The brain of the tree pangolin (Manis tricuspis). I. General appearance of the central nervous system.

Here, we describe the superficial appearance of the brain of the rarely studied tree pangolin. Phylogenetic analyses have placed the pangolins, order Pholidota, as a sister group to the order Carnivora. The majority of features visible on the surface of the tree pangolin brain, and its overall appearance can be described as typically mammalian. The pattern of sulci and gyri, while simple, appears very similar to that observed in carnivores. Two derived features of the Pholidota were observed, the first being the rostral decussation of the pyramidal tract, which instead of occurring at the spin

Axonal transport along retinal ganglion cells is grossly intact during reduced function post-injury.

It has been established that beyond middle age, mice are slower to recover inner retinal function following an acute intraocular pressure (IOP) injury. While 3 month old animals exhibit near-complete recovery 1 week following injury, 12 and 18 month old animals demonstrate prolonged inner retinal dysfunction. In this study we aim to determine whether age-related differences in functional recovery of the inner retina are due to differences in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axonal transport. C57BL/6J mice at 3 (n = 8) and 18 months (n = 8) of age were used. At day 0, right eyes were cannulated and

[Protective effects of transplantation of hCNTF-transfected cell line on axotomy-induced degeneration of retinal ganglion cells].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effects of transplantation of cell line stably expressing and secreting human ciliary neurotrophic factor (hCNTF) on the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) after optic nerve transection. METHODS: Plasmid encoding hCNTF was transfected into human lung fibroblast (HLF) cell line, then the stably transfected clones were selected with methopterin. In adult SD rats, RGCs were labeled with retrograde axonal tracer fluorogold (FG) injected to their targets including dorsal lateral geniculate nuclei (dLGN) and superior colliculi (SC). Seven days lat

Spatiotemporal pattern of ontogenetic expression of calbindin-28/kD in the retinorecipient layers of rat superior colliculus.

Using an antibody against calbindin-28kD, we have studied the spatial pattern of expression of this protein in the superior colliculi (SC) of four strains of mature laboratory rats. In all four strains, calbindin-expressing cells (CECs) formed horizontally oriented tiers in the retinorecipient and intermediate gray layers but were diffusely distributed throughout the deep layers. Ontogenetically, calbindin-28kD was expressed for the first time in the retinorecipient layers at postconceptional day 20 (PCD 20), by cells located in the rostrolateral region where the first born retinal ganglion ce

Effects of ocular hypertension in the visual system of pigmented mice.

To study the effects of ocular hypertension (OHT) on the visual system of C57BL/6 pigmented mice, the limbal and episcleral veins of the left eye were laser photocoagulated (LP). LP increased the intraocular pressure during the first five days (d), reaching basal values at 7d. To investigate the effect of OHT on the retinal ganglion cell (RGC) retrograde axonal transport, hydroxistilbamidine methanesulfonate (OHSt) was applied to both superior colliculi (SCi) and the retinas were dissected 2 or 4 weeks after LP. To determine RGC survival, these same retinas were immunoreacted against Brn3a (ge

Lack of cross modal plasticity potentially linked to ongoing activation of visual cortex and superior colliculus in the rd10 mouse model of retinitis pigmentosa.

Efforts in vision restoration have been focused on a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, where photoreceptors in the retina degenerate while the rest of the visual pathway remain mostly intact. Retinal implants that directly stimulate retinal ganglion cells have shown promising but limited results in patients so far. Apart from technical limitations, cross-modal plasticity of visual areas might contribute to this problem. We therefore investigated if the primary visual cortex (V1) of the rd10 mouse model for retinal degeneration became more sensitive to auditory or tactile sensory inputs. A

Sex Difference in the Morphology of Pineal Gland in Adults Based on Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

PURPOSE: We aimed to figure out the anatomical features of pineal gland region on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to explore the sex difference in pineal gland-related parameters with increasing age. METHODS: We measured the pineal gland on MRI images from 198 healthy adults (96 males and 102 females). Included subjects were divided into 4 age groups. After 3-dimensional reconstruction, the anatomic features of pineal gland and its distances to superior colliculus and splenium of corpus callosum were analyzed in each group. The prevalence of cystic pineal gland was calculated. Moreover,

Transplantation with retinal progenitor cells repairs visual function in rats with retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

The retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (RIR) is a common pathological process that leads to progressive visual loss and blindness in many retinal diseases such as retinal vascular occlusion disease, diabetic retinopathy, and acute glaucoma. Currently, there has been no effective therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of transplantation of retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) into the subretinal space (SRS) and the superior colliculus (SC) in a rat model of RIR injury. We used cultured postnatal day 1 rat RPCs transfected with adeno-associated virus containing the cDNA en

BOLD responses in the superior colliculus and lateral geniculate nucleus of the rat viewing an apparent motion stimulus.

In rats, the superior colliculus (SC) is a main destination for retinal ganglion cells and is an important subcortical structure for vision. Electrophysiology studies have observed that many SC neurons are highly sensitive to moving objects, but complementary non-invasive functional imaging studies with larger fields of view have been rarely conducted. In this study, BOLD fMRI is used to measure the SC and nearby lateral geniculate nucleus' (LGN) hemodynamic responses, in normal adult Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, during a dynamic visual stimulus similar to those used in long-range apparent motion

Pupil perimetry demonstrates hemifield pupillary hypokinesia in a patient with a pretectal lesion causing a relative afferent pupil defect but no visual field loss.

