Nonlinear EEG signatures of mind wandering during breath focus meditation.

In meditation practices that involve focused attention to a specific object, novice practitioners often experience moments of distraction (i.e., mind wandering). Previous studies have investigated the neural correlates of mind wandering during meditation practice through Electroencephalography (EEG) using linear metrics (e.g., oscillatory power). However, their results are not fully consistent. Since the brain is known to be a chaotic/nonlinear system, it is possible that linear metrics cannot fully capture complex dynamics present in the EEG signal. In this study, we assess whether nonlinear

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Autism Spectrum Disorders: Neuropathological Underpinnings and Clinical Correlations.

Despite growing knowledge about autism spectrum disorder (ASD), research findings have not been translated into curative treatment. At present, most therapeutic interventions provide for symptomatic treatment. Outcomes of interventions are judged by subjective endpoints (eg, behavioral assessments) which alongside the highly heterogeneous nature of ASD account for wide variability in the effectiveness of treatments. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is one of the first treatments that targets a putative core pathologic feature of autism, specifically the cortical inhibitory imbalance tha

Exploratory Study of Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) Real-Time Z-Score Feedback in the Treatment of Pain in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer.

Acute pain from mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiation therapy (RT) is common, and may not respond well to narcotics. We used low resolution electromagnetic tomography z-score neurofeedback (LFBz) to investigate whether patients could modify brain wave activity associated with acute pain and whether this would reduce the experience of pain. HNC patients scheduled for RT had baseline pre-pain onset measures (EEG and numeric rating scale) collected before RT and then at pain onset before using analgesics, after each LFBz session and at the end of RT. Up to six

A pilot treatment study for mild traumatic brain injury: Neuroimaging changes detected by MEG after low-intensity pulse-based transcranial electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a leading cause of sustained impairments in military service members, Veterans, and civilians. However, few treatments are available for mTBI, partially because the mechanism of persistent mTBI deficits is not fully understood. METHODS: We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate neuronal changes in individuals with mTBI following a passive neurofeedback-based treatment programme called IASIS. This programme involved applying low-intensity pulses using transcranial electrical stimulation (LIP-tES) with electroencephalography monitoring

A Clearance-Repair-Activation Framework for Alzheimer's Disease: A Perspective and Validation Roadmap.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous clinicobiological syndrome involving impaired protein clearance, neuroinflammation, synaptic and cellular injury, network dysfunction, and progressive functional decline. Amyloid-directed antibodies provide an evidence-based treatment backbone for selected patients with early symptomatic AD, but adjunctive strategies may be needed to address other disease mechanisms. This Perspective proposes a clearance-repair-activation framework for hypothesis-driven research. Clearance includes established pharmacological treatment and risk management as well as

Closed-loop auditory stimulation in phase with slow waves during sleep enhances cerebrospinal fluid flow in humans.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a key component of healthy brain function, constantly circulating to maintain brain homeostasis. Large waves of CSF flow appear in nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and these CSF flow waves are associated with neural slow waves in the electroencephalogram (EEG). Whether neural slow waves are causally linked to CSF flow, and whether this flow can be enhanced, is not yet established. We developed a technique for performing closed-loop auditory stimulation of sleep slow waves with simultaneous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using real-time denoising and a neural n

A comprehensive exploration of motion sickness process analysis from EEG signal and virtual reality.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Virtual reality motion sickness is a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of virtual reality technology. Current virtual reality motion sickness detection methods using EEG signals often fail to identify comprehensive neuro-markers and lack generalizability across multiple subjects. METHODS: To address this issue, we analyzed the pre- and post-induction phases of virtual reality motion sickness, as well as the induction process, from multiple domain features. The features were extracted from time domain, frequency domain, spatial domain and Riemann space ac

Self-sustained biomimetic bioelectronic accelerated metabolic reprogramming of bone regeneration.

Bionic bioelectronics has promising applications in bone defect repair, with current research primarily focusing on the development of electroactive biomaterials and self-powered systems, which can mimic the electrophysiological microenvironment of natural bone tissue, accelerating bone healing by promoting osteoblast proliferation and differentiation through electrical stimulation. However, the biological mechanisms of bionic electrical stimulation in bone defect repair remain incompletely understood. Here, the study developed a self-sustained biomimetic bioelectronic system comprising a trib

Empathy in schizophrenia: neural alterations during emotion recognition and affective sharing.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in emotion recognition and processing are characteristic for patients with schizophrenia [SCZ]. METHODS: We targeted both emotion recognition and affective sharing, one in static and one in dynamic facial stimuli, during functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI] in 22 SCZ patients and 22 matched healthy controls [HC]. Current symptomatology and cognitive deficits were assessed as potential influencing factors. RESULTS: Behaviorally, patients only showed a prolonged response time in age-discrimination trials. For emotion-processing trials, patients showed a differenc

Brain functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging of obesity and weight loss interventions.

