The Canary Islands contain the most important dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) population in the European Union and are the main export point of dromedaries to continental Europe and Latin America. We investigated the presence of antibodies against relevant disease agents in 100 Canarian camel sera. Selected blood samples of the same animals were also tested by PCR. Sera were tested for antibodies against Bluetongue virus (BTV; 0%), Bovine Viral Diarrhoea virus (BVDV; 0%), Camelpox virus (CPV; 8% by serum neutralization, 16% by ELISA), Peste des Petits Ruminants virus (PPRV, 0%), Rift Val

Mycobacterium avium causes disseminated disease in humans with AIDS, paratuberculosis in ruminants, lymphadenopathy in swine, and tuberculosis in birds. We constructed DNA vaccines expressing mycobacterial antigens as fusion proteins with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). Plasmids p65K-EGFP, p85A-EGFP, and p85B-EGFP expressed the M. avium 65-kDa antigen, the Mycobacterium bovis BCG 85A antigen, and the M. avium 85B antigen, respectively, as EGFP fusion proteins. We visualized protein expression directly in cultured murine fibroblasts and intact muscle. p65K-EGFP expressed fusion prote

A revision is made on the important biological phenomenon of microbial emergency, based on model infection diseases in which the author can give the own experimental results and experience. The concept of microbial emergency has shocked the traditional infectious epidemiology since 1983 when the HIV virus was discovered and the informatic network reached an optimum efficiency. In despite of the global risk of contagion it is necessary to consider the proximity effect in a space-time model as the main cause of infectious diseases diffusion.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises mainly Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The Western model suggests that environmental factors, immunological factors, the gut microbiome, and genetic disposition all contribute to the onset and sustained symptoms that define CD, although the pathogenesis of CD remains unresolved. Current studies propose that in individuals who are genetically susceptible, genetic factors linked to immune dysregulation, in combination with environmental exposure, can result in dysbiosis of the gut microbiome and intestinal barrier dysfunction, leading

Water buffalo exhibit low mortality rates and high resistance to pathogens. They are less susceptible to developing diseases common in other bovids; however, they are susceptible to various bacterial agents and hemoparasites. Although buffalo are relatively resistant to the clinical form of many diseases, they can serve as reservoirs for various pathogens, facilitating their spread to other susceptible species, which is particularly relevant in a One Health perspective. This review compiles information on economically important infectious diseases affecting buffalo herds, including bacterial i

UNLABELLED: In clinical practice, inappropriate diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) ascribing the disease to Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP) and resulting mistreatment has been a challenge for healthcare workers. This highlights the need to accurately identify and characterize MAP members in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) ulceration. A total of 889 patients exhibiting symptoms of IBD were examined for MAP infection. While MAP was not recovered from any of the specimens, we successfully isolated and sequenced four clinically relevant Mycobacterium intracellulare genome

SPS is characterized by progressive spasmodic muscular rigidity. SPS is thought to be an autoimmune disease with a prominent feature of antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). GAD is responsible for the enzymatic conversion of glutamic acid (glutamate) into the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Reduced GABA activity leads to increased excitability in the central nervous system, resulting in muscle rigidity and spasms characteristic of SPS. While SPS is rare, anti-GAD antibodies seen in SPS are also seen in the much more common autoimmune disease, type 1

This review article is written to describe the results of ultrasonography of the kidneys in healthy camels as well as camels with some renal disorders. In the dromedary camel, the physiology of the kidney is of interest in view of the specialization of the camel to hot dry deserts and to prolonged periods without water. It plays an important role in water conservation through the production of highly concentrated urine that may predispose animal to varieties of renal disorders. Examples of kidney affections in dromedary camels are renal capsular pigmentation, medullary hyperemia, subcapsular c

