Kids are not just small adults: An attempt to validate pediatric tablet-based digits in noise testing.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate whether conductive hearing loss (CHL) can be differentiated from sensorineural hearing loss in children ages 3-18 using a diotic and antiphasic digits-in-noise (DIN) tablet-based test using existing adult cut-off criteria. METHODS: A blinded multi-institutional prospective cohort of 64 children aged 3-18 scheduled for an audiometric soundbooth evaluation with a pediatric audiologist and a same-day otolaryngologist examination were recruited for the study. Following a conventional audiogram, the subjects underwent diotic (same-phased sti

Candidacy for Cochlear implantation: Validating a novel Cochlear implant candidacy calculator against gold-standard, in-clinic audiometric assessments.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants (CI) are reliable implantable devices that are highly cost-effective in reducing the burden of hearing loss at an individual and societal scale. However, only 10% of CI candidates are aware of their candidacy and receive a CI. A web-based screening tool to assess CI candidacy may make many more individuals aware of their candidacy for cochlear implantation. The objective of this study was to validate and optimize the online Cochlear Implant Candidacy Calculator against in-clinic audiometric testing. METHODS: Audiogram data and word discrimination scores for 132 p

Long QT and Hearing Loss in High-Risk Infants Prospective Study Registry.

The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of an abnormal electrocardiogram showing a prolonged QTc greater than 450 ms in infants with unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. We conducted a prospective study of healthy term infants (≥37 weeks gestational age) who failed their newborn auditory brainstem response hearing screen, were seen by an audiologist and diagnosed as having sensorineural hearing loss during follow-up to 1 year of age. In infants with a diagnosis of hearing loss, we collected a detailed family history and performed an ECG between 2 and 6 months

A Preliminary Analysis of Tympanometric Parameters in a Local Multiethnic Population.

Background: Tympanometry is a routine clinical test ordered at the Department of Otolaryngology, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) at Changi General Hospital (CGH). In combination with the pure tone audiogram, tympanograms aid in the diagnostic value of various middle ear disorders. However, its diagnostic value depends on the physician and audiologist's accuracy of classifying and interpreting the tympanograms. Presently, Caucasian normative values are used in the classification of tympanograms, which could be inaccurate without population specific norms. Therefore, there is a need to understand eth

Symptoms, Audiometric and Vestibular Laboratory Findings, and Imaging in a Concurrent Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome and Vestibular Schwannoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Dizziness is a common complaint that can arise from multiple systems in the body. Objective vestibular tests are used to understand the underlying function of the vestibular system and whether or not it may be contributing to the dizziness symptoms experienced by the patient. Even when comprehensive case history is consistent with an otologic etiology, audiometric and vestibular tests are ordered to objectively characterize inner ear function to help further refine the differential diagnoses and aid in guiding treatment options. Few reports in the literature describe audiometric an

Hearing Loss in Adults: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment.

More than 30 million U.S. adults have hearing loss. This condition is underrecognized, and hearing aids and other hearing enhancement technologies are underused. Hearing loss is categorized as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. Age-related sensorineural hearing loss (i.e., presbycusis) is the most common type in adults. Several approaches can be used to screen for hearing loss, but the benefits of screening are uncertain. Patients may present with self-recognized hearing loss, or family members may observe behaviors (e.g., difficulty understanding conversations, increasing television volume)

Chronic Auditory Toxicity in Late Preterm and Term Infants With Significant Hyperbilirubinemia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Significant hyperbilirubinemia (SHB) may cause chronic auditory toxicity (auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder and/or sensorineural hearing loss); however, total serum bilirubin (TSB) does not discriminate neonates at risk for auditory toxicity. Our objective was to compare TSB, bilirubin albumin molar ratio (BAMR), and unbound bilirubin (UB) for their association with chronic auditory toxicity in neonates with SHB (TSB ≥20 mg/dL or TSB that met criteria for exchange transfusion). METHODS: Infants ≥34 weeks' gestational age (GA) with SHB during the first 2 postnata

Risk of hearing impairment in pediatric liver transplant recipients: a single center study.

