Neural activity during affect labeling predicts expressive writing effects on well-being: GLM and SVM approaches.

Affect labeling (putting feelings into words) is a form of incidental emotion regulation that could underpin some benefits of expressive writing (i.e. writing about negative experiences). Here, we show that neural responses during affect labeling predicted changes in psychological and physical well-being outcome measures 3 months later. Furthermore, neural activity of specific frontal regions and amygdala predicted those outcomes as a function of expressive writing. Using supervised learning (support vector machines regression), improvements in four measures of psychological and physical healt

Predicting and enhancing American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination performance: does writing questions really help?

BACKGROUND: The generative learning model posits that individuals remember content they have generated better than materials created by others. The goals of this study were to evaluate question generation as a study method for the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination (ABSITE) and determine whether practice test scores and other data predict ABSITE performance. METHODS: Residents (n = 206) from 6 general surgery programs were randomly assigned to one of the two study conditions. One group wrote questions for practice examinations. All residents took 2 practice examinations. RESUL

Effect of electron beam irradiation on forensic evidence. 2. Analysis of writing inks on porous surfaces.

The effect of electron beam irradiation on a series of different writing inks is described. As the anthrax-tainted letters were discovered in October 2001, the U.S. government began to experiment with the use of the electron beam irradiation process for destroying such biological agents. Plans initially considered a large-scale countrywide use of this technology. However, over time the scope of this plan as well as the radiation dosage were reduced, especially when some adverse consequences to mailed items subjected to this process were observed. Little data existed at the time to characterize

Direct-Write Printing Flexible Ion Channels with Graphene Oxide/Tannic Acid/Cellulose Nanofibers.

Flexible ion channels perform directional ion transport with high mechanical strength, which could bring many important intelligent applications. In this study, composite ink of graphene oxide (GO), tannic acid (TA), and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) is direct-write printed into a GO/TA/CNF porous structure (PS) with a freeze-dried process. With the negative charge of hydroxyl (-OH), carboxyl (-COOH), and phenolic hydroxyl (Ar-OH), the GO/TA/CNF PS of 3 cm length, 3 cm width, and 7 μm thickness realizes a maximum potential of 0.13 V and a maximum current density of 26.7 A/m2 in KCl solution with a

An online educational model in andrology for student training in the art of scientific writing in the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the suspension of the annual Summer Internship at the American Center for Reproductive Medicine (ACRM). To transit it into an online format, an inaugural 6-week 2020 ACRM Online Mentorship Program was developed focusing on five core pillars of andrology research: scientific writing, scientific methodology, plagiarism understanding, soft skills development and mentee basic andrology knowledge. This study aims to determine mentee developmental outcomes based on student surveys and discuss these within the context of the relevant teaching and learning methodo

[Existence, Absence and Power of Madness: A Critical Review of Michel Foucault's Writings on the History and Philosophy of Madness].

This article discusses Michel Foucault's main writings on "madness and psychiatry" from his early works up to the 1970s. On the one hand, we reconstruct the overall theoretical and methodological development of his positions over the course of the different periods in his oeuvre. On the other hand, we also take a closer look at Foucault's philosophical considerations regarding the subjects of his investigations. After an initial introduction of our conceptual approach, we draw on the most recent research on Foucault to show to what extent the phenomenological description of the topic at hand a

A retrospective analysis of the sentence writing component of the Mini Mental State Examination: cognitive and affective aspects.

BACKGROUND: One of the components of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is the request to write a sentence. We investigated the relationship between the characteristics of the written sentence of the MMSE and the cognitive and affective status of elderly patients. METHODS: The characteristics of the sentence were compared to the total MMSE score, sociodemographic characteristics, tests evaluating cognition and affective status, and diagnoses. RESULTS: The number of words was significantly associated with the degree of cognitive impairment, whereas the emotional polarity of sentences an

Central and peripheral components of writing critically depend on a defined area of the dominant superior parietal gyrus.

Classical neuropsychological models of writing separate central (linguistic) processes common to oral spelling, writing and typing from peripheral (motor) processes that are modality specific. Damage to the left superior parietal gyrus, an area of the cortex involved in peripheral processes specific to handwriting, should generate distorted graphemes but not misspelled words, while damage to other areas of the cortex like the frontal lobe should produce alterations in written and oral spelling without distorted graphemes. We describe the clinical and neuropsychological features of a patient wi

A case study of acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia in cantonese: evidence for nonsemantic pathways for reading and writing chinese.

We report a Cantonese-speaking brain-damaged patient, CML, who demonstrates better oral reading than oral naming and better writing to dictation than written naming. Such dissociations are taken as evidence for nonsemantic routes for the production of spoken and written Chinese words. The occurrence of tonal errors in CML's reading aloud informs us about the structure of phonological representations. We propose that it is a nonlinear structure, similar to that which has been proposed in tonal phonology of Chinese. Specific impairment to these representations may lead to a dissociation between

[The issue of "moral" therapies in the treatment the mentally ill as presented in Polish medical writing in the 1830s and 1840s].

