Ongoing compound field potentials from octopus brain are labile and vertebrate-like.

Ongoing electrical activity was recorded from the brain of the virtually intact, semirestrained, unanesthetized octopus by semimicroelectrodes thrust through the cartilage into the optic, vertical or basal lobe. With flexible lead-in wires such electrodes were carried by and moved with the head without causing movement artifacts. Controls suggest that the activity reported comes from the brain; it is reversibly flattened by doses of urethane that do not embarrass respiration. Muscle potentials are only troublesome on occasion. Seen through a wideband filter, neuronal spikes are usually small o

Multi-omics profiling reveals associations between gut microbiota and olfactory gene expression in mosquitoes.

INTRODUCTION: The interplay between gut microbiota and host physiological processes has been extensively studied in vertebrates, where it plays a crucial role in regulating appetite, emotion, immunity, and other physiological functions. However, whether a similar regulatory mechanism exists in insects remains unclear, especially regarding the long-distance regulation of olfactory function. This study focused on three Culex subspecies (Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex pipiens pallens, and Culex pipiens molestus) that are closely related but exhibit significant differences in olfaction-dependent ec

Anthropogenic influences on Rhodnius ecuadoriensis populations and nesting behaviors in sylvatic areas of southern ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a major public health concern. While Rhodnius ecuadoriensis, a key vector, is traditionally sylvatic, environmental disturbances have driven its adaptation to human-influenced habitats. This study explores a novel factor: how anthropogenic waste affects vector ecology by altering nest compositions. Unlike prior research, this study examines whether human-derived materials in nests influence triatomine colonization. Given rising pollution, particularly post-COVID-19, understanding its role in disease transmission is e

Long-term noise exposures and cardiovascular diseases mortality: A study in 5 U.S. states.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have linked noise exposure with adverse cardiovascular events. However, evidence remains inconsistent, and most previous studies only focused on traffic noise, excluding other anthropogenic sources like constructions, industrial process and commercial activities. Additionally, few studies have been conducted in the U.S. or evaluated the non-linear exposure-response relationships. METHODS: We conducted a relative incidence analysis study using all cardiovascular diseases mortality as cases (n = 936,019) and external causes mortality (n = 232,491) as contrast outcom

Trypanosoma cruzi infection in Triatoma infestans and high levels of human-vector contact across a rural-to-urban gradient in the Argentine Chaco.

BACKGROUND: Peri-urban and urban settings have recently gained more prominence in studies on vector-borne transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi due to sustained rural-to-urban migrations and reports of urban infestations with triatomines. Prompted by the finding of Triatoma infestans across the rural-to-urban gradient in Avia Terai, an endemic municipality of the Argentine Chaco, we assessed selected components of domestic transmission risk in order to determine its variation across the gradient. METHODS: A baseline vector survey was conducted between October 2015 and March 2016, following which

An Integrated Molecular Approach to Untangling Host-Vector-Pathogen Interactions in Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) From Sylvan Communities in Mexico.

There are ~240 species of Culicidae in Mexico, of which some are vectors of arthropod-borne viruses such as Zika virus, dengue virus, chikungunya virus, and West Nile virus. Thus, the identification of mosquito feeding preferences is paramount to understanding of vector-host-pathogen interactions that, in turn, can aid the control of disease outbreaks. Typically, DNA and RNA are extracted separately for animal (insects and blood meal hosts) and viral identification, but this study demonstrates that multiple organisms can be analyzed from a single RNA extract. For the first time, residual DNA p

Deforestation: effects on vector-borne disease.

This review addresses changes in the ecology of vectors and epidemiology of vector-borne diseases which result from deforestation. Selected examples are considered from viral and parasitic infections (arboviruses, malaria, the leishmaniases, filariases, Chagas Disease and schistosomiasis) where disease patterns have been directly or indirectly influenced by loss of natural tropical forests. A wide range of activities have resulted in deforestation. These include colonisation and settlement, transmigrant programmes, logging, agricultural activities to provide for cash crops, mining, hydropower

Construction of Toxoplasma gondii SRS29C nucleic acid vaccine and comparative immunoprotective study of an SRS29C and SAG1 combination.

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoan parasite that infects all nucleated cells except the red blood cells. Currently, nucleic acid vaccines are being widely investigated in Toxoplasma gondii control, and several nucleic acid vaccine candidate antigens have shown good protection in various studies. The aim of this study was to construct a nucleic acid vaccine with Toxoplasma gondii SRS29C as the target gene. We explored the nucleic acid vaccine with Toxoplasma surface protein SRS29C and the combined gene of SRS29C and SAG1 and evaluated its immunoprotective effect against Toxoplasma

Microbiome modelling for post-mortem interval estimation across species and climates: swine analogues in a British summer and external validation in human donors from the USA.

