To assess SARS-CoV-2 reinfection incidence in the post-vaccination period, we carried out a prospective cohort study of blood donors from Amazonas and Sao Paulo States, Brazil. Anti-nucleocapsid immunoglobulin (IgG anti-N) tests carried out by blood centers in 2020 were used to identify previous SARS-CoV-2 infections in blood donors and divide them into two groups: prior infection (n=386) and no prior infection (n=111). From March 2021 to January 2022, donors were followed up for six months, during which IgG anti-N and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction tests were perfor

BACKGROUND: Sand flies of the species Nyssomyia umbratilis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) are vectors of the parasite Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis, one of the etiological agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Amazon region. In addition, Ny. umbratilis is a cryptic species, with populations showing differences in their ability to transmit the parasite. For instance, populations of Ny. umbratilis from the Manacapuru municipality (MAN), located on the south bank of the Negro river, in the Amazonas state of Brazil, shows refractoriness to Leishmania infection, while populations from R

Brazil was heavily affected by COVID-19 both with death toll and economically, with absence of a centralized Federal Government response. Tuberculosis (TB) notifications decreased in 2020 but partial recovery was observed in 2021. We have previously shown a sharp (93%) reduction in TB preventive treatment notifications among five Brazilian cities with more than 1,000 notifications in 2021. We hypothesized TB preventive treatment would also recover. We updated the previous analysis by adding other cities that hold more than a 1,000 notifications until 2022. Data aggregated by 2-week periods wer

In 2021, the 88th General Session of the World Assembly of National Delegates to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) recognized the estates of Acre, Paraná, the Rio Grande do Sul, and Rondônia as being free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) without vaccination. The certification was also extended to some cities in Amazonas and Mato Grosso. The new national strategic plan for 2026, which focuses on creating and maintaining sustainable conditions to expand FMD-free zones without vaccination, imposes new challenges and requires continuous evaluation of the FMD surveillance system. American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) may present different clinical manifestations, immune and therapeutic responses, depending on the Leishmania species, as well as inoculum size and factors inherent to the affected individual. Thus, the aim of this study was to carry out clinical-therapeutic follow-up of Brazilian patients with ACL caused by different Leishmania species. Between 2015 and 2018, patients with ACL from Amazonas and Pernambuco states (Brazil) were submitted to blood collection before and after treatment. The qPCR technique was used to quantify the parasite load. To identify th

BACKGROUND: The emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases are a cause for worldwide concern. The introduction of Zika and Chikungunya diseases in the Americas has exposed unforeseen medical and logistical challenges for public health systems. Moreover, the lack of preventive measures and vaccination against known and emerging mosquito-transmitted pathogens, and the occurrence of unanticipated clinical complications, has had an enormous social and economic impact on the affected populations. In this study, we aimed to measure the seroprevalence of endemic and emerging viral pathogens in

The Amazon region or regional Amazon complex includes nine states of Brazil with an area of around 5.1 million km, which is almost 60% of the country's territory. The sanitary conditions in this region are reflected by illness resulting from substandard living conditions and limited access to prevention measures and health care, in addition to the epidemiological profile of cryptococcosis. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the literature on cryptococcosis in the Amazon region and its future prospects. Thus, the present study searched the Scientific Electronic Library Onlin

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are vectors of Leishmania species, the etiological agents of leishmaniasis, which is one of the most important emerging infectious diseases in the Americas. In the state of Amazonas in Brazil, anthropogenic activities encourage the presence of these insects around rural homes. The present study aimed to describe the composition and distribution of sand fly species diversity among the ecotopes (intradomicile, peridomicile and forest) in an area of American cutaneous leishmaniasis transmission and detect natural infection with Leishmania

BACKGROUND: Confidential unit exclusion (CUE) was introduced in the 1980's as an additional layer to blood safety, before highly specific and sensitive nucleic acid tests (NAT) for HIV were implemented. The utility of CUE-use in settings that have implemented NAT should be evaluated over time.
STUDY DESIGN, METHODS: Cross-sectional retrospective study carried out from June 2010-November 2015, at Manaus Hemocenter (HEMOAM), Amazonas, Brazil that implemented HIV-NAT in 2012. The HIV, HCV, HBV, HTLV, Chagas disease, and syphilis rates were compared among CUE and non-CUE blood donors, before and