BACKGROUND: Lesions affecting the pretectum or the brachium of the superior colliculus (brachium) and sparing the optic tract cause a contralateral relative afferent pupil defect (RAPD) but no visual field loss. It has been assumed that the pupillomotor pathways within the brachium are a continuation of the pupillomotor pathways traveling in the optic tract. To investigate this assumption, we looked for hemihypokinesia by means of pupil perimetry. METHODS: Pupillary hemifield stimulation was performed in a 65-year-old woman with normal visual fields and an isolated left RAPD due to a cerebral

Disruption of reflexive attention and eye movements in an individual with a collicular lesion.

The superior colliculus (SC) plays a central role in the control of saccadic eye movements and has also been implicated in control of covert spatial attention. While there is a growing body of evidence from studies of awake behaving primates that supports these proposals, direct evidence from humans has been sparse. In the present study we tested a patient with thiamine deficiency and a lesion of the SC, who performed both eye movement tasks (prosaccades and antisaccades, with or without a gap) and a covert spatial attention task assessing inhibition of return (IOR). For eye movements, the gap

Distribution of the phosphorylated form of microtubule associated protein 1B in the fish visual system during optic nerve regeneration.

Microtubule associated proteins are a heterogeneous group of proteins that have been implicated in regulating microtubule stability. They play an important role in the organisation of the neuronal cytoskeleton during neurite outgrowth, plasticity and regeneration. The fish visual system presents a considerable degree of plasticity. Thus, the retina grows continually throughout life and the optic nerve regenerates after crush. In the present study, we compared the distribution of the microtubule associated protein 1B in its phosphorylated form (MAP1B-phos) in the normal adult fish visual system

Protection against dopaminergic nigrostriatal cell death by excitatory input ablation.

The importance of enhanced glutamatergic neurotransmission in the basal ganglia and related structures has recently been highlighted in the development of Parkinson's disease. The pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPN) is the major origin of excitatory, glutamatergic input to dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons of which degeneration is well known to cause Parkinson's disease. Based on the concept that an excitatory mechanism mediated by glutamatergic neurotransmission underlies the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, we made an attempt to test the hypothesis that removal of the gluta

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone-immunoreactive neurons and associated nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase-positive neurons in the brain of a teleost, Rhodeus amarus.

Using combined nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPHd) histochemistry and salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone (sGnRH) immunocytochemistry, it is reported for the first time that possible potential contacts occur between the nitric oxide (NO)- and the GnRH-containing neurons in the brain of a freshwater teleost, Rhodeus amarus. GnRH-immunoreactive (ir) neurons were observed in the olfactory nerve (OLN), olfactory bulb (OB), medial olfactory tract (MOT), ventral telencephalon (VT), nucleus preopticus periventricularis (NPP), nucleus lateralis tuberis (NLT), and midbrain

Development of primary visual projections occurs entirely postnatally in the fat-tailed dunnart, a marsupial mouse, Sminthopsis crassicaudata.

We have examined the development of retinal projections in a diminutive polyprotodont marsupial, the fat-tailed dunnart, Sminthopsis crassicaudata. Here, we document the most immature mammalian visual system at birth described to date. At postnatal day (P) 0, the retinal ganglion cell layer has yet to form, and axons have not entered the optic stalk. By P4, the retinal ganglion cell layer could be distinguished at the posterior pole, and the front of growing axons extended one-third the length of the optic stalk, a distance of approximately 150 microm; a few pioneer growth cones had grown beyo

MR imaging of slow axonal transport in vivo.

Three magnetopharmaceuticals based on a monocrystalline iron oxide nanocompound (MION) are evaluated as potential contrast agents for demonstrating axonal transport in vivo by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. One agent has a strong positive charge, one has a strong negative charge, and the third is covalently linked to wheat germ agglutinin, a plant lectin with a high affinity for axon terminals. All three agents were tagged with rhodamine, and fluorescence microscopy was used to determine their fate after administration and to validate the imaging results. Following injection into or near var

The neurobiology of blindsight.

Some patients can respond to visual stimuli presented within their clinically absolute visual field defects that have been caused by partial destruction of striate cortex. This puzzling phenomenon of looking, pointing, detecting and discriminating without seeing has been called blindsight, and has fascinated philosophers and neuroscientists alike as a spotlight on the nature of unconscious or covert awareness, and the means it provides of studying the visual information carried by pathways other than the major route through the striate cortex.

Regulation of cerebello-cortical transmission in the rat ventromedial thalamic nucleus.

On the basis of antidromic stimulation we have identified two distinct neuronal populations in the rat ventromedial thalamic nucleus. The largest population (96%) are thalamo-cortical relay cells which project via the internal capsule to the cerebral cortex. The smaller population of cells (4%) project caudally to the reticular formation and superior colliculus. These two cell types could be distinguished further on the basis of their patterns of spontaneous discharge. Relay cells fluctuate between two activity patterns (i) a rhythmic pattern characterized by periods of high-frequency bursting

Simple reaction times to lateralized visual stimuli in a case of callosal agenesis.

Simple reaction times (RTs) of a young acallosal woman were measured using three different intensity levels of the visual stimulus. It was found that "'crossed" stimulus/hand combinations yielded finger RTs about 20 msec longer, on average, than "uncrossed" combinations. In addition, an inverse relation was found between stimulus intensity and the magnitude of this crossed/uncrossed difference in RT. It was also found that vocal RTs displayed a large advantage (18 msec) for right visual-field stimulation. It is suggested that the stimulus information in crossed finger reactions must cross the