As survival rates following liver transplantation have increased, health care providers must assess the impact of transplantation on dimensions other than traditional medical measures. Hearing impairment may adversely impact social, emotional, cognitive, academic, and speech and language development. We hypothesized that children who undergo liver transplantation are at risk for hearing impairment due to exposure to ototoxic drugs. We conducted a review of 74 children who had undergone liver transplantation between December 1996 and September 2000 at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Cent

SENSE-Cog Residential Care: hearing and vision support for residents with dementia in long-term care in Ireland-protocol for a pilot cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hearing and vision loss is highly prevalent in residents with dementia (RwD) living in long-term care (LTC) facilities. Sensory loss often has a negative impact on quality of life and other dementia-related outcomes. Optimising sensory function may improve dementia-related outcomes in LTC facilities. The SENSE-Cog Residential Care pilot trial will evaluate whether a multi-faceted hearing and vision intervention for RwD and concurrent sensory loss is suitable for definitive testing in a large-scale cluster-randomised control trial (RCT) in Ireland and how this can best be achieved.

The Otoacoustic Emissions in the Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening: An Update on Selected Asian States (2005 to 2025).

Background: Although significant progress has been made in Neonatal Hearing Screening (NHS) over the past two decades, the available data on Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening (UNHS) practices across Asia remain limited. The aim of this scoping review was therefore twofold: (a) to identify and synthesize the most recent literature (within the past 20 years) concerning NHS/UNHS programs in Asian states, and (b) to summarize evidence on screening procedures, the intervention strategies, and the estimated prevalence of congenital hearing loss (HL), with particular attention to cases of bilatera

Diagnosis, management and treatment of the Alport syndrome - 2024 guideline on behalf of ERKNet, ERA and ESPN.

Glomerular nephropathy resulting from the genetic defects in COL4A3/4/5 genes including the classical Alport syndrome is the second most common hereditary kidney disease characterized by persistent haematuria progressing to the need for kidney replacement therapy, frequently associated with sensorineural deafness, and occasionally with ocular anomalies. Diagnosis and management of COL4A3/4/5 glomerulopathy is a great challenge due to its phenotypic heterogeneity, multiple modes of inheritance, variable expressivity, and disease penetrance of individual variants as well as imperfect prognostic

Early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) programmes for infants and young children in low-income and middle-income countries in Asia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) measures initiated in high-income countries (HICs) were attempted in low-income and middle-income countries (L&MICs). However, information regarding the models of EHDI, context-specific adaptations made to strategies and outcomes are not known. AIMS: The aims of this systematic review were to identify the various models of EHDI used in Asian L&MICs in the published scientific literature and to describe their efficacy and validity. METHODS: The studies were eligible if the programme was from Asian L&MICs, implemented for children bel

Prevalence and risk factors for ototoxicity after cisplatin-based chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Ototoxicity is a prominent side effect of cisplatin-based chemotherapy. There are few reports, however, estimating its prevalence in well-defined cohorts and associated risk factors. METHODS: Testicular cancer (TC) survivors given first-line cisplatin-based chemotherapy completed validated questionnaires. Descriptive statistics evaluated the prevalence of ototoxicity, defined as self-reported hearing loss and/or tinnitus. We compared patients with and without tinnitus or hearing loss using Chi-square test, two-sided Fisher's exact test, or two-sided Wilcoxon rank sum test. To evaluat

A Qualitative Study of Veterans' Perspectives on Tinnitus: An Invisible Wound.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is highly prevalent among U.S. military Veterans, yet referral to, and use of, tinnitus rehabilitation services to improve quality of life and functional status with tinnitus is low. Veterans with tinnitus often have other health issues that overlap or exacerbate the impact of tinnitus, potentially complicating referral and rehabilitative pathways. This qualitative study explores views on the daily impacts of tinnitus and experiences with tinnitus-related health care among Veterans. The goal of this research is to amplify the voices of Veterans regarding their experiences wit

Study Protocol: Type 1 Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Trial of a Behavioral Parent Training Intervention for Parents of Young Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and who use hearing aids or cochlear implants are more likely than their peers with typical hearing to exhibit behavior problems. Although multiple evidence-based interventions for child behavior problems exist, they are rarely delivered to children who are DHH, and no rigorous randomized controlled trials have been conducted to determine their effects with this population. This protocol describes a study aiming to test the effectiveness of an evidence-based behavioral parent training intervention adapted for parents of young children who