Background Microbial clocks have shown high accuracy in estimating time since death, or post-mortem interval (PMI), across diverse contexts, including controlled laboratory settings, outdoor environments, and both human cadavers and animal models. However, the limited number of studies performed under different environmental and climatic conditions, particularly in Europe, restricts the broader applicability of these models, as data from distinct climates may not reliably translate across geographic regions. This study investigates the nasal thanatomicrobiome of pig carcasses exposed to outdoo

Cost of surviving sepsis: a novel model of recovery from sepsis in Drosophila melanogaster.

BACKGROUND: Multiple organ failure, wasting, increased morbidity, and mortality following acute illness complicates the health span of patients surviving sepsis. Persistent inflammation has been implicated, and it is proposed that insulin signaling contributes to persistent inflammatory signaling during the recovery phase after sepsis. However, mechanisms are unknown and suitable pre-clinical models are lacking. We therefore developed a novel Drosophila melanogaster model of sepsis to recapitulate the clinical course of sepsis, explored inflammation over time, and its relation to impaired mobi

Developing global climate anomalies suggest potential disease risks for 2006-2007.

BACKGROUND: El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) related climate anomalies have been shown to have an impact on infectious disease outbreaks. The Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA/CPC) has recently issued an unscheduled El Niño advisory, indicating that warmer than normal sea surface temperatures across the equatorial eastern Pacific may have pronounced impacts on global tropical precipitation patterns extending into the northern hemisphere particularly over North America. Building evidence of the links between ENSO driven climate anomalies a

Kinetics studies of the cardiac Ca-ATPase expressed in Sf21 cells: new insights on Ca-ATPase regulation by phospholamban.

Kinetics studies of the cardiac Ca-ATPase expressed in Sf21 cells (Spodoptera frugiperda insect cells) have been carried out to test the hypotheses that phospholamban inhibits Ca-ATPase cycling by decreasing the rate of the E1.Ca to E1'.Ca transition and/or the rate of phosphoenzyme hydrolysis. Three sample types were studied: Ca-ATPase expressed alone, Ca-ATPase coexpressed with wild-type phospholamban (the natural pentameric inhibitor), and Ca-ATPase coexpressed with the L37A-phospholamban mutant (a more potent monomeric inhibitor, in which Leu(37) is replaced by Ala). Phospholamban coupling

Bioaccumulative potential and toxicity of endosulfan insecticide to non-target animals.

1. Endosulfan insecticide is a polychlorinated compound used for controlling a variety of insects; it is practically water-insoluble, but readily adheres to clay particles and persists in soil and water for several years. Its mode of action involves repetitive nerve-discharges positively correlated to increase in temperature. This compound is extremely toxic to most fish and can cause massive mortalities. In fish, it causes marked changes in Na and K concentrations, decrease in blood Ca(2+) and Mg levels and inhibits Na, K and Mg-dependent ATPase (in brain). 2. Bioaccumulation of endosulfan is

Increase of Albinistic Hosts Caused by Gut Parasites Promotes Self-Transmission.

Paranosema locustae is a gut parasite that has been applied widely in the control of grasshoppers in many parts of the world. Usually, P. locustae is transmitted horizontally via passive modes under natural conditions but in the current study, a positive transmission strategy of P. locustae was demonstrated. First, infection by P. locustae resulted in the cuticula of infected Locusta migratoria nymphs to become lighter in color: normally only a small proportion of locusts are pale with most either being partly or mostly black; but locusts infected with P. locustae became pale. And it was found

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in a Saudi Arabian Soldier Stationed in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a common parasitic disease seen in many parts of the world, especially in areas where current U.S. and international forces are deployed. Approximately 350 million people are thought to be at risk of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) with an annual incidence of 1.5 million cases. Over 90% of cutaneous infections with Leishmania occur in the Middle East, Brazil, and Peru. Outbreaks of CL may occur in military personnel deployed to endemic areas. Since the incubation period for symptomatic CL ranges from weeks to months, symptoms may not appear until well after returning

The effects of strawberry cropping practices on the strawberry tortricid (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), its natural enemies, and the presence of nematodes.

Cropping practice can affect pests and natural enemies. A three-year study of the strawberry tortricid, Acleris comariana (Lienig and Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), its parasitoid Copidosoma aretas Walker (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), and its entomopathogenic fungi was conducted in seven pairs of organic and conventional farms to test the hypothesis that farming practice (organic versus conventional) will affect the level of pest infestation and will affect the natural enemies. In addition, the number of years with strawberries on the farm, field age, and other factors that may affect pests
