Oral disorders of exotic ungulates.

There are many species classified as ungulates that possess a large variety of dental formulae and dental adaptations. Despite the diversity found within the ungulate group, the list of dental abnormalities remains short. Regardless of the contributing factors, cases of aveolitis accompanied by osteomyelitis ("lumpy jaw") occur more frequently than some of the other dental problems that are encountered in these species (fractures of tusks/canines, malocclusion, eruption cysts). Commonly, treatment of "lumpy jaw" requires exodontia with additional antibiotic therapy using a drug that is appropr

Fungal diseases of reptiles.

Fungal infections affecting the integumentary system, the upper and lower respiratory system and the gastro-intestinal tract have been reported in many species of captive reptiles. Systemic mycoses are diagnosed rarely in reptiles, and in most cases, they are a postmortem finding. Commonly, immunocompromised reptiles, kept in suboptimal environmental conditions are affected. In many cases, mixed bacterial and fungal infections of opportunistic organisms may be present. A diagnosis of a primary fungal infection is based on proper selection and collection of diagnostic specimens such as biopsies

Ocular biology and diseases of Old World chameleons.

For centuries, Old World chameleons (Chamaeleonidae family) have been collected and studied for their unusual biology and features, which are unique among lizards and other vertebrates. They have advanced mechanisms for capturing prey with their tongue, but have a primitive mechanism for hearing. Chameleons have the most studied ocular system because of their highly adapted yet primitive biology. This system has specific features that are susceptible to new diseases, which may require novel therapies.

Feather picking and self-mutilation in psittacine birds.

Feather-picking and self-mutilation behaviors are common in psittacine birds. These behaviors are best defined as stereotypic behaviors or obsessive compulsive disorders. There is likely a genetic predisposition for these behaviors as reflected in the overrepresentation of a number of species of psittacines. Stereotypies most often result from a high level of arousal and the inability to respond with the appropriate natural behaviors. More specifically, conflict may be induced by the absence of releasing stimuli or target objects. On a chemical level, stereotypic behavior appears to be related

Crocodilian anesthesia.

With declining crocodilian populations worldwide, a greater interest in the conservation of these animals in the wild and in captivity is ongoing. This effort has created a demand for safe and effective ways to handle and immobilize crocodiles for transport and relocation. With the advent of new anesthetic protocols, working with crocodilians has now been made safer for both the animal and the handler. Unfortunately, current anesthetic protocols have been limited to a few species and further application of these protocols need to be undertaken with new species.

Ferret respiratory diseases.

Ferret behavior often brings them into close contact with potential respiratory pathogens and traumatic insults. Although respiratory disease accounts for a small percentage of cases, they are usually dramatic. Acute and chronic conditions occur, and many lesions are confined to the upper or lower respiratory tree but may not involve both. Pathogens such as influenza A account for a large percentage of upper respiratory infections and often mirror the "flu" season of humans. Traumatic insults to the head and chest are relatively common and account for many veterinary visits. Numerous diseases

Respiratory diseases, diagnostics, and treatment of marsupials.

Primary respiratory disease is uncommon in marsupials, but generalized disease often involves the respiratory tract in these animals. Other disease entities may spread to involve the respiratory system secondarily. Treatment is challenging because most animals are severely compromised on presentation. Bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi and yeasts, trauma, and neoplasia all can affect the respiratory systems of marsupials. Some of these conditions are only incidental findings, whereas others are pathogenic. Many therapies and diagnostic procedures are extrapolated from those in companion anima

Respiratory diseases of rabbits.

Respiratory diseases are second only to gastroenteric diseases in importance in rabbits. Pasteurellosis is the primary respiratory disease affecting domestic rabbits, but other bacteria (e.g., Bordetella broniseptica and Staphylococcus spp) are significant opportunistic pathogens. The primary manifestations are upper respiratory disease (e.g., rhinitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, and dacryocystitis). Various antimicrobials are effective for treatment.

Ferrets. Clinical pathology and sample collection.

Diagnostic sampling and interpretation in the ferret are similar to other small mammals in many ways. There are several aspects of clinical pathology and diagnostic procedures, however, that are unique to the ferret. This article is designed to assist the clinician in obtaining and interpreting diagnostic samples for the ferret. Methods for blood and urine collection, bone marrow and organ aspirations, and organ biopsy techniques are discussed.

Observations of basic diagnostic profile patterns seen in some common disorders of backyard poultry species.

Poultry species--chickens, ducks, geese--are becoming increasingly popular as pets. As such, requests for accurate diagnoses and treatment are being received by the veterinary community from the public. Unlike the food animal and production-oriented aspects of poultry medicine, success with these pet birds is contingent on preserving the human-pet bird bond, as defined by the individual client. This article presents some of this author's observations in diagnostic profiles on some selected disorders of backyard poultry.

Thoracic Surgery in Small Mammals.

Advances in imaging, anesthesia, and surgical techniques have made thoracic surgery in small mammals clinically feasible, yet it remains challenging due to their small size, unique physiology, and the anatomic complexity of the thorax. Improvements in computed tomography, endoscopy, and perioperative care now allow safer and more precise diagnosis and treatment. Consequently, procedures such as midline thoracotomies for thymomas, pulmonary lobectomies, thoracoscopy, and even more specialized interventions like pacemaker implantation are now performed with increasing reliability. Nevertheless,

Ocular Surgery in Small Mammals.

Small mammal ocular surgery requires knowledge on species-specific anatomic challenges that demand refined microsurgical skills. Rabbits frequently require surgical treatment of nasolacrimal obstruction, Harderian gland prolapse, corneal ulcers, and cataracts, with phacoemulsification offering good outcomes for the later. Hystricomorph rodents often present with dental-related retrobulbar abscesses, nonhealing corneal ulcers, or cataracts requiring enucleation. Ferrets commonly undergo surgical management of conjunctival lesions, cataracts, and orbital masses. In rats, mice, and hamsters, glob

Macrodont Teeth in Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus).

Macrodontia in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) is a dental anomaly characterized by abnormal tooth enlargement and structural alterations that bear resemblance to odontoma. This review synthesizes current literature regarding the morphologic, histologic, and radiological aspects of the condition. Detailed examinations reveal that macrodontic changes affect both the crown and pulp, often leading to malocclusion, impaired mastication, and the formation of sharp edges on the tooth surface that irritate the oral mucosa. Overall, the complex presentation of macrodontia in guinea pigs underscores the

Gastroenterology in Rodents.

Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases are frequently diagnosed in rodents. Clinical signs are usually nonspecific and include anorexia, weight loss, chronic wasting, abdominal discomfort, gas accumulation in the intestine and stomach, and diarrhea. Malabsorption associated with GI dysfunction or gastroenteritis quickly leads to negative energy balance and metabolic acidosis. Therefore, all disorders of the GI tract should be treated as soon as possible. The article describes selected disorders of the GI tract in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), degus (Octodon degus),

Oral Cavity Disorders in Reptiles.

Reptilian dentition is diverse, categorized into homodont and heterodont types based on tooth shape and function. Certain reptiles have evolved unique teeth for specific diets, such as iguanas' peg-like teeth for grinding plants and venomous snakes' fangs for injecting venom. The attachment of teeth varies: acrodont and pleurodont teeth are fused to the jaw, while thecodont teeth are embedded in sockets. Oral examinations reveal conditions like stomatitis, abscesses, or foreign bodies caused by bacterial infections. Diagnosis involves clinical and laboratory assessments, while treatment involv
