Defective reproduction of passive meaningless gestures in right brain damage: a perceptual disorder of one's own body knowledge?

Right Hemisphere Damaged Patients (RHDP) with left hemiparesis are known to experience motor programming difficulties and to have poorer functional outcome when compared with Left Hemisphere Damaged Patients (LHDP). The role played by body-related cognitive disorders remains unclear. In this study we investigate whether reproduction of passive meaningless gestures may contribute to a further development of this question. Ten RHDP with neglect, 10 RHDP without neglect, 10 LHDP, and 10 controls were given a battery of tasks requiring reproduction of passive meaningless gestures. The gestures wer

[Alterations in the imitation of gestures (conduction apraxia)].

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The aim of this presentation is to report the performance pattern of a patient who suffered ideomotor apraxia with a disorder pattern of the conduction apraxia (CA) type. This clinical picture was originally reported by Ochipa et al. in 1994 as an alteration in the pathway that joins the two lexicons; later, in 2000, Cubelli et al. claimed that there is no evidence for the existence of such a pathway and suggested that the symptoms were due to an alteration affecting the mechanisms governing visuomotor conversion. CASE REPORT: A 51 year old patient who, following a trau

Recognition and imitation of pantomimed motor acts after unilateral parietal and premotor lesions: a perspective on apraxia.

We compared gesture comprehension and imitation in patients with lesions in the left parietal lobe (LPAR, n=5) and premotor cortex/supplementary motor area (LPMA, n=8) in patients with damage to the right parietal lobe (RPAR, n=6) and right premotor/supplementary motor area (RPMA, n=6) and in 16 non-brain damaged control subjects. Three patients with left parietal lobe damage had aphasia. Subjects were shown 136 meaningful pantomimed motor acts on a videoscreen and were asked to identify the movements and to imitate the motor acts from memory with their ipsilesional and contralesional hand or

[A neuropsychological and functional brain imaging study of visuo-imitative apraxia].

We describe the case of a 58-years-old right-handed women suffering from an occipital-parietal lesion. The administration of a cognitively based assessment tool for limb praxis (Batterie d'Evaluation des Praxies, B.E.P., Peigneux and Van der Linden, 1998) demonstrated bilateral visuo-imitative apraxia. Gesture production was mainly characterised by spatial, errors, and imitation of meaningful gestures was worse than their pantomime on verbal command. Moreover, the imitation of meaningless gestures and their reproduction on a manikin were worse than imitation of their matched meaningful gesture

Development of self-concept in Afro-American children.

Studies of self-concept in Afro-American children differ in their findings according to whether the research was conducted before or after the civil rights movement of the 1960s. While the earlier studies reported that the Afro-Americans had lower self-esteem than Caucasians, studies conducted after the height of the civil rights movement do not support that finding. The development of self-concept in Afro-American children is influenced by the strengths and weaknesses of the family, extended family, or community; individual perceptions of untoward events or environments; and the ability to de

Effect of amino acid input rates on lens metabolism in a perfusion culture system.

A perfusion system has been established for the organ culture of the lens. The system is designed so that a constant flow of fluid occurs past the lens and a separate channel of fluid simultaneously bypasses the lens. Lens metabolic activity can be determined by analyzing differences between these two samples of fluid. The system also maintains a level of pressure comparable to intraocular pressure. Apparatus for observation and photography of the lens is built into the system. The purpose of these studies was to determine if this perfusion system could maintain the rabbit lens close to the ph

Participation in Social Skills Therapy is Associated With Enhanced Recall Memory by Children With Down Syndrome: An Exploratory Study.

Participation in social skills therapy (SST) facilitates cognitive functioning in children with developmental disabilities. The present pilot study examined whether participation in SST was associated with enhanced encoding and 1-month delayed recall in children with Down syndrome (DS). Children were presented with novel three-step event sequences in an elicited imitation procedure. Immediate imitation was permitted as an index of encoding; long-term memory was assessed 1 month later. Parents completed questionnaires inquiring about children's participation in SST. Participation in SST was ass

Altered brain activation during action imitation and observation in schizophrenia: a translational approach to investigating social dysfunction in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Social impairments are a key feature of schizophrenia, but their underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Imitation, a process through which we understand the minds of others, involves the so-called mirror neuron system, a network comprising the inferior parietal lobe, inferior frontal gyrus, and posterior superior temporal sulcus. The authors examined mirror neuron system function in schizophrenia. METHOD: Sixteen medicated schizophrenia patients and 16 healthy comparison subjects performed an action imitation/observation task during functional MRI. Participants saw a video of

Density, frequency and the expressive phonology of children with phonological delay.

The effect of word-level variables on expressive phonology has not been widely studied, although the properties of words likely bear on the emergence of sound structure (Stoel-Gammon, 2011). Eight preschoolers, diagnosed with phonological delay, were assigned to treatment to experimentally induce gains in expressive phonology. Erred sounds were taught using stimulus words that varied orthogonally in neighborhood density and word frequency as the independent variables. Generalization was the dependent variable, defined as production accuracy of treated and untreated (erred) sounds. Blocked comp

Tool use and action planning in apraxia.

