Performance and making material histories of racialising violence in medicine.

This article argues that gynaecology has historically understood Black women's reproductive organs as a site of resource extraction, not healing and that contemporary performance offers a way to make the power relations entailed in this abstract visible. The histories of the transatlantic slave trade and gynaecology are intertwined and inform how the medical system interacts with Black women today. 'Father of gynaecology' and 19th-century American physician J. Marion Sims (1813-1883) was dependent on slavery in order to conduct experiments on enslaved Black women's reproductive organs-notably

Is racism like other trauma exposures? Examining the unique mental health effects of racial/ethnic discrimination on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Although scholars have increasingly drawn attention to the potentially traumatic nature of racial/ethnic discrimination, diagnostic systems continue to omit these exposures from trauma definitions. This study contributes to this discussion by examining the co-occurrence of conventional forms of potentially traumatic experiences (PTEs) with in-person and online forms of racism-based potentially traumatic experiences (rPTEs) like racial/ethnic discrimination. Additionally, we investigated the unique association of rPTEs with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD),

US black women's pregnancy communication networks: A qualitative network analysis.

The ongoing Black maternal health crisis necessitates a closer examination of how Black women in the United States utilize communication to mitigate the dangers racism poses for pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of supportive networks to Black women's wellbeing during pregnancy. However, few studies utilize a qualitative network approach to explore communication about pregnancy and related risks within a social network. Twenty-eight Black women from 12 US states who self-identified as previously, currently or recently pregnant, were

Incarceration and Cancer-Related Outcomes (ICRO) study protocol: using a mixed-methods approach to investigate the role of incarceration on cancer incidence, mortality and quality of care.

INTRODUCTION: Incarceration is associated with decreased cancer screening rates and a higher risk for hospitalisation and death from cancer after release from prison. However, there is a paucity of data on the relationship between incarceration and cancer outcomes and quality of care. In the Incarceration and Cancer-Related Outcomes Study, we aim to develop a nuanced understanding of how incarceration affects cancer incidence, mortality and treatment, and moderates the relationship between socioeconomic status, structural racism and cancer disparities. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will use a sequ

Structural barriers to sexual and reproductive health care among Black and Latina cisgender and transgender U.S. women who use drugs: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Black and Latina women and women who use drugs in the United States (U.S.) face multilevel barriers to receiving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care that meets their needs. Although prior research has investigated barriers to SRH care among Black and Latina women in general, no study of which we are aware has examined how structural inequities shape the SRH care experiences of Black and Latina women who use drugs in particular in relation to multiple intersecting systems of oppression. METHODS: Using a stratified purposive sampling strategy, we conducted in-depth interviews

Racial disparities in Black men with prostate cancer: A literature review.

Black men are disproportionately affected by prostate cancer (PCa), with earlier presentation, more aggressive disease, and higher mortality rates versus White men. Furthermore, Black men have less access to PCa treatment and experience longer delays between diagnosis and treatment. In this review, the authors discuss the factors contributing to racial disparities and present solutions to improve access to care and increase clinical trial participation among Black men with PCa. Racial disparities observed among Black men with PCa are multifaceted, evolving from institutional racism. Cultural f

"It Wasn't Like I Was Trying to Run to Weed Right Away, I Wanted Other Options": A Qualitative Study of Prenatal Healthcare Experiences Among Latina Birthing People Using Cannabis in California.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit substance during pregnancy. Negative health and social outcomes associated with cannabis use disproportionately affect birthing people of color, particularly Latinas. Latina birthing people face compounding barriers to prenatal care, including discrimination, immigration-related fears, and distrust of healthcare systems rooted in histories of obstetric racism. This study examines the perspectives and experiences of Latina birthing people in California as they navigate prenatal care while using cannabis. METHOD: We conducted qualitative, se

Prevalence of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases according to Color/Race in Brazil: An Analysis of the 2019 National Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: This study examines racial disparities in the prevalence of noncommunicable chronic diseases (CNCDs) in Brazil. It also assesses whether these disparities persist after adjusting for sociodemographic factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 2019 National Health Survey. The sample included 94,114 individuals aged 15 years or older. Fifteen self-reported CNCD outcomes were analyzed. Color or race was the main independent variable. Age and sex were treated as confounders, while education and income were conceptualized as socioeconomic mediators. Addi

Policy and practice recommendations for residential addiction treatment: a qualitative investigation on increasing equity in treatment for Black patients.

BACKGROUND: Addiction treatment in the US is less effective for Black patients compared to their White peers. Barriers to appealing, effective, and equitable treatment exist both outside and within and treatment settings. Residential treatment is an important part of the continuum of care and is associated with improvement across substance use and life domains. However, this setting can be particularly uncomfortable for Black patients because it requires them to live in an environment that may not adequately support them. METHODS: Building on a multi-year community-engaged project to improve

Understanding COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among Black pregnant individuals: a mixed methods study of social media messenger and content type preferences.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant individuals are at increased risk of developing severe illness from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). They also tend to be vaccine-hesitant, which is even more pronounced in certain racial and ethnic minority groups. The study objective was to determine whether social media advertisements promoting COVID-19 vaccination could influence vaccination likelihood among pregnant and recently pregnant participants who self-identified as Black or African American. METHODS: Participants were interviewed individually or in focus groups to explore their attitudes toward vaccinat

Predictors of Past-Year Formal and Informal Mental Health Services Utilization Among Young Black Sexually Minoritized Men Living with HIV in Atlanta, GA.