Lutzomyia umbratilis is the main vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania guyanensis in northern South America. It has been found naturally infected with this species of Leishmania only east of the Rio Negro and north of the Rio Amazonas. However, populations of this sand fly species are also present in areas south of the Amazon river system, which may act as a geographical barrier to the Leishmania guyanensis cycle. With the aim of looking for possible biological differences between populations of L. umbratilis from each side of this river system, their biology in the laboratory wa

An outbreak of psittacosis in a veterinary teaching hospital was recognized in December 2004. Outbreak management was instituted to evaluate the extent of the outbreak and to determine the avian source. Real-time PCR, serologic testing and sequencing of the ompA gene of Chlamydophila psittaci were performed. Sputum samples from patients, throat-swab samples from exposed students and staff, and faecal specimens from parrots and pigeons were tested. In this outbreak, 34 % (10/29) of the tested individuals were infected. The clinical features of the infection ranged from none to sepsis with multi

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to pose a significant public health threat in northern Brazil. Current control strategies for Anopheles darlingi, the primary malaria vector in the Amazon region, depend on long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) with pyrethroid insecticides. Despite decades of insecticide use, there are very few records of pyrethroid resistance in this mosquito species in Brazil, likely due to a lack of investigations, underscoring the urgent need for further actions.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the susceptibility of An. darlingi from all malaria-ende

Previous studies have reported high diversity between and within populations of Toxoplasma gondii in South America. In the present study, isolates of T. gondii from chickens were obtained from the Amazon region. Adult free-range chickens were acquired from 29 municipalities in the Brazilian Amazon region that included Acre (n = 9 municipalities), Amapá (n = 6), Amazonas (n = 6), Pará (n = 6), and Roraima (n = 2) states and from two municipalities in Peru, three in Bolivia, one in Guyana, and one in Venezuela. Heart, brain, and blood samples were collected from 401 chickens. Anti-T. gondii seru

Following the successful eradication of Wuchereria bancrofti, there are now just three species of conventional microfilaremic human filarial parasites endemic to the Brazilian Amazon region: Mansonella ozzardi, Mansonella perstans and Onchocerca volvulus. The zoonotic filarial parasite Dirofilaria immitis is also found in the Amazon region as are several sylvatic filarial parasites, some of which have been recorded causing zoonoses and some of which have never been recorded outside the region. Onchocerca volvulus is only found in the Amazonia onchocerciasis focus in the Brazilian state of Rora

BACKGROUND: Leishmania guyanensis-associated cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in the Brazilian Amazonas. Despite similar exposure to the pathogen in endemic areas, only a subset of individuals develops disease, suggesting host-genetic control. STAT4 triggers interleukin 12 (IL-12)-dependent Th1 differentiation and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) production, essential for macrophage-mediated parasite clearance.
METHODS: We performed a case-control study of 802 patients with L. guyanensis CL and 842 endemic controls (ECs). Eleven STAT4 variants (10 SNVs and 1 insertion/deletion) were genotyped. Ass

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains endemic in Peru, particularly in the Amazonas Region, with the highest burden reported in the Río Santiago District, Condorcanqui Province. As part of ongoing malaria elimination efforts, special attention must be given to submicroscopic infections, which may serve as silent reservoirs that sustain transmission. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of submicroscopic malaria infections and to identify the sociodemographic and clinical-epidemiological factors associated with these infections in the indigenous communities of Río Santiago.
METHODS: A cross-sect

BACKGROUND: The northern Brazilian state of Roraima has recently experienced an increase in malaria cases, mainly caused by illegal mining activities on indigenous lands. These activities mainly affect the Yanomami Indigenous people, whose territory accounts for nearly 30% of Roraima. In January 2023, the severity of the malaria outbreak led to a Public Health Emergency declaration in the Yanomami Indigenous Land (YIL) and prompted government intervention. This study examines malaria trends before and after the 2023 federal government's response in the YIL.
METHODS: A descriptive retrospectiv