Apraxia after left inferior parietal lesions has been widely interpreted as evidence of damage or impaired access to representations of tool-use, but most research has investigated pantomime of tool actions, not handling of actual tools. An alternative account is that inferior parietal damage does not affect tool-use representations but impairs cognitive processing about postural and hand-tool spatial relationships which is necessary for planning and controlling any complex action. Four apraxic patients and 10 age-matched controls were asked to reach rapidly for tools or abstract objects of si

Deficient internal models for planning hand-object interactions in apraxia.

Motor imagery (MI) has been associated with planning stages of motor production, and in particular, with internal models that predict the sensory consequences of motor commands and specify the motor commands required to achieve a given outcome. In this study we investigated several predictions derived from the hypothesis that ideomotor apraxia (IM), a deficit in pantomime and imitation of skilled actions, may be attributable in part to deficits in internal models for planning object-related actions, in the face of relatively intact on-line, feedback-driven control of action. This hypothesis pr

Dorsal root ganglion neuromodulation restores accumbal gate to inhibit mechanical allodynia.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical allodynia refers to a hypersensitive status in response to innoxious stimuli caused by neuropathic pain. A therapeutic strategy to reverse the sensory impairment is neuromodulation treatment selectively targeting the dorsal root ganglion. However, the supra-spinal mechanism of neuromodulation therapy remains elusive. METHODS: By combination of the multiple-channel neurophysiology recording and cellular manipulation in freely moving rats, we investigated the gate function of nucleus accumbens in control of nociceptive inputs, and its role in pulsed-radiofrequency neuromod

Advances in Neuromodulation Techniques for Aphasia Rehabilitation: A Comprehensive Review.

Aphasia, a language impairment resulting from stroke or neurodegenerative disease, presents complex rehabilitation challenges. Recently, neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and mirror neuron system (MNS) therapy have emerged as promising adjuncts to traditional speech-language therapy. This narrative review summarizes current advances in these 3 modalities. tDCS involves low-intensity electrical stimulation to modulate cortical excitability, with evidence supporting its use in post-stroke aphasia (PSA) and

Biomechanical comparison of composite and cadaveric humeri models in experiments on operated humeral shaft fractures.

A study was undertaken to determine how well contacting fracture fragments of composite bone replicated the behavior of fracture fragments in real bone. Ten composite and ten real humeral diaphyses were transected and reconstructed with limited-contact dynamic-compression plates. Two screws were placed on each side of the transection site and a calibrated electronic sensor sheet was placed between the imitated fracture fragments. After insertion of the distal screws, pressure measurements were made during insertion of the first proximal screw in compression mode, during insertion of the second

Chitosan-based promising scaffolds for the construction of tailored nanosystems against osteoporosis: Current status and future prospects.

Despite advancements in therapeutic techniques, restoring bone tissue after damage remains a challenging task. Tissue engineering or targeted drug delivery solutions aim to meet the pressing clinical demand for treatment alternatives by creating substitute materials that imitate the structural and biological characteristics of healthy tissue. Polymers derived from natural sources typically exhibit enhanced biological compatibility and bioactivity when compared to manufactured polymers. Chitosan is a unique polysaccharide derived from chitin through deacetylation, offering biodegradability, bio

Finite-Time Contraction Control of a Ring-Shaped Soft Pneumatic Actuator Mimicking Gastric Pathologic Motility Conditions.

Soft gastric simulators are the latest gastric models designed to imitate gastrointestinal (GI) functions in actual physiological conditions. They are used in in vitro tests for examining the drug and food behaviors in the GI tract. As the main motility function of the GI tract, the peristalsis can be altered in some gastric disorders, for example, by being delayed or accelerated. To simulate the stomach motility, a GI simulator must achieve a prescribed healthy or pathological peristalsis. This requires the simulator to be controlled in a closed loop. Unlike conventional controllers that stab

Simulated patients and their reality: An inquiry into theory and method.

Simulated standardized patients (SSP) have emerged as close to a 'gold standard' for measuring the quality of clinical care. This method resolves problems of patient mix across healthcare providers and allows care to be benchmarked against preexisting standards. Nevertheless, SSPs are not real patients. How, then, should data from SSPs be considered relative to clinical observations with 'real' patients in a given health system? Here, we reject the proposition that SSPs are direct substitutes for real patients and that the validity of SSP studies therefore relies on their ability to imitate re

Toilet Training: Common Questions and Answers.

Toilet training is a significant developmental milestone in early childhood. Most U.S. children achieve the physiologic, cognitive, and emotional development necessary for toilet training by 18 to 30 months of age. Markers of readiness for toilet training include being able to walk, put on and remove clothing, and follow parental instruction; expressive language; awareness of a full bladder or rectum; and demonstrated dissatisfaction with a soiled diaper. Other readiness cues include imitating toileting behavior, expressing desire to toilet, and demonstrating bladder or bowel control (staying

Physical Activity for Autistic Adults: Recommendations for a Shift in Approach.

Physical activity is beneficial for physical and mental health in the general population. Among autistic people, a range of physical and mental health conditions, particularly depression and anxiety, occur more frequently than in the general population. Physical activity interventions could help improve physical and mental health in autistic adults, but there is a lack of research in the area. The aim of this perspective article is to explore research into physical activity interventions for autistic adults, and identify gaps particularly in need of addressing. This perspective article conside
