Cochlear implantations in visually impaired patients.

We retrospectively review the cases to evaluate the outcome of cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss and visual impairment (VI). Six adults with severe or profound hearing loss and significant VI underwent multichannel CI. Follow-up period ranged from 17 months to 7 years. Case history, etiology of visual and hearing loss, and benefit from CI were evaluated. To measure the outcomes, we selected the pure-tone thresholds with CI, the speech discrimination scores (SDS) using the Japanese video SDS system, the speech perception rates using the Japanese CD SDS

Longitudinal Evaluation of Neurological and Sensory Changes in Gaucher Disease: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study (SENOPRO).

Background: Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the GBA1 gene. Traditionally, GD is classified into three subtypes based on the severity of neurological involvement; however, overlapping clinical features increasingly suggest a continuum of phenotypes rather than distinct categories. In this prospective observational cohort study, we conducted a multidisciplinary assessment of patients with GD to identify and monitor neurological, cognitive, auditory, and visual impairments. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive clinical and instrumental evaluation

Variable expression of albinism within a single kindred.

We studied the albinotic characteristics in 13 members of a white family (age range, 2 to 73 years), which were graded according to severity and were correlated with visual acuity. Clinical, electrophysiologic, and biochemical characteristics of this family do not fit any known category of human albinism. The degree of heterogeneity in expression of albinotic features was unexpected. The correlation between visual acuity and nystagmus was particularly strong. The brown-haired propositus had severe skin involvement, iris transillumination, fundus hypopigmentation, and foveal hypoplasia. He had

Prenatal Tobacco Exposure and Childhood Neurodevelopment among Infants Born Prematurely.

OBJECTIVE: Nicotine is an established neuroteratogen, and prenatal tobacco exposure alters the structure of the developing nervous system. An association between prenatal tobacco exposure and impaired neurologic function is less well established. We examine the association between prenatal tobacco exposure and childhood neurodevelopment among infants born preterm. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized controlled trial assessing the benefits of magnesium sulfate for the prevention of cerebral palsy in preterm infants. Women were included if they delivered a singleton and

Endolymphatic subarachnoid shunt operation for idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops.

In 1974 we reported on 92 patients who had endolymphatic subarachnoid shunt surgery for idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops. That group had a follow-up of at least 5 years, and only 41% had satisfactory control of vertigo. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results after a larger postoperative follow-up (12 1/2 years, with a range of 68 to 182 months), and to discuss some additional observations regarding endolymphatic sac operations. Two patients have died of unrelated causes, one in the 115th postoperative month and the other in the 124th postoperative month. Eight patients have been

Disease-specificity in correlations between speech audiometry, hearing-related quality of life, and varying calculation methods for pure tone average in middle ear diseases.

PURPOSE: This study examined whether different methods for calculating pure tone average (PTA) yield clinically relevant differences in correlations with speech audiometry and hearing-related quality of life (QoL) in conductive and mixed hearing loss. Additionally, we investigated whether these associations vary among distinct middle ear pathologies: otosclerosis, acute otitis media (AOM) and chronic otitis media (COM). METHODS: In an ambispective cohort study at a tertiary referral center, 220 ears were analyzed. 194 ears were collected retrospectively. 26 patients were recruited prospective

Recovery Patterns During Extended Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Combined With Steroids in Severe Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Multi-Center Study.

INTRODUCTION: Severe sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a challenging otological emergency. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) treatment is an adjunctive treatment for SSNHL, improving oxygen supply and microcirculation and reducing oxidative stress. While HBO₂ is increasingly used for SSNHL, the temporal patterns of hearing recovery during extended treatment protocols remain poorly characterized. This study investigates the frequency-specific recovery patterns and speech recognition improvements during a 30-session HBO₂ protocol with concurrent steroid treatment in patients with severe SSNHL.

Polygenic risk score analysis of noise-induced hearing loss: An integrated cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Substantial variability in susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) with comparable noise exposures suggests a genetic contribution, but population-based evidence remains limited. This study evaluated whether a polygenic risk score (PRS), summarizing the effect of genetic variants, was associated with NIHL susceptibility. METHODS: Participants were recruited from an ongoing Occupational Noise Exposure and Health Study (ONEHS), including 3836 NIHL cases and 2028 normal hearing (NH) controls. A weighted PRS, calculated from seven genetic variants, stratified participants

Auditory function in individuals within Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy pedigrees.

The aims of this study are to investigate whether auditory dysfunction is part of the spectrum of neurological abnormalities associated with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and to determine the perceptual consequences of auditory neuropathy (AN) in affected listeners. Forty-eight subjects confirmed by genetic testing as having one of four mitochondrial mutations associated with LHON (mt11778, mtDNA14484, mtDNA14482 and mtDNA3460) participated. Thirty-two of these had lost vision, and 16 were asymptomatic at the point of data collection. While the majority of individuals showed norma
