Anatomical risk factors in primary angle-closure glaucoma. A ten year follow up survey based on limbal and axial anterior chamber depths in a high risk population.

A population of 539 persons was examined in 1979, using LCD and ACD estimations acc. to van Herick et al. and by Haag Streit pachymetry, respectively. ACD had been measured already in 1969, due to a remarkable occurrence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) in the survey population of Greenland Eskimos (District of Uummannaq). The present follow up study in 1989 aimed at persons presently above age 40, who had shown either an LCD value graded as 0 (contact) or 1 (< 0.25 of corneal thickness = CT), or a value of 2 (= 0.25 CT) if an ACD value of < = 2.70 mm (CT included) had also been found.

Primary angle-closure glaucoma among Alaskan Eskimos.

An epidemiological study of the occurrence of angle-closure glaucoma was made under the Eskimos population of the Norton Sound and Bering Straits region of Alaska. Among 1673 Alaskan Natives examined 14 cases (0.8%) of angle-closure glaucoma were found, in 0.5% of the men and 1.2% of the women; for persons above the age of 40 years these figures were 2.1% and 5.5% respectively. Angle-closure glaucoma was found in 11.8% of women above the age of 60 years. A shallow anterior chamber was seen twice as frequently in women as in men. Above the age of 30 years the chamber angle was considered to be

Long-term follow-up of chronic suppurative otitis media in a high-risk children cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is the leading cause of mild to moderate hearing impairment in children worldwide and a major public health problem in many indigenous populations. There is a lack of basic epidemiological facts and knowledge on the development of CSOM, as the disease primarily affects developing countries where research capacities often are limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the long-term outcome of CSOM in a high-risk population and to identify risk factors. METHODS: Follow-up study (2008) on a population-based cohort of 465 children in Gre

Vaccination coverage among U.S. adolescents aged 13-17 years eligible for the Vaccines for Children program, 2009.

OBJECTIVES: We compared (1) characteristics of adolescents who are and are not entitled to receive free vaccines from the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program and (2) vaccination coverage with meningococcal conjugate (MCV4), quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV4), and tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccines among VFC-eligible and non-VFC-eligible adolescents. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2009 National Immunization Survey-Teen, a nationally representative, random-digit-dialed survey of households with adolescents aged 13-17 years (n = 20,066). Differences in sociodemograp

Invasive pneumococcal disease caused by nonvaccine serotypes among alaska native children with high levels of 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine coverage.

CONTEXT: With routine childhood vaccination using heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, one concern has been the potential for emergence and expansion of replacement disease caused by serotypes not contained in the heptavalent conjugate vaccine. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether replacement disease is associated with the overall decline in invasive pneumococcal disease among Alaska Native children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: Alaska statewide longitudinal population-based laboratory surveillance of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae infections from January 1, 1995, through December 31,

Midline congenital anomalies: the estimated occurrence among American Indian and Alaska Native infants.

While congenital anomalies have been identified as the second leading cause of infant mortality among American Indians and Alaska Natives, limited information exists concerning the morbidity of such malformations. This study was undertaken to address this concern. Using data from the national hospital discharge database of the Indian Health Service, for the years 1980-1988, morbidity rates of seven, relatively common and easily identifiable midline malformations among liveborn infants in this minority population were estimated. The seven congenital anomalies and the estimated rates per 10000 b

The expression pattern of hepatitis B e antigen and antibody in different ethnic and clinical groups of hepatitis B surface antigen carriers.

The presence of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and its antibody (anti-HBe) was studied in 249 asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) of different ethnic origin and clinical course. Among male homosexuals, renal transplant recipients, and hemodialysis patients, > 90% were HBeAg-positive. In contrast, anti-HBe was present in > 85% of HBsAg-positive Danish pregnant women and blood donors. In presumably immunologically intact persons, significantly elevated levels of transaminases were found in the HBeAg-positive group as compared with the anti-BHe group (P < 0.0001). Among pe

Primary angle-closure glaucoma. Oculometry, epidemiology, and genetics in a high risk population.

