Identification of a global repressor gene, rsmA, of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora that controls extracellular enzymes, N-(3-oxohexanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone, and pathogenicity in soft-rotting Erwinia spp.

The production of extracellular enzymes such as pectate lyase (Pel), polygalacturonase (Peh), cellulase (Cel), and protease (Prt) is activated by the cell density (quorum)-sensing signal, N-(3-oxohexanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone (HSL); plant signals; and aep genes during postexponential growth of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora 71. Studies with mutants of E. carotovora subsp. carotovora 71 derepressed in exoenzyme production led to the identification of a negative regulator gene, rsmA (rsm, repressor of secondary metabolites). Nucleotide sequencing, transcript assays, and protein analysis e

Prevention of postoperative small bowel obstruction in gastric cancer.

Postoperative adhesion is a frequent problem in patients undergoing surgery. In particular, gastrectomy is associated with a high risk of bowel obstruction. However, there are few reports of small bowel obstruction (SBO) after gastrectomy in the English-language literature. We reviewed the literature to assess the effectiveness of various techniques for preventing adhesion in patients treated with gastrectomy. We assumed that strategies used to prevent postoperative adhesion associated with colorectal surgery, cholecystectomy, appendectomy and gynecologic procedures are similar to those used i

Straw addition promotes biodegradable microplastic degradation and affects soil ecosystems: A comparative study across different soil types.

Biodegradable microplastics (bio-MPs), specifically poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) microplastics (PBAT-MPs), are an emerging soil contaminant of significant concern. While straw incorporation is a common agricultural practice, the biochemical interactions between crop residues and PBAT-MPs across diverse soil habitats remain poorly understood. Specifically, it is unclear how soil texture and initial organic matter availability modulate the microbial response and subsequent plastic degradation. This study conducted a 120-day incubation experiment using loam and sandy soils to investiga

Modulation of Maillard reaction pathways and aroma profiles in peanut oil using enzymatically tailored peanut meal hydrolysates.

This study establishes a mechanistic framework for directing Maillard-driven aroma formation in peanut oil through targeted enzymatic precursor engineering, exploring the potential of precursor engineering for flavor modulation in peanut oil. Defatted peanut meal was subjected to selective hydrolysis using distinct glycosidases (cellulase, hemicellulase, pectinase, α-amylase, and amyloglucosidase) in combination with proteases to systematically reconstruct the precursor microenvironment (reducing sugars and free amino acids). The resulting hydrolysates were thermally reacted with cold-pressed

Establishment of a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated system for targeted editing of the MFS gene in mint.

The key message of this study is that we established a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome-editing system for Mentha haplocalyx "738" by optimizing protoplast transient assay and screening effective regulatory elements. Targeted knockout of the MFS gene generated edited mint plants with reduced menthofuran content, offering a strategy for quality improvement of mint essential oil. The commercial value of mint (Mentha spp.) essential oil is often diminished by the presence of undesirable metabolites, notably menthofuran, which impairs flavor and raises safety concerns. This study aimed to develop a rob

Fractal kinetics unveils the dual regulatory mechanism of sophorolipid in overcoming spatial heterogeneity during lignocellulose hydrolysis.

Fractal kinetics was employed to elucidate how sophorolipid enhances enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic substrates. Graded bagasse substrates with varying lignin and accessible surface areas were prepared by controlled alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment. Non‑productive cellulase adsorption onto lignin was quantified by Langmuir isotherms, and accessible surface areas of cellulose and lignin were separately measured by dye adsorption. Sophorolipid reduced the Langmuir adsorption constant by 73.8-85.7 % and binding affinity by 77.8-88.3 %, with reductions positively correlated to ligni
