Rico.

OBJECTIVES: The present study sought to: (a) categorize youths into groups based on their level of alcohol use and number of symptoms of alcohol abuse and dependence defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), and (b) examine whether these categories were associated with other problem behaviors in which youths engage (marijuana use, sexual intercourse, and having been arrested or having trouble with the law). METHODS: The study is based on a cross-sectional survey administered to 972 school-based youths from one middle school and one high school in San Juan,

A model-based cluster analysis approach to adolescent problem behaviors and young adult outcomes.

Data from a community-based sample of 1,126 10th- and 11th-grade adolescents were analyzed using a model-based cluster analysis approach to empirically identify heterogeneous adolescent subpopulations from the person-oriented and pattern-oriented perspectives. The model-based cluster analysis is a new clustering procedure to investigate population heterogeneity utilizing finite mixture multivariate normal densities and accordingly to classify subpopulations using more rigorous statistical procedures for the comparison of alternative models. Four cluster groups were identified and labeled multi

Predicting early sexual activity with behavior problems exhibited at school entry and in early adolescence.

Youth who initiate sexual intercourse in early adolescence (age 11-14) experience multiple risks, including concurrent adjustment problems and unsafe sexual practices. The current study tested two models describing the links between childhood precursors, early adolescent risk factors, and adolescent sexual activity: a cumulative model and a meditational model. A longitudinal sample of 694 boys and girls from four geographical locations was utilized, with data collected from kindergarten through high school. Structural equation models revealed that, irrespective of gender or race, high rates of

Predicting depression, social phobia, and violence in early adulthood from childhood behavior problems.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined childhood behavior problems at ages 10 and 11 years as predictors of young adult depression, social phobia, and violence at age 21 years. METHOD: Data were collected as part of the Seattle Social Development Project, a longitudinal study of 808 elementary school students from high-crime neighborhoods of Seattle. Reports of childhood behavior problems were obtained from parents and children in fall 1985 and from teachers in spring 1986. Follow-up reports of violence and DSM-III-R depression and social phobia were collected from 765 respondents using standard surv

Coping with the stress of parental depression: parents' reports of children's coping, emotional, and behavioral problems.

Examined children's coping and involuntary responses to the stress of living with a depressed parent in relation to their symptoms of anxiety/depression and aggression. Sixty-six clinically depressed adults rated their children's (ages 7 to 17 years old; N = 101) coping and involuntary responses to parental stressors and anxiety/depressive and aggressive behavior symptoms. Based on parent report, children of depressed parents had high rates of symptoms of anxiety/depression and aggression, were exposed to moderate levels of parental stressors (parental intrusiveness, parental withdrawal), and

Maternal expressed emotion as a predictor of emotional and behavioral problems in low birth weight children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which maternal emotions expressed toward low birth weight infants (<2500 gm) at six months of age predicted emotional and behavioral problems at two years of age. With a sample of 83 mother-infant dyads, a Revised Five Minute Speech Sample (R-FMSS) was used to measure the Expressed Emotion (EE) constructs of Negative EE (criticism, hostility), Positive EE (positive remarks, warmth) and Overinvolved EE. Problem behaviors were measured at two years of the child's age utilizing the Child Behavior Checklist/2-3. Infant temperament was contro

Temperamental origins of child and adolescent behavior problems: from age three to age fifteen.

We assessed relations between early temperament and behavior problems across 12 years in an unselected sample of over 800 children. Temperament measures were drawn from behavior ratings made by examiners who observed children at ages 3, 5, 7, and 9. Factor analyses revealed 3 dimensions at each age: Lack of Control, Approach, and Sluggishness. Temperament dimensions at ages 3 and 5 were correlated in theoretically coherent ways with behavior problems that were independently evaluated by parents and teachers at ages 9 and 11, and by parents at ages 13 and 15. Lack of Control was more strongly a

Very low birth weight children: behavior problems and school difficulty in a national sample.

We addressed three questions concerning the behavioral and academic status of low and very low birth weight infants through a secondary analysis of the 1981 National Health Interview Survey--Child Health Supplement: (1) in children born with very low birth weight, what is the risk of behavior problems and school difficulty compared with that in heavier low birth weight and normal birth weight children? (2) What are the correlates of school difficulty? (3) Are behavior problems associated with school difficulty when variables are controlled for these correlates? The analysis revealed that 34% o

Behavior problems in children with pure speech disorders and in children with combined speech and language disorders.

