Research on the Protective Effects and Mechanisms of Gallic Acid Against Cognitive Impairment Induced by Chronic Sleep Deprivation.

Background: Gallic acid (GA) is a dietary polyphenol widely found in walnuts, tea leaves, and grapes, and it is recognized for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) is known to disrupt redox balance, promote neuroinflammation, and impair cognition, while effective nutritional strategies to mitigate these effects remain scarce. This study was designed to evaluate the protective potential of GA against CSD-induced cognitive deficits in mice and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Seventy-two male ICR mice were randomly allocated to

Multiple therapies relieve long-term tardive dyskinesia in a patient with chronic schizophrenia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a serious and disabling movement disorder; it impairs social function and quality of life and increases the mortality rate. TD is usually induced by the use of antipsychotic drugs; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Pharmacotherapy of TD includes cholinergic drugs, benzodiazepines, ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), antioxidants, amantadine, propanolol, botulinum toxin, valbenazine, and deutetrabenazine, whereas the non-pharmacotherapy approach includes modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) and deep brain stimulation. We successfully treated

Substances of Interest That Support Glaucoma Therapy.

Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease in which pro-apoptotic signals are directed to retinal ganglion cells. During this disease the conventional outflow pathway becomes malfunctioning. Aqueous humour builds up in the anterior chamber, leading to increased intraocular pressure. Both of these events are related to functional impairment. The knowledge of molecular mechanisms allows us to better understand the usefulness of substances that can support anti-glaucoma therapy. The goal of glaucoma therapy is not simply to lower intraocular pressure; it should also be to facilitate the survival of ret

Evaluation of partial area under the concentration time curve to estimate midazolam apparent oral clearance for cytochrome P450 3A phenotyping.

BACKGROUND: Midazolam apparent oral clearance (CLORAL) is used to estimate intestinal and hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A activity. A limited sampling approach was performed to access a midazolam partial area under the concentration time curve (AUC) to estimate CLORAL. METHODS: Midazolam plasma concentrations from healthy adults were obtained during CYP3A baseline (n=116), inhibition (n=75), and induction or activation (n=66) from seven published studies. Observed CLORAL and partial AUCs of AUC0-2, AUC0-4, AUC0-6, AUC1-2, AUC1-4, AUC2-4, and AUC2-6 were determined by noncompartmental analysi

Smeloff-Cutter aortic valve endocarditis 31 years after implantation.

This study investigated the effects of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) extract on seeded Schwann cells within poly(DL-lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) conduits by in vitro and in vivo trials for peripheral nerve regeneration. The seeding efficiency of Schwann cells in serum-deprived culture medium, which simulated the environment of mechanical trauma on an injured nerve site, was improved by adding different dosages of EGb 761 (0, 1, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 microg/mL). The analytical results showed enhanced cell attachment and survival, reduced LDH release and increased MTT values, particularly in th

Sequential fermentation of Ginkgo biloba seeds by Bacillus subtilis natto and Lactobacillus plantarum enhanced nutrition, flavor and lipid-lowering activity.

BACKGROUND: Ginkgo biloba seeds (GBS) are rich in flavonoids, proteins and reducing sugar, and have been consumed as food and medicinal nuts for thousands of years. However, the presence of ginkgotoxins and their poor palatability limit people's consumption of them. RESULTS: This study used solid-state fermentation with Bacillus subtilis natto and Lactobacillus plantarum to enhance the safety and benefits of GBS. Optimized fermentation conditions increased the content of beneficial components like total flavonoids, soluble protein and reducing sugar while eliminating unpleasant odors (isoamyl

Rare cases of Ménière's disease in children.

Classical Ménière's disease is rarely found in children and literature regarding it is scarce. In general, the frequency of Ménière's disease in children is only 0.4-7.0 per cent of that in adults. The progression pattern of Ménière's disease in children is not known well. Here, we report three cases of Ménière's disease in children less than 15 years old, treated over nine years. The three cases comprise 14- and 13-year-old boys and a nine-year-old girl. Two of the three patients initially complained only of recurrent bouts of vertigo, without any tinnitus, ear fullness or hearing impairment.

Screening and Determination of Biomarkers and Their Associated Active Components for Enhanced Therapeutic Effect of Exocarpium Citri Grandis-Folium Ginkgo Couplet on Liver Injury Caused by Hyperlipidemia via UPLC-TOF-MS and UPLC-MS.

