Intraspecies violence, including lethal interactions, is a relatively common phenomenon in mammals. Contrarily, interspecies violence has mainly been investigated in the context of predation and received most research attention in carnivores. Here, we provide the first information of two lethal coalitionary attacks of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) on another hominid species, western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), that occur sympatrically in the Loango National Park in Gabon. In both events, the chimpanzees significantly outnumbered the gorillas and victims were infant

Mansonella (M.) perstans filariasis is widely found in Africa, including Gabon where Loa loa is also endemic. This study reports the total IgE titres according to different bioclinical forms of single or co-infection with L. loa and M. perstans in 138 patients and 20 healthy controls. The median parasite density was significantly higher in cases of loiasis. IgE titres were higher in patients with microscopic dual-infection and in the group of patients with occult loiasis plus M. perstans microfilaraemia (8425 [5292-20,679]KUI/L and 6304 [1045-10,326]KUI/L, respectively), compared to individual

In this report, we show an age-related buildup of agglutinating activity as well as serum activity against rosette formation in children living in areas of Kenya and Gabon where malaria is endemic. Sera from Kenyans in general exhibited a stronger and wider immune response toward the epitopes, probably reflecting a difference in transmission patterns between the two areas. Thus, our results indicate that repeated malaria attacks in areas of endemicity, and consequently exposure to different isolate-specific antigens, will elicit an antibody-mediated response eventually enabling recognition of

Relapses of enteric fever induced by Schistosoma intercalatum have been observed to occur in central Africa. In Libreville, Gabon, 70 children (ages, 2.1-15.9 years) who were seronegative for human immunodeficiency virus and were hospitalized for septicemic salmonellosis underwent rectal biopsy for diagnosis of S. intercalatum infection. A nontyphoidal Salmonella species was isolated from 53 of the 70 patients: Salmonella typhimurium in 14 cases; Salmonella enteritidis in 7 cases; Salmonella galiema in 4 cases; Salmonella arizonae in 3 cases; and other species in 25 cases. Schistosomal eggs we

By evaluating the diagnostic methods developed in our laboratory, the prevalence of loaiosis was estimated among 201 individuals from the province of Haut Ogooué in Gabon using IgG4 serology and nested-PCR. The study showed that the prevalence of loaiosis was higher than that described using standard microscopy. IgG4-based ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay) using crude extract of Loa loa microfilariae showed that 80% (35/44) of microfilaraemic individuals (MF') and 56% (88/157) of amicrofilaraemics (AMF) presented antibodies. By contrast, L. loa specific DNA amplified by nested-PCR was

Pentadesma butyracea is a medicinal plant of which bark decoctions are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhea symptoms in Gabon. The aim of the present work was to perform phytochemical and pharmacological analyses of decoctions of P. butyracea bark. In a principal approach, spectrophotometric analyses were used to quantify phenolic compounds, followed by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis that allowed the identification of flavanone-flavone dimers as the main metabolites. Pharmacological analyses showed the absence of toxicity, thus confirming the

We report an outbreak investigation of two fatal cases of autochthonous Plasmodium falciparum malaria that occurred in Belgium in September 2020. Various hypotheses of the potential source of infection were investigated. The most likely route of transmission was through an infectious exotic Anopheles mosquito that was imported via the international airport of Brussels or the military airport Melsbroek and infected the cases who lived at 5 km from the airports. Based on genomic analysis of the parasites collected from the two cases, the most likely origin of the Plasmodium was Gabon or Cameroon

Despite lack of supporting evidence from epidemiologic studies and/or confirmed case reports over the last 30 years, maps in non-specialist works on tropical medicine as well as in documents from specialized organizations (e.g. WHO) systematically include Congo and Gabon, two French-speaking countries, within the zone of endemic filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti. One certainty is that no cases were found in field studies carried out in these countries in the late 1970s and 1980s but unfortunately published only in French. Studies that we carried out in the Congo between 1982 and 1987 as p

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the result of cross-species transmission of simian immunodeficiency virus from chimpanzees (SIVcpz). SIVcpz is a chimeric virus which shares common ancestors with viruses infecting red-capped mangabeys and a subset of guenon species. The epidemiology of SIV infection in hominoids is characterized by low prevalences and an uneven geographic distribution. Surveys in Cameroon indicated that two closely related members of the guenon species subset, mustached guenons and greater spot-nosed guenons, infected with SIVmus and SIVgsn, respectively, also ha

Molecular screening of 300 at-risk people from Central Africa identified 2 human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-4-infected individuals. A zoonotic origin of infection was suggested, as both individuals reported being severely bitten by a gorilla during hunting activities. One strain was highly divergent and was designated as the HTLV-4 subtype-b prototype.

