Worm-free Holstein calves were used to assess the seasonal variation in numbers of nematode infective larvae on herbage at 2 commercial cow-calf ranches in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Both ranches used Herefords as their basic breed. One ranch near Sattley, California, is at an elevation of approximately 1,500 m above sea level, whereas the study area on the 2nd ranch near Susanville is at an elevation of approximately 1,250 m above sea level. Worm-free tracer calves were allowed to graze for approximately 30 days and were then kept free of further nematode infection until euthanasia and necr

Pure cultures of an isolate of Campylobacter fetus subspecies intestinalis obtained from the congested small intestinal mucosa of a two-week-old calf were used to infect three milk-fed calves and three ruminating calves in two separate controlled experiments. Inoculated animals all developed clinical signs which included fever (to 40 degrees C) and diarrhoea with excess clear mucus containing occasional spots of blood. C fetus subspecies intestinalis was isolated from the faeces of all infected animals in the two experiments but not from those of the five control animals. Changes in the enteri

The intestinal disappearance and simultaneous arterial inflow and portal appearance of individual amino acids (AA) were studied in sheep fed closed formula, unrefined high (H.P.) and medium (M.P.) protein diets. Gut contents were sampled through four intestinal cannulae and blood was sampled through portal and arterial catheters. The amount of total and amino N that was fed decreased on passage into the duodenum but increased in the jejunum, and then again decreased steadily towards the terminal ileum. The amounts of AA passing into the duodenum were significantly higher when the H.P. rather t

BACKGROUND: The omasum absorb water, electrolytes, volatile fatty acids by regulating the flow of digesta from the reticulum to the abomasum. In the Jammu region, small ruminants are raised under various agro-climatic conditions. Sheep mainly graze, while goats primarily browse. Such differences in feeding habits influences anatomy of digestive tract, especially the omasum. Studying omasum structure helps explain differences in digestive efficiency, nutrient utilization, and environmental adaptation among these species.
AIMS: The present study aimed to compare anatomy of omasum in Bakerwali g

Haemonchosis is a fatal disease of livestock caused by Haemonchus contortus (HC) - a blood-sucking parasite of the abomasum. This parasite is quite prevalent in sheep, causing mortality and production losses. The suppressor of cytokine signalling-2 (SOCS2) gene plays a vital role in sheep's immune response against gastrointestinal parasites. This study aimed to estimate the parasitic load of HC in three sheep breeds (Balkhi, Ghalji, and Michni) through faecal egg count and to identify SNPs in the SOCS2 gene associated with the susceptibility of sheep against HC. The results showed that the mea

Haemonchus contortus is a globally significant parasitic nematode in ruminants, with widespread resistance to benzimidazole due to its excessive and prolonged use. Given the extensive use of benzimidazole anthelmintics in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we hypothesized that resistance is prevalent. The aim of this study was to identify the presence of anthelmintic resistance to benzimidazole in H. contortus from naturally infected sheep, goats and cattle in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the detection of the Phe/Tyr polymorphism in the amino acid at position 200 of the β-tubulin protein. The unique structure of the stomach, including the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, indicates the differences between the ruminant and monogastric animals in the digestion of nutrients. This difference is reflected in the majority of dietary nutrients that may be fermented in the rumen. Significant proteins and a certain amount of starch can flow to the small intestine apart from rumen. The initial phase of small intestinal digestion requires pancreatic digestive enzymes. In theory, the enzymatic digestion and utilization efficiency of starch in the small intestine are considerably high

Parasitic infections have a negative impact on the fecundity and survival of wild ruminants, particularly moose; however, despite being more susceptible to parasitic diseases than other wild cervids, they remain poorly examined in this regard. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify gastrointestinal and liver helminth species of the moose population in central Europe, assess the factors contributing to infection intensities and examine their impact on moose health. Abomasum, small intestine, caecum and liver samples were collected from 46 moose in Poland and evaluated for helmi

Theileriosis is an economically important hemoprotozoal disease with high morbidity and mortality in cattle. The present study reported the pathological features of a natural outbreak of tropical bovine theileriosis due to Theileria annulata in Fars Province, southern Iran. T. annulata was confirmed by the presence of T. annulata piroplasms in the blood smears and also by polymerase chain reaction test. On necropsy, pale mucous membranes and petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages in the mucosal and serosal surfaces together with lymphadenopathy were observed. The liver was friable, yellowish, an