The ocular dimensions in patients suffering from primary angle-closure glaucoma (a.c.g.) have been studied in several clinical series, chiefly in Caucasians. The epidemiology and aetiology of a.c.g. are less well known although genetic factors seem to be involved. Eskimos have recently been shown to constitute a high risk population with respect to a.c.g. Consequently, a series of oculometric, epidemiologic, and genetic studies among Greenland Eskimos was undertaken. Besides the immediate purpose, prevention of blindness in this population, the survey had important general aspects and the foll

Respiratory health and its determinants among Nunavimmiut: results from the Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 Nunavik Health Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Respiratory diseases are the leading cause of hospitalization in Nunavik (northern Québec, Canada) and contribute to disparities in life expectancy with the rest of Canada. As part of Qanuilirpitaa? 2017, a cross-sectional population-based health survey, we sought to describe the prevalence of respiratory health indicators, including the first estimate of airway obstruction based on spirometry in an Inuit population, and explore their associated characteristics. METHODS: We analyzed data from 1296 participants aged 16 years and older, using multivariate logistic regression to asse

Integrating a model of care within a community-based managed alcohol program with indigenous men experiencing homelessness and alcohol use: a retrospective chart review.

BACKGROUND: In Montréal, many members of the Indigenous community are affected by homelessness and substance use, explained in part by the loss of cultural identity. These challenges are compounded by barriers to health and social services, and reduced shelter capacity during the pandemic. In response, an urban Indigenous-led community organization developed a managed alcohol program (MAP) in partnership with a university hospital (UH) addiction medicine team in Montréal, Canada. We describe health outcomes, service access, and substance use among Indigenous men experiencing homelessness and s

Gender differences in HIV and hepatitis C related vulnerabilities among aboriginal young people who use street drugs in two Canadian cities.

OBJECTIVES: Vulnerability to HIV and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection for indigenous populations worldwide must be contextualized in experiences of current and past trauma. Aboriginal women entrenched in poverty face further gender-specific harms which place them at increased risk for HIV infection. METHODS: This study was cross-sectional and based on a community-based sample of Aboriginal young people (Metis, Aboriginal, First Nations, Inuit, and non-status Indians) between the ages of 14 and 30 years who used injection or non-injection non-cannabis illegal drugs (street drugs) in the previ

Incidence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis among American Indians and Alaska natives.

IMPORTANCE: More thorough evaluation of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neuron disease in unique populations could provide clues to etiologies for these idiopathic conditions, and educational programs for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people and health care professionals on reservations could improve awareness, understanding, diagnosis, and treatment. In the ongoing search for susceptibility genes, studying particular racial groups, such as AI/ANs,might facilitate the identification of new mutations. OBJECTIVE: To provide better understanding of ALS and secondarily o

Alcohol/drug exposure, HIV-related sexual risk among urban American Indian and Alaska Native Youth: evidence from a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Migration of the native populations from reservations to the urban areas has resulted in mixed ethnicities of American Indian/Alaskan Native (AIAN) children. Minority youth require special attention and services in urban schools as they disproportionately experience poverty, low educational attainment, unemployment, and single-parent status. METHODS: We used 2005 and 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data to examine alcohol/drug use patterns and their association with sexual risk taking among AIAN only (single-racial) and biracial youth in combination with White, African American, o

Sex partners of Alaskan drug users: HIV transmission between white men and Alaska Native women.

This study describes patterns of sexual behavior and condom use in a sample of 1125 Black, White, and Alaska Native drug users. Data are self-reports of recent sexual behavior, including descriptions of (up to) the five most recent sex partners. This provided information on 1116 sex partner pairs, of which at least one partner was a drug user. Sex partner pairs involving a White man and an Alaska Native woman were frequently reported. Level of condom use within these pairs was significantly lower than within all other pairs. The implications of a potential vector of HIV transmission from White

Bird harvesting practices and knowledge, risk perceptions, and attitudes regarding avian influenza among Canadian First Nations subsistence hunters: implications for influenza pandemic plans.

BACKGROUND: There is concern of avian influenza virus (AIV) infections in humans. Subsistence hunters may be a potential risk group for AIV infections as they frequently come into close contact with wild birds and the aquatic habitats of birds while harvesting. This study aimed to examine if knowledge and risk perception of avian influenza influenced the use of protective measures and attitudes about hunting influenza-infected birds among subsistence hunters. METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research approach, a cross-sectional survey was conducted with current subsistence hunte