Forty-six children with pure speech disorders and 53 children with disorders of both speech and language were rated by parents and teachers for behavioral problems. Both parents and teachers rated the speech- and language-disordered children as having more severe and more frequent behavioral abnormalities, particularly hyperactive behaviors and developmental problems. Somatic complaints were more pronounced in the pure speech group. Conduct disorders, emotional problems, and poor relationships did not distinguish between the two groups. The importance of these findings for speech therapists an

Pandemic-related stressors and social resources differentially predict competence and problem behavior trajectories of young children born during the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted family life and children's social worlds, disproportionately impacting structurally disadvantaged families. In a cohort of children born during the pandemic (N = 407, 51% male, 33.3% racially/ethnically minoritized), we modeled latent growth curves with children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors and social-emotional competence, assessed at 3 time points beginning at ∼15 months. Pandemic stressors had immediate impacts on behavior problems, associated with higher initial levels but not change over time. Conversely, pandemic impacts on competence showed

Stock and cryptocurrency trading and problem gambling behavior during early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic: a narrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in a global shift in gambling and trading behaviors. At present, a gap exists in understanding the relationship between excessive trading behavior and problem gambling, especially during the COVID-19 period. This narrative review analyzed (1) the changes in trading and gambling activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) whether the pattern of trading activity resembles problem gambling, and (3) whether excessive trading and problem gambling share similar consequences. METHODS: We searched databases such as Medline, PsychINFO, Sco

General and substance-specific predictors of young adult nicotine dependence, alcohol use disorder, and problem behavior: replication in two samples.

BACKGROUND: This paper presents two replications of a heuristic model for measuring environment in studies of gene-environment interplay in the etiology of young adult problem behaviors. METHODS: Data were drawn from two longitudinal, U.S. studies of the etiology of substance use and related behaviors: the Raising Healthy Children study (RHC; N=1040, 47% female) and the Minnesota Twin Family Study (MTFS; N=1512, 50% female). RHC included a Pacific Northwest, school-based, community sample. MTFS included twins identified from state birth records in Minnesota. Both studies included commensurate

The relations of problem behavior status to children's negative emotionality, effortful control, and impulsivity: concurrent relations and prediction of change.

The relations of children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors to their concurrent regulation, impulsivity (reactive undercontrol), anger, sadness, and fearfulness and these aspects of functioning 2 years prior were examined. Parents and teachers completed measures of children's (N = 185; ages 6 through 9 years) adjustment, negative emotionality, regulation, and behavior control; behavioral measures of regulation also were obtained. In general, both internalizing and externalizing problems were associated with negative emotionality. Externalizers were low in effortful regulation

Quantity of nonmaternal care and boys' problem behavior/adjustment at ages 3 and 5: exploring the mediating role of parenting.

To examine the effects of quantity of nonmaternal care across the first 3 and 5 years of life on problem behavior and affective-cognitive indices of adjustment, and to test the hypotheses that parenting mediates effects of nonmaternal care, 120 working- and middle-class, two-parent Caucasian families rearing firstborn sons were studied. More time in nonmaternal care across the first 3 and 5 years predicted more mother-reported externalizing problems when children were ages 3 and 5 (and somewhat more father-reported externalizing problems at age 5), as well as more negative mothering and less p

Associations of Nicotine Use with Reduced Wellbeing and Increased Problem Behaviors Among German Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Among US-adolescents, nicotine use, especially dual use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes is associated with poor mental health outcomes. This study examines associations between different nicotine use profiles and wellbeing and problem behaviors among German adolescents. METHODS: A school-based survey was conducted in secondary schools between November 2024 and February 2025 in 116 schools from 14 out of 16 federal German states. Symptoms of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems were assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Wellbeing was assessed

Early-life exposure to non-optimal temperature and emotional and behavioral problems in preschool children.

BACKGROUND: The effects of early-life exposure to extreme temperatures on adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes have been increasingly investigated. However, less attention has been given to emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs). This study aimed to examine the association between early-life exposure to non-optimal temperature and EBPs among preschool children aged 2 - 6 years. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among over 4000 preschool children in Guangzhou, China. EBPs were assessed using the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Gambling behaviors associated with problem gambling among patients in treatment for substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Problem gambling impacts substance use disorder (SUD) treatment outcomes. To support early intervention, this study investigated gambling behaviors associated with problem gambling among SUD patients. METHODS: Patients (N = 593) from 19 residential SUD treatment facilities in California were surveyed about gambling behaviors and services. Patients identified as "problem gamblers" screened positive for gambling disorder or reported gambling behaviors at high risk for progression to gambling disorder. Multivariate regression analyses compared problem gamblers to nonpr