INTRODUCTION: The combination of Exocarpium Citri Grandis-Folium Ginkgo (E-GC) demonstrates superior therapeutic effects on liver injury caused by hyperlipidemia compared with individual use; however, accurate and quantifiable indicators for evaluating the efficacy and quality of the couplet remain lacking. Reliance solely on changes in certain differential metabolites or the bioavailability of chemical components is insufficient to confirm the superior efficacy of the couplet. METHODS: In this study, a rat model of liver injury caused by hyperlipidemia was used to verify the enhanced efficac

TCMNet: an AI-driven strategy for optimizing traditional Chinese medicine.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), have provided powerful tools for systematically modeling the complexity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). To overcome the limitations of subjective formula design and unweighted target prioritization, we developed TCMNet, an AI-powered strategy that integrates LLM-assisted disease knowledge mining, protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, and deep learning-based binding prediction to support herbal formula evaluation and active compounds identification. METHODS: TCMNet integrates AI-guided literature

[Participation of pineal gland in antistressor activity of adaptogenic drugs].

Chronic stress produces some morphological changes in rats, including thymus weight reduction, adrenal hypertrophy, and peptic ulcers in stomach. Repeated administration of phytoadaptogenic drugs (ginseng and bilobil) decreased these stress-induced disorders. The antistressor activity of drugs was attenuated upon by removal of the pineal gland. Histochemical and morphometric investigation of pineal tissues in stressed animals showed that that the pharmacological effect was accompanied by increasing functional activity of the pineal gland. It is suggested that pineal mobilization may participat

Protective effects of Ginkgolide B on myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury: role of the GAS6/Axl signaling pathway.

Myocardial ischemia can induce myocardial infarction, posing a severe threat to human health. Although restoration of blood and oxygen supply alleviates tissue damage and reduces infarct size, reperfusion may trigger additional injury that exacerbates myocardial structural and functional disturbances, a phenomenon termed myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI). Ginkgolide B (GB), a terpenoid compound extracted from Ginkgo biloba leaves, exhibits cardiovascular protective properties. This study investigates the potential anti-MIRI effects of GB, with specific emphasis on elucidating the r

Analysis of online prescription patterns in Chinese patients with sequelae of cerebral infarction: a real-world study.

Cerebral infarction (CI) is a common cerebrovascular disease worldwide, and the burden caused by the sequelae of CI has increased significantly. However, current treatment guidelines lack standardized recommendations for pharmacotherapy of sequelae of CI. This retrospective study collected and analyzed 1.98 million prescriptions concerning sequelae of CI from patients admitted to Zhiyun Health Internet Hospital in 2022. The mean age of patients was 66.2 ± 11.4 years, and 52.40% were male. 79.73% had one or more comorbidities. For treatment, the prescriptions of 1-, 2- and ≥ 3-drug accounted fo

γ-Aminobutyric acid promotes the inhibition of hair growth induced by chronic restraint stress.

Stress plays a critical role in hair loss, although the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been reported to be associated with stress; however, whether it affects stress-induced hair growth inhibition is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the potential roles and mechanisms of action of GABA in chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced hair growth inhibition. We performed RNA-seq analysis and found that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, including genes related to GABA receptors, significantly

A neuroprotective herbal mixture inhibits caspase-3-independent apoptosis in retinal ganglion cells.

It was previously demonstrated that Menta-FX, a mixture of Panax quinquefolius L. (PQE), Ginkgo biloba (GBE), and Hypericum perforatum extracts (HPE), enhances retinal ganglion cell survival after axotomy. However, the mechanisms of neuroprotection remain unknown. The aim of this study is to elucidate the neuroprotective mechanisms of Menta-FX. Since PQE, GBE and HPE have all been observed to display anti-oxidative property, the involvement of anti-oxidation in Menta-FX's neuroprotective effect was investigated. Menta-FX lowered nitric oxide (NO) content in axotomized retinas without affecting

Ginkgolide B Protects Cardiomyocytes from Angiotensin II-Induced Hypertrophy via Regulation of Autophagy through SIRT1-FoxO1.

Ginkgolide B (GB) is an active ingredient extracted from Ginkgo biloba leaves. However, the effects of GB on cardiac hypertrophy remain unclear. The study is aimed at determining whether GB could alleviate cardiac hypertrophy and exploring its underlying molecular mechanism. Rat cardiomyocyte cell line H9c2 cells were pretreated with GB and incubated with angiotensin II (Ang II) to simulate an in vitro cardiac hypertrophy model. Cell viability, cell size, hypertrophy markers, and autophagy were determined in H9c2 cells after Ang II treatment. Proteins involved in autophagy and the SIRT1 pathwa
