Psychiatric Comorbidities and the Risk of Suicide in Obsessive-Compulsive and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder that is characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are uncontrollable distressful thoughts. Compulsions are recurrent behaviors or thoughts performed in an attempt to decrease the anxiety of the obsessions. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental disorder characterized by a distressful preoccupation with a perceived defect in appearance. The perceived flaw in appearance is minimal or unnoticed by others. BDD was considered an anxiety disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourt

Implementation of a dissonance-based, eating disorder prevention program in Southern, all-female high schools.

Adolescence represents a high-risk period for eating disorder development, and there is great need for effective prevention programs targeted at this population. The Body Project, a dissonance-based eating disorder prevention program, has robust literature showing reductions in body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptoms. However, many additional factors (i.e., comorbid symptoms, transdiagnostic factors) have not yet been examined in relation to the Body Project. Additionally, there is little known about how to most effectively and broadly disseminate this intervention. The current study

Disordered eating behaviors among Christian and Muslim adolescents in Ceuta, a multicultural town.

Studies on disordered eating behaviors (DEB) in multicultural populations with multiple religious/cultural affiliations are needed in order to clarify the relationship between cultural background and DEB. Therefore, we compared the presence of DEB among Christian and Muslim adolescents who share their school environment, controlling for the effect of body mass index, demographic variables and lifestyle habits. A sample of 493 girls and boys (339 Christian, 138 Muslim) whose mean (±SD) age was 14.8 (±1.7) years completed self-reporting questionnaires and underwent measurements of anthropometric

Hemodynamic responses in prefrontal cortex and personality characteristics in patients with bulimic disorders: a near-infrared spectroscopy study.

PURPOSE: This study sought to identify the prefrontal cortex hemodynamic response that is dependent on cognitive performance in patients with bulimic disorders (BD), and investigate its association with personality characteristics. METHODS: Nineteen female patients with BD and 23 healthy women were recruited. Their personality characteristics related to eating disorders were examined using a self-reporting questionnaire, namely the eating disorder inventory-2 (EDI-2). Cerebral blood flow response in the prefrontal cortex during the digit span backward task (DSBT) was measured using near-infra

Psychosocial risk factors for eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: One goal in identifying psychosocial risk factors is to discover opportunities for intervention. The purpose of this review is to examine psychosocial risk factors for disordered eating, placing research findings in the larger context of how etiological models for eating disorders can be transformed into models for intervention. METHOD: A qualitative literature review was conducted focusing on psychological and social factors that increase the risk for developing eating disorders, with an emphasis on well-replicated findings from prospective longitudinal studies. RESULTS: Epidemio

Childhood obsessive-compulsive personality traits in adult women with eating disorders: defining a broader eating disorder phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: The authors retrospectively examined a spectrum of childhood traits that reflect obsessive-compulsive personality in adult women with eating disorders and assessed the predictive value of the traits for the development of eating disorders. METHOD: In a case-control design, 44 women with anorexia nervosa, 28 women with bulimia nervosa, and 28 healthy female comparison subjects were assessed with an interview instrument that asked them to recall whether they had experienced various types of childhood behavior suggesting traits associated with obsessive-compulsive personality. The sub

Neuroendocrine, appetitive and behavioural responses to d-fenfluramine in women recovered from anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Increased central serotonin (5-HT) function has been hypothesised to be a vulnerability trait in anorexia nervosa. METHODS: Eighteen women with a history of DSM-III-R anorexia nervosa and 18 female controls were examined. The subjects had recovered weight and menstrual function. A placebo-controlled d-fenfluramine test was used. Subjects ingested d-fenfluramine or placebo and after three hours were offered a 'free' meal. The amounts eaten were recorded and plasma cortisol and prolactin levels were measured. Questionnaires related to eating attitudes and behaviour, to personality,

Self-Efficacy as a Common Pathway: How Non-Cognitive Individual Differences Shape Academic Procrastination.

Academic procrastination is a widespread self-regulatory failure among university students and a costly one for both academic achievement and psychological well-being. In this study, procrastination was examined within the framework of non-cognitive individual differences. The model tested here posits that perfectionism and locus of control affect procrastination through negative automatic thoughts and general self-efficacy. These variable-centered analyses were then complemented with a person-centered approach in order to capture distinct risk profiles. Cross-sectional data were collected fro

Examining Associations Between Low MMPI-3 Disconstraint Scale Scores and Facets of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality.

The Personality Psychopathology Five (PSY-5) trait Disconstraint is a personality dimension associated with behavioral control. Conceptualizations of this construct posit under-controlled, antisocial personality and over-controlled, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) features to manifest at its high and low poles, respectively. Robust empirical support has been reported for the posited high-end manifestations of this trait, as measured across versions of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) by the Disconstraint (DISC) scale. Empirical findings related to low-end

Case Report: Motivational ambivalence and family dynamics in severe adolescent anorexia nervosa treated in a Mexican multidisciplinary setting.