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated in living organisms under physiological and pathological conditions. They have to be neutralized by the antioxidative system which consists of enzymatic and non enzymatic antioxidants. Both, the activity of antioxidative enzymes and the capacity of non enzymatic antioxidants are known as the antioxidative status of the organism. If the balance between prooxidative processes and antioxidative system is disturbed oxidative stress occurs. Oxidative stress is considered to be a major risk factor for the reduction of defence mechanisms and development of

Continuous culture of Anaplasma marginale in endothelial cells and the potential implications for vaccine development heightened interest in determining the importance of endothelial cells in the A. marginale life cycle. A. marginale-infection trials were performed to determine if endothelial cells are an in vivo host cell in cattle and if A. marginale from in vitro endothelial cells were infective to cattle. Adult, immunocompetent steers were infected by tick-feeding transmission and were euthanized at different points in the parasitemic cycle. Based on quantitative PCR, the tissue distributi

The central nervous system undertakes the homeostatic role of sensing nutrient intake and body reserves, integrating the information, and regulating energy intake and/or energy expenditure. Few tasks regulated by the brain hold greater survival value, particularly important in farmed ruminant species, where the demands of pregnancy, lactation and/or growth are not easily met by often bulky plant-based and sometimes nutrient-sparse diets. Information regarding metabolic state can be transmitted to the appetite control centres of the brain by a diverse array of signals, such as stimulation of th

This study examines the association of pre-surgical clinical parameters in cows with left displacement of the abomasum (LDA) with the probability of cure. Data from 466 cases of LDA in which omentopexy was performed were analysed. Cows were classified in three categories according to the outcome of treatment. Cows in the first category were cured, i.e. sent back to the farm for further milk production. Cows in the second category were sent for slaughter because of an unfavourable prognosis concerning productivity. Cows in the third category either died or were salvaged because of poor prognosi

A prospective field study involving 251 Holstein cows and heifers from five dairy farms near Guelph, Ontario, Canada, was conducted to measure the effect of monensin delivered in a controlled release capsule 3 wk precalving on metabolic function in dairy cows immediately pre- and postcalving. At 3 wk before expected calving, cows were randomly assigned to receive either a controlled release capsule containing monensin or to serve as negative controls. Cows were blood sampled once per week precalving and once in the week following calving, at the same time of day and the same day of the week. S

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether temporal changes in polyamine concentration and synthesis could be found in the luminal content and wall tissue of the rumen and abomasum, two organs which have entirely different growth patterns during the first month of life. In the abomasal mucosa there was a marked gradual decrease in the ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity during the first month of life, while the ODC activity in the ruminal mucosa was low during the whole experimental period. However, injury of the rumen wall was followed by increased ODC activity. The ODC activi

A procedure allowing digesta sampling from the omasum via a ruminal cannula without repeated entry into the omasum was developed. The sampling system consisted of a device inserted into the omasum via the ruminal cannula, a tube connecting the device to the ruminal cannula, and a single compressor/vacuum pump. Eight cows given ad libitum access to a total mixed diet were used in a crossover design to evaluate the effects of the sampling system on digestive activity, animal performance, and animal behavior. Results indicated that the omasal sampling system has minimal effect on normal digestive

Pure cultures of Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni of bovine origin were used to inoculate three ruminating calves in each of two experiments and three milk-fed calves in another. Inoculated animals all developed clinical signs which included fewer (to 41 degrees C), diarrhoea and sporadic dysentery within one to three days of inoculation. Diarrhoeic faeces were dark, mucoid, of uniform consistency and were passed for six to 15 days. The eight control animals did not develop this syndrome. C f subspecies jejuni was isolated from the faeces of all nine inoculated animals and from the faeces

This study aimed to cross-sectionally investigate the prevalence of cows with higher non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentrations and related blood profiles during the dry period, and to evaluate associations between elevated NEFA levels and farm management. Blood samples were collected once from 601 Holstein cows (47 farms) between September 2021 and July 2024, on the day 21-2 before calving, with no disease records within 1 week before sampling. Serum concentrations of NEFA and other metabolites were measured and rumen fill score (RFS; range:1-5) were assessed concurrently. The proportio

Omphalocele is an embryonic developmental error presented as a neonatal visceral umbilical herniation. Epidemiological and embryological studies are reviewed that revise our understanding of midgut development and defects in cattle. Google Scholar and PubMed were searched for omphalocele, exomphalos, calves, calf, cattle, epidemiology, genetics, disease presentation, and omphalocele treatments of bovine neonates. Omphalocele contains small intestine and sometimes liver and/or pyloric abomasum. This condition may arise from inadequately expanded abdominal cavity, herniated midgut entrapment, or