The role that wildlife may play in the transmission of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map), the causative agent of Johne's disease (JD), and the potential consequences of infection in these populations are being given increasing consideration. A yearling male Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) from southwestern Alberta, Canada, was found infected with Map in August 2009. Clinical signs of emaciation and diarrhea and histologic findings of diffuse granulomatous enteritis of the distal ileum, lymphadenitis of the mesenteric lymph nodes, and lymphangitis o

This paper describes the most significant diseases of farmed deer which have emerged over the last 30 or so years. It describes their characteristic signs, how control measures have evolved, their current status and gives an indication of future diagnostic and control measures. Overall, it shows that wild deer brought into a farming environment have developed some of the production limiting diseases which affect sheep and cattle, such as parasitism and trace element deficiencies. In addition, farmed deer are susceptible to potentially fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, malignant catarrhal fe

Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella, requires rapid, accurate, and sensitive diagnostic methods for effective prevention and control. This study presents the development of a fluorescence microsphere immunochromatographic assay (QDMs-ICA) for detecting anti-Brucella antibodies in bovine serum and milk. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the Brucella abortus strain A19 was immobilized on the nitrocellulose membrane (NC membrane) as the test line (T-line), while rabbit anti-SPG polyclonal antibody was applied as the control line (C-line). Recombinant streptococcal protein G conjugated

Six captive adult swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), aged between 2 and 11 years, including five females and a single male, presented with non-specific clinical signs including lethargy and loss of body condition, ultimately leading to their euthanasia. Ante-mortem haematology and biochemistry identified anaemia in two cases and increased blood urea nitrogen in one case. Ante-mortem radiography identified multiple, variably mineralized visceral nodules in the liver of two animals and lytic lesions of the right scapula in one case and the right femoral neck in another. Post-mortem examination

Mycobacteriophage Mcgavigan could be a promising candidate for use as a preventative agent against infections with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Bioinformatic analysis of the Mcgavigan genome revealed the presence of an operon containing a "Bxb1-like" repressor. The operon may have been acquired by the phage through horizontal gene transfer with a Bxb1-like mycobacteriophage in its evolutionary past. We sought to investigate the function of the acquired repressor as a potential regulator of lysogeny or as a source of heterotypic superinfection immunity. Recombineering with CRISP

Bovine pasteurellosis, caused by serogroups A, B, and E of Pasteurella multocida (Pm), is mainly manifested as bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and hemorrhagic septicemia (HS). The disease has caused a great economic loss for the cattle industry globally. Therefore, identifying the Pm serogroups is critical for optimal diagnosis and subsequent clinical treatment and even epidemiological studies. In this study, a one-step multiplex real-time PCR assay was established. Three pairs of specific primers were prepared to detect the highly conserved genomic regions of serogroups A (HyaD), B (bcbD), a

Since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in the world, many countries have searched for quick diagnostic tools to detect the virus. There are many ways to design diagnostic assays; however, each may have its limitations. A quick, sensitive, specific, and simple approach is essential for highly rapidly transmitted infections, such as SARS-CoV-2. This study aimed to develop a rapid and cost-effective diagnostic tool using a one-step Reverse Transcriptase Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) approach. The results were observed using the naked eye within 30-60 min using turbidity or colori

In the last half century, significant attention has been given to animal diseases; however, our understanding of disease processes and how to manage them at the livestock-wildlife interface remains limited. In this study, we conduct a systematic review of the scientific literature to evaluate the status of diseases at the livestock-wildlife interface in the United States. Specifically, the goals of the literature review were three fold: first to evaluate domestic animal diseases currently found in the United States where wildlife may play a role; second to identify critical issues faced in man

Sarcoidosis, once thought to be a variant of tuberculosis, is currently listed as a disease of unknown etiology. The present study was initiated by unpublished observations that Schaumann bodies-the laminated inclusions often encountered in sarcoid granulomas-cross-reacted with commercial polyclonal antibodies to Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium duvalii and Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Given the broad cross-reactivity of many mycobacterial antigens, those findings lacked specificity but warranted in depth probing of the immunoprofile of the bodies, particularly for specific mycobacterial
