Treatment of a large postextraction buccal wall defect with mineralized allograft, β-TCP, and rhPDGF-BB: a growth factor-mediated bone regenerative approach.

Buccal wall defects following tooth removal are frequent in the anterior portions of the mandible and maxilla. Common reasons for such defects include thin buccal bone, preexisting periodontal disease, bundle bone resorption, difficult orthodontic movement, and traumatic extractions. Regeneration of the postextraction defect with vital, well-vascularized, dense bone is critical to a successful implant-supported restoration. This case report examines the effectiveness of using a composite graft of freeze-dried bone allograft and β-tricalcium phosphate plus recombinant human platelet-derived gro

Interdisciplinary treatment for a compensated Class II partially edentulous malocclusion: Orthodontic creation of a posterior implant site.

A 36-year-old woman with good periodontal health sought treatment for a compensated Class II partially edentulous malocclusion associated with a steep mandibular plane (SN-MP, 45°), 9 missing teeth, a 3-mm midline discrepancy, and compromised posterior occlusal function. She had multiple carious lesions, a failing fixed prostheses in the mandibular right quadrant replacing the right first molar, and a severely atrophic edentulous ridge in the area around the mandibular left first and second molars. After restoration of the caries, the mandibular left third molar served as anchorage to correct

Temporal changes in the distribution and number of macrophage-lineage cells in the periodontal membrane of the rat molar in response to experimental tooth movement.

In order to evaluate the possible role of macrophages in the remodelling of periodontal tissue in response to tooth movement, temporal changes in the number and distribution of macrophage-lineage cells in the periodontal membrane of the rat molar tooth after experimental tooth movement were examined immunohistochemically using four anti-rat monoclonal antibodies: ED1 (anti-monocyte/macrophage-lineage cells and dendritic cells), ED2 (anti-resident macrophages), KI-M2R (anti-tissue macrophages), and OX6 (anti-class II molecules). The right maxillary first molar tooth of Wistar rats was moved mes

Surgical removal versus retention for the management of asymptomatic impacted wisdom teeth.

BACKGROUND: The prophylactic removal of asymptomatic impacted wisdom teeth is defined as the (surgical) removal of wisdom teeth in the absence of local disease. Impacted wisdom teeth may be associated with pathological changes, such as inflammation of the gums around the tooth, root resorption, gum and alveolar bone disease, damage to the adjacent teeth and the development of cysts and tumours. Other reasons to justify prophylactic removal have been to prevent late incisor crowding. When surgical removal is carried out in older patients, following the development of symptoms, the risk of posto

Anterior intrusion mechanics for adult deep bite correction: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Deep bite, defined as excessive vertical overlap of the lower incisors, remains a challenging malocclusion in adults. The existing literature largely focuses on growing patients, with limited high-quality evidence on treatment outcomes in skeletally mature individuals. OBJECTIVES: To systematically evaluate randomised controlled trials (RCTs) assessing anterior intrusion mechanics for deep-bite correction in adults (≥ 18 years), focusing on measurable dentoalveolar outcomes, specifically the magnitude of overbite reduction, the extent of incisor intrusion, and treatment duration.

A new osteopetrosis mutant mouse strain (ntl) with odontoma-like proliferations and lack of tooth roots.

A new spontaneous mouse mutant (ntl) with autosomal-recessive osteopetrosis was characterized. These mice formed tartrate-resistant acid phosphate (TRAP)-positive osteoclasts but their osteoclasts had no ruffled border and did not resorb bone. These mice displayed no tooth eruption or tooth root formation. Adult mutant mice developed odontoma-like proliferations near the proximal ends of the incisors. Intraperitoneal injection of progenitor cells from the liver of 16.5 days postcoitum wild-type embryos into newborn mutants rescued the osteopetrosis phenotype, indicating that the defects were i

Platelet-rich plasma and resorbable membrane for prevention of periodontal defects after deeply impacted lower third molar extraction.

PURPOSE: The extraction of deeply included third molars may cause multiple periodontal defects at the distal root of the second molar. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a material containing autologous growth factors, which may be used in repairing and preventing periodontal complications at the distal root of the second molar adjacent to the extracted third molar. We have previously analyzed the effects of autologous PRP on periodontal tissues after extraction of the third molar in 18 young patients. In the current study, we investigated the clinical effects of a resorbable collagen membrane of p

Interdisciplinary Management of an Infected Dentigerous Cyst Associated with an Impacted Maxillary Canine: A Case Report with a 6-year Follow-up.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are the second most common type of odontogenic cysts, typically associated with impacted teeth, particularly maxillary canines and mandibular third molars. They often remain asymptomatic until they reach a significant size, leading to complications, such as cortical bone expansion, root resorption, and potential infections. The management of dentigerous cysts in pediatric patients requires a multidisciplinary approach involving surgical, orthodontic, and prosthetic rehabilitation strategies. Advanced imaging techniques, such as cone-beam computed tomograph

Comparative Evaluation of Frictional Resistance Between Different Types of Ceramic Brackets and Stainless Steel Brackets With Teflon-Coated Stainless Steel and Stainless Steel Archwires: An In-Vitro Study.

Background Orthodontic tooth movement relies on sliding mechanics usually achieved by sliding the archwire through brackets. Sliding causes friction which is a force resisting the relative motion of two contacting objects. Frictional resistance is undesirable in orthodontic tooth movement because the archwire might bind with the bracket and prevent tooth movement. In addition, friction causes bending of the archwire leading to unwanted tooth movement or space loss through anchorage interference, prolonging the treatment time and root resorption. This study was performed to compare the friction

Disparate effects of sclerostin deletion on alveolar bone and cellular cementum in mice.

BACKGROUND: Cellular cementum (CC) includes cementocytes, cells suspected to regulate CC formation or resorption as osteocytes do in bone. Sclerostin (SOST) is a secreted negative regulator of Wnt/β-catenin signaling expressed by osteocytes and cementocytes. Osteocyte SOST expression reduces bone formation. We investigated the functional importance of SOST in CC compared with alveolar bone (AB) using a Sost knockout (Sost-/-) mouse model to better understand the role of cementocytes in CC. METHODS: Mandibles and femurs of Sost-/- and wild-type (WT) mice were analyzed at 42 and 120 days postna
