What participants understand about a maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein screening program.

We investigated the knowledge of pregnant women participating in a maternal serum alphafetoprotein (MSAFP) screening program for the detection of neural tube defects (NTDs) in the fetus. Women participating in the screening program scored higher on two knowledge tests than a comparison group of pregnant women who were not offered screening. However, there were substantial gaps in the knowledge base of women in the program, as measured by one of the tests. Women did not misinterpret a negative test result to mean that the test had identified a potential problem with the fetus; instead, there is

Patient reported barriers and facilitators to using a self-management booklet for hip and knee osteoarthritis in primary care: results of a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: To enhance guideline-based non-surgical management of hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA), a multidisciplinary, stepped-care strategy has been implemented in primary care in a region of the Netherlands. To facilitate this implementation, the self-management booklet "Care for Osteoarthritis" was developed and introduced. The aim of the booklet was to educate patients about OA, to enhance the patient's active role in the treatment course, and to improve the communication with health care providers. To successfully introduce the booklet on a large scale we assessed barriers and facilitato

Co-design of resources to support researchers to develop accessible and inclusive patient information leaflets for randomised controlled trials: the UK-based MAPLE project.

BACKGROUND: Low English language literacy and diverse communication needs are widespread in the UK. Provision of lengthy and complex patient information leaflets (PILs) for clinical trials can impose a barrier to research participation. Inclusive research design incorporates providing clear and accessible written information, often in a layered approach. This project aimed to co-design resources to support researchers to create visual, inclusive, and accessible PILs for randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Nineteen public and community involvement and engagement co-design workshops w

Effectiveness of a psycho-educational intervention for expecting parents to prevent postpartum parenting stress, depression and anxiety: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The first months postpartum can be challenging for parents, leading to elevated symptoms of parenting stress, depression and anxiety. In turn, distressed parents are at higher risk for providing suboptimal quality of caregiving. As psychoeducational interventions can be effective in reducing psychological distress, the goal of this randomized controlled trial was to examine the effectiveness of low-intensity universal psychoeducational program to prevent postpartum parenting stress, and to enhance parental well-being and caregiving quality. METHOD: Between 26 and 34 weeks of pregn

Low awareness of venous thromboembolism among neurosurgical hospitalized patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) including Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), is a serious cause of patient morbidity and mortality in hospitals. Neurosurgical hospitalized patients have higher rates of immobility and bed rest, thus increasing their risk of developing VTE. This highlights the need for their thromboprophylaxis regimens. Patients' awareness of VTE is essential for promoting strategies such as early ambulation and encouraging self-assessment and self-reporting of VTE signs and symptoms. This study evaluated neurosurgical hospitalized patients' aware

Design of a randomized clinical trial of a colorectal cancer screening decision aid to promote appropriate screening in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate colorectal cancer screening in older adults should be aligned with the likelihood of net benefit. In general, patient decision aids improve knowledge and values clarity, but in older adults, they may also help patients identify their individual likelihood of benefit and foster individualized decision-making. We report on the design of a randomized clinical trial to understand the effects of a patient decision aid on appropriate colorectal cancer screening. This report includes a description of the baseline characteristics of participants. METHODS: English-speaking prim

Preliminary Evaluation of Educational Outreach to Promote Colorectal Cancer Screening Among South Asians in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Culturally-tailored interventions increase rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in diverse populations. South Asian Americans have very low rates of CRC screening. Targeted interventions may improve community awareness and likelihood of undergoing screening. We identified and recruited multiple South Asian-serving community and religious centers to conduct South Asian physician-led presentations about CRC screening. A post-presentation survey tool was used to evaluate CRC screening history, intent to screen, and acceptance of a tailored brochure. In a convenience sample of 103 surveys, m

Shared decision-making in the care of individuals with diabetes.

People with diabetes often live with other chronic conditions and lead complicated lives. Determining what is the best management decision for a patient requires consideration of each individual's personal, social and biomedical context, what he or she values, the reasons he or she has to value the available options, and the relative contribution of each option in terms of benefits, harms, costs and inconveniences. Empathic conversations between patients and clinicians to diagnose the patient situation that necessitates action and the range of evidence-based actions that best address the situa