This study reports the first field evaluation of a new diagnostic technique for Ebola virus disease with sensitivity and specificity. Ebola virus causes rare but fulminating outbreaks in Equatorial Africa. Rapid differentiation from other infections is critical for timely implementation of public health measures. Patients usually die before developing antibodies, necessitating rapid virus detection. A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was developed, implemented and evaluated at Centre International de Recherches Médicales de Franceville (CIRMF) in Gabon, to detect

BACKGROUND: Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) infection is estimated to affect at least 5-10 million people globally and can cause adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma. The global distribution of HTLV-1 is characterised by endemic foci (prevalence confined to specific populations) in Japan, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, and Oceania. Transmission occurs through vertical, sexual, bloodborne, and zoonotic routes, but their relative contributions are poorly characterised and depend on the setting. This study aims to quantify the relative contributions of vertical, sexual, bloodborne, and z

Malaria poses a serious global health problem, with half the world population being at risk. Regular screening is crucial for breaking the transmission cycle and combatting the disease spreading. However, current diagnostic tools relying on blood samples face challenges in many malaria-epidemic areas. In the present study, we demonstrate the detection of the malaria-causing Plasmodium parasite in non-invasive saliva samples (N = 61) from infected individuals by combining a DNA-based Rolling-circle-Enhanced-Enzyme-Activity-Detection (REEAD) sensor system with a chemiluminescence readout that co

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) Fc N-glycosylation affects antibody-mediated effector functions and varies with inflammation rooted in both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Worldwide, communicable and non-communicable diseases tend to segregate geographically. Therefore, we studied whether IgG Fc N-glycosylation varies in populations with different environmental exposures in different parts of the world. IgG Fc N-glycosylation was analysed in serum/plasma of 700 school-age children from different communities of Gabon, Ghana, Ecuador, the Netherlands and Germany. IgG1 galactosylation levels w

Specific IgG subclasses were investigated in two villages (Okoumbi and Ndjokaye) in southeast Gabon with different Loa loa transmission intensities of approximately 9,000 and 1,300 infective larvae (L3) per person per year, respectively. IgG subclasses were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using extracts of L. loa L3, microfilariae (MF), or adult worms. Levels of L3-specific IgG3 were significantly higher in the village with low transmission (Ndjokaye) (P = 0.006). In contrast, MF-specific IgG2 was significantly higher in Okoumbi than in Ndjokaye (P = 0.0009). In the hi

In the last decades, with little or no surveillance sleeping sickness has returned to alarming levels comparable to the early twentieth century. Sixty million people are considered at risk but only 3-4 million are under surveillance, yielding some 45 000 new cases annually. It is estimated that at least 300 000-500 000 people are presently infected. Despite the almost universal presence of the vector in sub-Saharan Africa and the existence of an animal parasite reservoir, it is technically feasible to control and eliminate the disease as a public health problem. The authors describe, step-by-s

The frequency of cytokine-producing T cells was assessed in patients of different age groups (29 infants, aged 1-5 years; 30 schoolchildren, aged 6-14 years; 26 adults, aged >15 years) with acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria from Gabon. By using flow cytometry for the intracellular detection of cytokines, a striking expansion was seen, in adults compared with children, of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells with the following profiles of type 1 cytokine production: interleukin (IL)-2-/interferon (IFN)-gamma+, IL-2+/IFN-gamma+, and IL-2+/IFN-gamma-. Patients with hyperparasitemia had a significantly lower f

The aim of this review is to describe the role of water fluoridation in preventing dental caries worldwide. Community water fluoridation began in 1945 and over the past 20 years has reached over 400 million people. In several countries, such as USA, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Malaysia, Oman, Chile, Gabon and Brazil, a high proportion of the population receives fluoridated water. The clinical effectiveness is well established. Both water fluoridation and fluoride-containing toothpaste are effective and each adds to the effect of the other. Coverage of water f

Caliciviruses (Caliciviridae) and astroviruses (Astroviridae) are among the leading cause of non-bacterial foodborne disease and gastroenteritis in human. These non-enveloped RNA viruses infect a wide range of vertebrate species including rodents. Rodents are among the most important hosts of infectious diseases globally and are responsible for over 80 zoonotic pathogens that affect humans. Therefore, screening pathogens in rodents will be is necessary to prevent cross-species transmission to prevent zoonotic outbreaks.
