Evaluating Dog Preference Between Artificial and Natural Turf Grasses.

Dog parks are widely used recreational spaces for human-dog interaction, yet there is little empirical data about how surface materials influence dogs' behavior and welfare. This study evaluated dogs' behavior on three surfaces commonly used in outdoor dog recreation areas. Ten dogs (N = 10) participated in ten structured play sessions in an experimental area with unrestricted access to all surfaces. The testing area consisted of a 12.2 m2 playground divided into nine plots of equal size. Each plot was randomly assigned a surface material (i.e., natural grass, stabilized grass, or artificial t

Effect of mosquito lures and location types on the abundance of mosquitoes collected using Black Hole light traps at different collection periods.

Mosquito-borne diseases are considered a concern by the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. Carbon dioxide (CO2)- and host-odor-based lures have been evaluated individually for their effectiveness in attracting mosquitoes. This study addressed a gap in mosquito surveillance by comparing 3 potential lures (yeast-generated CO2, BG-lure, and KU-lure) with UV-LED light traps at Kasetsart University, Bangkok, considering the effects of location types and collection periods. Over 48 trap-nights, a total of 1,713 mosquitoes were collected across 4 subsites (2 per location type: recreational park and

The role of deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) in occupational and public health.

Deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) are bloodsucking arthropods that primarily feed on deer (family Cervidae) but can occasionally bite humans. The knowledge of their potential harm to wildlife, livestock, and pets is fragmentary. These ectoparasites have been historically understudied, as they were only considered nuisances to various occupational groups and the public. However, there is also mounting evidence that they may be pathogen vectors as several infectious disease agents, including Acinetobacter, Anaplasma, Bartonella, Borrelia, Coxiella, Francisella, Mycop

Comparison of Poisson and Bernoulli spatial cluster analyses of pediatric injuries in a fire district.

BACKGROUND: With limited resources available, injury prevention efforts need to be targeted both geographically and to specific populations. As part of a pediatric injury prevention project, data was obtained on all pediatric medical and injury incidents in a fire district to evaluate geographical clustering of pediatric injuries. This will be the first step in attempting to prevent these injuries with specific interventions depending on locations and mechanisms. RESULTS: There were a total of 4803 incidents involving patients less than 15 years of age that the fire district responded to duri

Neighborhood obesogenic factors and breast cancer risk and mortality in the Southern community cohort study.

Obesity is an established risk factor for many cancers, including breast cancer. However, the complex nature of the underlying mechanisms, coupled with the interaction between individual characteristics and neighborhood obesogenic attributes, contributes to an energy imbalance and a sedentary lifestyle, promoting obesity. This has posed a challenge to our understanding of neighborhood obesogenic attributes associated with this increased risk of breast cancer. We aim to examine how neighborhood attributes affect breast cancer risk and prognosis in the Southern Community Cohort Study (SCCS). We

Assessment of Antibiotic Levels, Multi-Drug Resistant Bacteria and Genetic Biomarkers in the Waters of the Rio Grande River Between the United States-Mexico Border.

BACKGROUND: The worldwide emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria has become a health crisis, as fewer or sometimes no antimicrobial agents are effective against these bacteria. The Rio Grande River is the natural boundary between the United States (US) and Mexico. It spans a border region between Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. Underserved populations on the Mexican side use the river for recreational purposes, while on the US side, the river is used for irrigation and as a source of drinking water. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the concentration of antibiotic

Incident Tick-Borne Infections in a Cohort of North Carolina Outdoor Workers.

Tick-borne diseases cause substantial morbidity throughout the United States, and North Carolina has a high incidence of spotted fever rickettsioses and ehrlichiosis, with sporadic cases of Lyme disease. The occupational risk of tick-borne infections among outdoor workers is high, particularly those working on publicly managed lands. This study identified incident tick-borne infections and examined seroconversion risk factors among a cohort of North Carolina outdoor workers. Workers from the North Carolina State Divisions of Forestry, Parks and Recreation, and Wildlife (n = 159) were followed

Alternative Locales for the Health Promotion of African American Men: A Survey of African American Men in Chicago Barbershops.

African American men (AA) carry unequal burdens of several conditions including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and HIV. Engagement of diverse populations including AA men in research and health promotion practice is vital to examining the health disparities that continue to plague many racially and ethnically diverse communities. To date, there is little research on best practices that indicate locations, community areas and settings to engage AA men in research and health promotion. Traditionally, the AA church has been a key area to engage AA men and women. However, changing tides in attend

Hospital accounting and information systems: a critical assessment.

Public sector organisations seem to be caught up in the global wave of 'neo-Thatcherism'. As such, they are being held 'accountable' today by their respective government finance departments for the costs and benefits of the services they provide to the general public. As the public purse tightens, hospitals (and related health service units) more and more compete with other public sector organisations (old-age pensions and services, post-secondary education, day-care centres, port authorities, unemployment insurance, parks and recreation, elite sport programs, aboriginal peoples aid and develo

Hematological and plasma profiles and ticks and tick-borne pathogens in wild Formosan black bears (Ursus thibetanus formosanus).

BACKGROUND: The endangered Formosan black bear (Ursus thibetanus formosanus) is the largest native carnivorous mammal in Taiwan. Diseases, poor management, illegal hunting, and habitat destruction are serious threats to the survival of bear populations. However, studies on the impact of diseases on bear populations are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to establish a database of the hematological and plasma profiles of free-ranging Formosan black bears and investigate the occurrence of ectoparasites, blood parasites, and vector-borne pathogens. METHODS: Formosan black bears were captured i

Free Summer Programming and Body Mass Index Among Schoolchildren From Low-Income Households: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Children experience accelerated gains in body mass index (BMI) during the summer months when school is not in session. Children from low-income households are most susceptible. Accelerated BMI gain in summer may be due to the removal of the health-promoting structure provided by schools. During summer, a common form of health-promoting structure is summer day camps (SDCs). Summer day camps are predominately fee for service, which creates a financial barrier for children from low-income households. One solution to mitigate accelerated BMI gain is providing free access to an existing

Cannabis in Hematology Survey Study (CHESS): A Longitudinal Investigation on Uses, Attitudes, and Outcomes of Cannabis Among Hematology Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant.

Cancer patients use cannabis for medicinal purposes; however, few studies have examined hematology patients' use of cannabis and no research to our knowledge has investigated the use of cannabis amongst hematology patients before and after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT). The purpose of this longitudinal survey study was to assess aspects of cannabis use in patients who underwent HCT. Eligible patients (N = 30) completed two surveys before and 90 days following their HCT. The surveys inquired about several aspects of cannabis (e.g., rate of use, beliefs and attitudes, access to inform
