Outbreak of salmonellosis in a zoologic collection of lorikeets and lories (Trichoglossus, Lorius, and Eos spp.).

During August 2001, a syndrome characterized by acute lethargy and dyspnea was observed in a population of 45 lorikeets and lories in an open-air zoologic exhibit. The first death occurred on August 10, and within the next 12 days, nine more birds died (22% mortality rate). Hepatomegaly, reddening and congestion of the lungs, and injection of the serosal surface of the intestines were the common gross findings. Histologic changes, including fibrinonecrotic hepatitis and splenitis, bacterial emboli (liver, spleen, lung, kidney, proventriculus), pulmonary congestion and hemorrhage, and enteritis

Plaque formation by and plaque cloning of Chlamydia trachomatis biovar trachoma.

A new technique for the induction of plaque formation by Chlamydia trachomatis biovar trachoma applicable to the titration of infectivity and cloning of biovar trachoma was established. Three novel strains were cloned and confirmed to be free of glycogen inclusions. The lack of glycogen accumulation correlated with the absence of a 7.5-kb plasmid, which is highly conserved in other strains of C. trachomatis. Although the growth efficiency of these plasmid-free strains was slightly lower than that of plasmid-positive strains, possession of the plasmid and glycogen accumulation were not essentia

Editorial Commentary: Urgency Toward Arthroscopic Bankart Repair Is Essential for Anterior Shoulder Dislocation: You Don't Have to Fix After the First Dislocation, but Definitely Before the Second!

While still hotly debated, primary arthroscopic management of the first-time anterior shoulder dislocation has an extensive list of known benefits: lower overall health care costs, improved patient-reported outcomes, a vast reduction in secondary instability, and higher quality-of-life measures. Yet, despite these meaningful contributions to health care quality, we continue to bypass the predictable success of an acute arthroscopic Bankart repair in order to tempt fate with "a trial" of nonoperative care for our young, high-risk collision athletes. Whether for the in-season athlete, the "early

Pollybeak deformity: how to avoid, how to cure.

We reviewed the Pollybeak deformity from prevention to treatment in all aspects. Research methods included searching online databases such as Google, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Proquest Central at King Saud University. We used terms like "Pollybeak deformity", "rhinoplasty", "etiology", and "treatment" to find related articles. Pollybeak deformity, an undesirable side effect of rhinoplasty, manifests as a dorsal nasal convexity resembling a parrot's beak. A dorsal hump that develops in the supratip region of the nose "pushes" the tip down, leading to under-rotation. Several factors may be at

Species Composition of Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and Modeling the Spatial Distribution of Main Vectors of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Hormozgan Province, Southern Iran.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the main neglected vector-borne diseases in the Middle East, including Iran. This study aimed to map the spatial distribution and species composition of sand flies in Hormozgan Province and to predict the best ecological niches for main CL vectors in this area. A database that included all earlier studies on sand flies in Hormozgan Province was established. Sand flies were also collected from some localities across the province. Prediction maps for main vectors were developed using MaxEnt model. A total of 27 sand fly species were reported from the study

Nail involvement in systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Nail involvement has rarely been recognized in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Indeed, only a few small series have assessed nail changes in SSc, most of which are case reports. OBJECTIVE: The aims of the current case-control study were to: (1) determine the prevalence of fingernail changes in SSc; and (2) evaluate the correlation between fingernail changes and other features of SSc. METHODS: In all, 129 patients with SSc and 80 healthy control subjects underwent routine fingernail examination. RESULTS: The prevalence of fingernail changes was 80.6% in SSc. Patients with SSc more freq

Sergentomyia spp.: breeding sites in vertisols and peri-domestic habitats in North West Ethiopia.

Sand flies belonging to the genus Sergentomyia Franca & Parrot, 1920, are hematophagous insects feeding mostly on reptiles and birds, but some species feed also on mammals including humans. Sergentomyia spp. frequently comprise the vast majority of sand flies trapped along with Phlebotomus spp., the vectors of mammalian leishmaniasis. Within the framework of a project on the ecology and transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in Ethiopia, putative breeding sites of phlebotomine sand flies were studied. Large horizontal sticky traps (LHSTs) covered with sand fly-proof mesh were deployed over cra

Convergent differential regulation of SLIT-ROBO axon guidance genes in the brains of vocal learners.

Only a few distantly related mammals and birds have the trait of complex vocal learning, which is the ability to imitate novel sounds. This ability is critical for speech acquisition and production in humans, and is attributed to specialized forebrain vocal control circuits that have several unique connections relative to adjacent brain circuits. As a result, it has been hypothesized that there could exist convergent changes in genes involved in neural connectivity of vocal learning circuits. In support of this hypothesis, expanding on our related study (Pfenning et al. [2014] Science 346: 125

Morphometric and molecular differentiation of Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) sandflies.

The closely related sandfly species of the subgenus Phlebotomus namely, Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786), Phlebotomus duboscqi Neveu-Lemair, 1906 and Phlebotomus bergeroti Parrot, 1934 (Diptera: Psychodidae), are major vectors of Leishmania major (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Old World. Although allopatric in most of their distribution, the three species exist sympatrically in many places in central and eastern Sudan. Males of the three species can be distinguished using morphological characters; however, females are much harder t

Overresection of the lower lateral cartilages: a common conceptual mistake with functional and aesthetic consequences.

BACKGROUND: Overresection of the lower lateral cartilages to narrow the tip in individuals with thick skin is a common mistake with functional and aesthetic consequences. The most frequent deformities are external valve dysfunction, alar retraction, alar pinch, tip asymmetry, lack of tip definition, and parrot beak deformity resulting from drooping of the tip. METHODS: In 82 patients who underwent revision surgery from 1998 to 2007 the lower lateral cartilages were missing. To restore function of the external nasal valve and correct aesthetic deformities it is essential to rebuild the anatomi

Natural ecotopes of Triatoma infestans dark morph and other sylvatic triatomines in the Bolivian Chaco.

A survey of natural ecotopes of Triatoma infestans dark morph and other triatomine sylvatic species was performed in an uninhabited area of the Bolivian Chaco. Among the 321 triatomines collected by light trapping, only 4 T. infestans dark morph specimens were identified. Predominant flying species were T. guasayana and T. sordida group 2 (51.7% and 37.1% of capture, respectively). The same species prevailed in terrestrial and epiphytic bromeliads where scarce T. infestans dark morph nymphal instars were also detected. In parrot nests T. delpontei prevailed broadly over other species (90.2% of