Young Black sexually minoritized men living with HIV (SMM-LWH) face interlocking systems of oppression, including racism, homophobia, and HIV-related stigma, that negatively affect mental health. While mental health services can alleviate some of these inequities, many young Black SMM do not access them. This study aimed to examine factors associated with formal (e.g., psychologists) and informal (e.g., peer support groups) mental health service use among young Black SMM-LWH in Atlanta, GA. Between April 2021 and November 2022, we surveyed 200 young Black SMM aged 18-29 years (mean: 25). Guide

Contribution of Health Care Practitioner and Maternity Services Factors to Racial Disparities in Alabama: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Black patients are three times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than White patients in the United States, and Alabama has the third worst maternal mortality rate in the nation. We sought to identify health care practitioner and maternity service factors contributing to disparities in Alabama, as well as potential strategies to address these contributors. METHODS: We conducted key informant interviews with obstetricians, nurses, doulas, lactation counselors, health system administrators, and representatives of professional organizations who deliver maternity care to ra

Health Disparities in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) in the United States.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) occurs at conception and is often diagnosed decades prior to kidney failure. Nephrology care and transplantation access should be independent of race and ethnicity. However, institutional racism and barriers to health care may affect patient outcomes in ADPKD. We sought to ascertain the effect of health disparities on outcomes in ADPKD by examining age at onset of kidney failure and access to preemptive transplantation and transplantation after dialysis initiation. Factors contributing to delayed diagnosis of cancer among Aboriginal people in Australia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Delayed presentation of symptomatic cancer is associated with poorer survival. Aboriginal patients with cancer have higher rates of distant metastases at diagnosis compared with non-Aboriginal Australians. This paper examined factors contributing to delayed diagnosis of cancer among Aboriginal Australians from patient and service providers' perspectives. METHODS: In-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted in two stages (2006-2007 and 2011). Inductive thematic analysis was assisted by use of NVivo looking around delays in presentation, diagnosis and referral for canc

Hypertension in blacks: clinical overview.

Although the decline in stroke and other cardiovascular morbid and mortal events has been occurring since the 1940s, the steeper decline since 1968 has been attributed to improved hypertension awareness, treatment, and control. However, in spite of this encouraging trend from the population in general, surveys from the 1970s and our more recent survey from the Maryland Hypertension Program indicate that hypertension control among blacks remains unacceptably poor, particularly in view of the high prevalence. Of special concern are black men, who have the highest prevalence of any group and the

Contraceptive use and condomless sex among sexually experienced disabled and non-disabled White, Black, and Hispanic female adolescents and young adults aged 18-25 in the United States.

Background Disabled and racial and ethnic minority women experience barriers to contraceptive access, autonomy, and method preference, yet little research examines these experiences at the intersection of marginalized identities. Our study objective was to examine associations between disability status, race, ethnicity, and contraceptive use among female adolescents and young adults. Methods We analyzed data from three consecutive waves of the National Survey of Family Growth (2011-2013, 2013-2015, 2015-2017) focusing on disabled and non-disabled White, Black, and Hispanic females aged 18-25 i

Indigenous youth mental health: an ecological approach to understanding risk and protective factors for Māori youth in Aotearoa New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: Māori (Indigenous) youth of Aotearoa New Zealand are experiencing widening inequities in mental health when compared to Pākehā (New Zealand European/other European/"White"; cultural majority) youth. This study used an ecological approach to investigate key risk and protective factors for Māori to help prioritise actions. METHODS: A subsample of Māori participants (N = 1,528) from a large representative cross-sectional secondary dataset on secondary school students' health and wellbeing (Youth'19) were used to examine the effects of explanatory variables selected from five domains

A quality improvement approach to integrating social determinants of health objectives into pediatric simulation.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities and the unequal distribution of social resources impact health outcomes. By considering social determinants of health (SDH), clinicians can provide holistic and equitable care. However, barriers such as lack of time or understanding of the relevance of SDH to patient care prevent providers from addressing SDH. Simulation curricula may improve learners' ability to address SDH in practice. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to increase the percentage of pediatric emergency simulations that included SDH objectives from 5% to 50% in 12 months at one institution.

Headache disorders among Indigenous communities: A scoping review undertaken with knowledge keeper guidance.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a scoping review of literature on headache etiology, classification, prevalence, and treatment in Indigenous communities in Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. BACKGROUND: In the United States, analysis of national prevalence indicates that Indigenous Americans lead all other racial/ethnic groups in headache prevalence. Risk factors associated with headache burden, including diabetes, head injury, psychological trauma, environmental exposures, and lack of access to appropriate diagnosis and treatment, have been documented in Indigenous communities ac