Obesity has tripled over the past 40 years to become a major public health issue, as it is linked with increased mortality and elevated risk for various physical and neuropsychiatric illnesses. Accumulating evidence from neuroimaging studies suggests that obesity negatively affects brain function and structure, especially within fronto-mesolimbic circuitry. Obese individuals show abnormal neural responses to food cues, taste and smell, resting-state activity and functional connectivity, and cognitive tasks including decision-making, inhibitory-control, learning/memory, and attention. Neural affective mechanisms associated with treatment responsiveness in veterans with PTSD and comorbid alcohol use disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with neuro-physiological abnormalities reflecting increased anticipatory anxiety and reactivity to traumatic cues. It remains unclear whether neural mechanisms associated with PTSD treatment responsiveness, i.e. hyperactivation of the affective salience network in the brain, extend to a comorbid PTSD and substance use disorder population. Thirty-one Veterans with PTSD and co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD) were randomly assigned to either prolonged exposure or a non-exposure based treatment. They completed an affective anticipation task

How to Improve Cognitive Flexibility: Evidence From Noninvasive Neuromodulation Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive flexibility (CF) is a core component of executive function that enables humans to adaptively process and respond effectively to diverse and dynamic contextual needs. The execution of CF-related tasks depends on the collective interaction of various neural circuits in essential brain regions, such as the prefrontal, anterior cingulate, and posterior parietal cortices, which support the harmonic and smooth transition of thoughts and perspectives. Therefore, clarifying the mechanism of CF and introducing non-invasive neuromodulatory methods that enhance CF provides a way for

[Biofeedback for headaches].

Biofeedback is a direct feedback of a physiological function. The aim of biofeedback is to change the physiological function into a required direction. To manage this, the physiological function has to be fed back visually or acoustically and it has to be perceived consciously. Biofeedback as a therapeutic practice derives from behavioural therapy and can be used in the context of behavioural interventions. Biofeedback has proved to be successful in non-medical treatment of pain. According to more recent meta-analyses biofeedback reveals high evidence in the treatment of migraine or tension-ty

Online detection of amplitude modulation of motor-related EEG desynchronization using a lock-in amplifier: Comparison with a fast Fourier transform, a continuous wavelet transform, and an autoregressive algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Neurofeedback of event-related desynchronization (ERD) in electroencephalograms (EEG) of the sensorimotor cortex (SM1) using a brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm is a powerful tool to promote motor recovery from post-stroke hemiplegia. However, the feedback delay attenuates the degree of motor learning and neural plasticity. NEW METHOD: The present study aimed to shorten the delay time to estimate amplitude modulation of the motor-imagery-related alpha and beta SM1-ERD using a lock-in amplifier (LIA) algorithm. The delay time was evaluated by calculating the value of the maxi

Characterization of the Sensorimotor Rhythm in 4-Month-Old Infants Born at Term and Premature.

The sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) is an electroencephalographic rhythm associated with motor and cognitive development observed in the central brain regions during wakefulness in the absence of movement, and it reacts contralaterally to generalized and hemibody movements. The purpose of this work was to characterize the SMR of 4-month-old infants, born either healthy at term or prematurely with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). Two groups of infants were formed: healthy and premature with PVL. Their electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded in four conditions: rest, free movement, right-hand gr

Exploring the Feasibility of Bidirectional Control of Beta Oscillatory Power in Healthy Controls as a Potential Intervention for Parkinson's Disease Movement Impairment.

Neurofeedback (NF) is a promising intervention for improvements in motor performance in Parkinson's disease. This NF pilot study in healthy participants aimed to achieve the following: (1) determine participants' ability to bi-directionally modulate sensorimotor beta power and (2) determine the effect of NF on movement performance. A real-time EEG-NF protocol was used to train participants to increase and decrease their individual motor cortex beta power amplitude, using a within-subject double-blind sham-controlled approach. Movement was assessed using a Go/No-go task. Participants completed

Management of long-COVID-19 patients with sleep disorders: practical advice to general practitioners.

Given the high prevalence of sleep disorders (e.g. insomnia) among long-COVID-19 patients (LC19Ps), approaches to tackle these disorders should not only depend on sleep specialists, but they should also involve general practitioners (GPs). Indeed, according to the World Health Organization, GPs should be on the front line in the management of LC19Ps. However, in real practice, little data with regard to the management of LC19Ps are available for GPs, which represents an embarrassing situation. Thus, the main aim of this correspondence was to provide GPs with some advice related to the manageme