This case report describes the clinical course of two adolescent females (ages 12 and 14) with severe restrictive-type anorexia nervosa (AN) and comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms. Both presented with extreme malnutrition (BMI-for-age <1st percentile), amenorrhea, distorted body image, and marked ambivalence toward weight restoration. Their families, characterized as structured, were engaged with the treatment. Care involved short-term hospitalization followed by intensive outpatient multidisciplinary treatment integrating cognitive-behavioral and dialectical behavior therapy strategies,

Orthorexia nervosa: assessment, prevalence, high-risk groups, co-occurring features and management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthesizes research on orthorexia nervosa published in 2025 and early 2026. RECENT FINDINGS: Orthorexia nervosa is characterized by an excessive focus on healthy eating. Widely used measures, particularly the ORTO-15, have been criticized for poor reliability, prompting the development of new assessment instruments. Recent prevalence estimates of orthorexia nervosa vary widely. Meta-analyses based on ORTO-15 assessment in highly heterogeneous settings suggest an overall prevalence of 27.5%, with men and women equally at risk. However, more recent studies indica

Decoding the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on anorexia nervosa psychopathology: A network comparison of pre- and post-pandemic onset.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted anorexia nervosa (AN), increasing pressure on healthcare services and causing specific psychopathological changes. However, the characterization of changes in presentation patterns across the pandemic remains unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by comparing symptom networks in patients with pre- and post-pandemic AN onset. Data from 189 patients diagnosed with AN from 2016 to 2022 were analyzed. Patients were divided into pre-COVID (n = 101) and post-COVID (n = 88) onset groups. Network analysis was employed to examine interconnections am

Multiple paths to rumination within a network analytical framework.

Theories of rumination have proposed different psychological factors to place one at risk for repetitive negative thinking. A comprehensive empirical test that captures the most relevant contributors to rumination is lacking. Building on influential self-regulatory and metacognitive frameworks, we modeled how key constructs in this context relate to ruminative thinking. 498 participants completed online questionnaires including indicators of rumination, metacognition, promotion goal orientation, effortful control, and depression. We estimated regularized partial correlation networks to investi

Exploring the Associations of Personality and Sexual Health Using the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders.

This study explored the relationships between sexual health indicators (i.e., sexual satisfaction, distress, and function) and the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, a promising dimensional framework for assessing personality pathology. A sample of 489 participants seeking help in private practice clinics completed self-report measures of sexual satisfaction, distress, and function, as well as dyadic adjustment, psychological distress, romantic attachment, personality impairment, and pathological personality facets. Results first showed that participants reaching the cutoffs fo

Obsessive belief and emotional appraisal correlates of symptom dimensions and impairment in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous and debilitating illness. Symptom dimensions of OCD lend homogeneous avenues for research. Variations in one's appraisal of thoughts and emotions can influence symptom dimensions and impairment. However, little is known about the combined influence of these appraisals in OCD. A clear understanding of these relationships has putative treatment implications. AIM: The aim of the study is to examine the associations among obsessive beliefs, emotional appraisals, and OCD symptom dimensions in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We exam

The Role of Individual and Social Variables in Predicting Body Dissatisfaction and Eating Disorder Symptoms among Iranian Adolescent Girls: An Expanding of the Tripartite Influence Mode.

The aim of the present study was to examine the causal relationships between psychological and social factors, being independent variables and body image dissatisfaction plus symptoms of eating disorders as dependent variables through the mediation of social comparison and thin-ideal internalization. To conduct the study, 477 high-school students from Tehran were recruited by method of cluster sampling. Next, they filled out Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES), Physical Appearance Comparison Scale (PACS), Self-Concept Clarity Scale (SCCS), Appearance Perfectionism Scale (APS), Eating Disorder I

Increased anterior cingulate cortex response precedes behavioural adaptation in anorexia nervosa.

Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) are characterised by increased self-control, cognitive rigidity and impairments in set-shifting, but the underlying neural mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to elucidate the neural correlates of behavioural adaptation to changes in reward contingencies in young acutely ill AN patients. Thirty-six adolescent/young adult, non-chronic female AN patients and 36 age-matched healthy females completed a well-established probabilistic reversal learning task during fMRI. We analysed hemodynamic responses in em

Attachment and eating disorders: a review of current research.

OBJECTIVE: Attachment insecurity may confer risk for developing an eating disorder. We describe domains of attachment functioning that are relevant to eating disorders including: affect regulation, interpersonal style, coherence of mind, and reflective functioning. Research since 2000 on attachment and eating disorders related to these domains is reviewed. METHOD: We searched MedLine/Pubmed and PsycINFO from January 2000 to February 2014 and kept articles that: were empirical, included adults with a diagnosed eating disorder, and used a standard attachment measure. We retained 50 relevant stu