The beginning of the 1830s sees the appearance of a specialist approach to psychiatric topics in Polish scientific writing. The author discusses the two first scientific works in the field. The first is the little publicized and underestimated--in Polish historiography--work by the physician Józef Jakubowski of Cracow. The dissertation, entitled O metodzie psychicnej (On the psychic method), appeared in print in 1831. The other work discussed is the hitherto unknown manuscript of the dissertation O porzadku w domu zdrowia (On order in the health-house) written by professor Józef Korzeniowski o

Mathematics-Writing Assessments: An Analysis of Prompts and Scoring Methods on Performance of Students With and Without Mathematics Difficulty.

Mathematics writing occurs regularly in classroom instruction, on state assessments, and as part of research. Yet, little research measures how student outcomes may differ across mathematics-writing prompt structures and scoring methods. We examined how students with and without mathematics difficulty (MD) performed across mathematics-writing prompt structures (i.e., problem-solving steps and problem-solving response method) and scoring methods (i.e., holistic and elements rubrics). We sampled 375 Grade 4 students with and without MD. Each student completed one of four mathematics-writing prom

Scratching Lithography: In Situ Mechanical Exfoliation of van der Waals Materials for Direct-Write Circuits.

Ever since the discovery of graphene via mechanical exfoliation of graphite, 2D nanomaterials have garnered wide interest for high-performance electronics. Mechanical exfoliation of van der Waals (vdW) layered materials produces nearly perfect 2D nanomaterials, yet their application in electronics is impeded by the low yield and random orientation of the resulting flakes. In this work, we developed a technique termed "scratching lithography", which enables in situ exfoliation and patterning of vdW layered materials for direct writing of functional circuits. Scratching lithography employs a pro

The sulcal patterns of the occipito-temporal and anterior cingulate cortices influence reading and writing in children and adults.

This study explores how the morphology of the left occipito-temporal sulcus and anterior cingulate cortex relates to reading and writing abilities. The occipito-temporal sulcus, which houses the visual word form area (VWFA), and the anterior cingulate cortex, involved in cognitive control, are key regions for literacy. Structural MRI scans from 38 children (aged 8 to 11) and 23 adults (aged 20 to 40) were analyzed to identify their sulcal patterns. Reading and writing (spelling and graphomotor) performance was assessed using standardized tests indexing both accuracy and speed. Structural equat

Writing in Elementary Students With Language-Based Learning Disabilities: A Pilot Study to Examine Feasibility and Promise.

PURPOSE: Although children with language-based learning disabilities (LLD) demonstrate significant difficulties with writing, empirical evidence to support interventions is sparse. Therefore, the purpose of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility and promise of a writing intervention for fourth- and fifth-grade students with LLD (WILLD: writing in students with LLD). The intervention components included word-, sentence-, and discourse-level writing processes and instructional practices using self-regulation strategies. METHOD: Participants for this study were 15 students with LLD, rec

Are Written Syntax Features Related to Writing Quality? An Examination of Spanish and English Compositions by Bilingual Children.

PURPOSE: There is limited research on the writing of young Spanish-English bilinguals and their writing in both languages. In the current study, we addressed whether written syntax features differed by language (English and Spanish) and varied as a function of grade level, English learner status, and instructional program (dual or English immersion). We also examined whether Spanish and English syntax features were related cross-linguistically and related to writing quality within languages and whether these relations to writing quality were moderated by grade level, English learner status, an

Using a digital spelling aid to improve writing in persons with post-stroke aphasia: An intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Intervention studies aimed to improve the written production of single words by persons with aphasia have yielded promising results and there is growing interest in interventions targeting text writing. The development of technical writing aids offers opportunities for persons with aphasia, and studies have shown that using them can have a positive impact on written output. AIMS: The aim was to investigate what impact training to use a computerised spell checker had on text writing in persons with aphasia. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The study had a multiple-baseline single-case experi

A universal reading network and its modulation by writing system and reading ability in French and Chinese children.

Are the brain mechanisms of reading acquisition similar across writing systems? And do similar brain anomalies underlie reading difficulties in alphabetic and ideographic reading systems? In a cross-cultural paradigm, we measured the fMRI responses to words, faces, and houses in 96 Chinese and French 10-year-old children, half of whom were struggling with reading. We observed a reading circuit which was strikingly similar across languages and consisting of the left fusiform gyrus, superior temporal gyrus/sulcus, precentral and middle frontal gyri. Activations in some of these areas were modula

Present and past: Can writing abilities in school children be associated with their auditory discrimination capacities in infancy?

Literacy acquisition is highly associated with auditory processing abilities, such as auditory discrimination. The event-related potential Mismatch Response (MMR) is an indicator for cortical auditory discrimination abilities and it has been found to be reduced in individuals with reading and writing impairments and also in infants at risk for these impairments. The goal of the present study was to analyze the relationship between auditory speech discrimination in infancy and writing abilities at school age within subjects, and to determine when auditory speech discrimination differences, rele
