Long-term measurement of binaural intensity and pitch matches. II. Fluctuating low-frequency hearing loss.

Thirteen subjects made consecutive long-term recordings of binaural intensity and pitch matches in their homes using portable equipment to assess hearing fluctuations. Two groups of subjects were used; one with monaural fluctuating low-frequency hearing loss (FLFHL) without vertigo, and one with monaural Meniere's disease (i.e. FLFHL with vertigo). The subjects measured binaural pitch matches using a 0.25- or 1-kHz reference tone presented at 60 dB SPL to one ear, and a loudness-matched test tone of adjustable frequency presented to the other ear during one to several weeks. Their results were

Binaural interaction revisited in the cat primary auditory cortex.

The binaural interactions of neurons were studied in the primary auditory cortex (AI) of barbiturate-anesthetized cats with a matrix of binaural tonal stimuli varying in both interaural level differences (ILD) and average binaural level (ABL). The purpose of this study was to determine: 1) the distribution of preferred binaural combinations (PBCs) of a large population of neurons and its relationships with binaural interactions and binaural monotonicity; 2) whether monaural responses are predictive of binaural responses; and 3) whether there is a restricted set of representative binaural stimu

Contralateral induction by frequency spectrum in hallucinating schizophrenics.

Seventeen schizophrenic patients who had all experienced auditory hallucinations were compared with 14 subjects of a reference group on a test of contralateral induction. Contralateral induction means that a sound is illusively heard as coming from a location where it belongs according to its spectral content. The phenomenon is connected with a simultaneous relative elimination of masking. The schizophrenic subjects deviated from the reference group in several aspects. Some of them did not hear the sound being induced to the contralateral side, which it was for all reference subjects. Another

NoSo and NoS pi detection as a function of masker bandwidth in normal-hearing and cochlear-impaired listeners.

NoSo and NoS pi detection thresholds for a 500-Hz pure-tone signal were measured as a function of masking noise bandwidth in normal-hearing and cochlear hearing-impaired subjects. NoSo and NoS pi critical bands were derived from the bandlimited noise functions. A notched noise measure of the monaural critical band was also obtained for each ear. One hypothesis tested was that an asymmetrical monaural critical band would result in a relatively steep improvement of the NoS pi detection threshold as a function of decreasing masker bandwidth and would, therefore, be associated with a wider binaura

Disparity in the cytocochleogram and the electrocochleogram in aging LP/J and A/J inbred mice.

The auditory systems of aging LP/J and A/J inbred mice were studied using electrocochleography (AP thresholds) and surface preparation cytocochleography. Both strains showed marked age-related auditory threshold elevation, the LP/J demonstrating more pronounced elevation with age than the A/J. Surprisingly, the cytocochleograms showed the opposite relationship: the A/J strain had more loss of hair cells than the LP/J. The elevation of AP thresholds of the LP/J mouse was far out of proportion to the expected auditory deficit on the basis of the cytocochleogram alone. Auditory deficits in the ag

Mismatch negativity reveals plasticity in cortical dynamics after 1-hour of auditory training exercises.

BACKGROUND: Impaired sensory processing contributes to deficits in cognitive and psychosocial functioning in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ). Mismatch Negativity (MMN), an event-related potential (ERP) index of sensory discrimination associated with cognitive and psychosocial functioning, is a candidate biomarker of auditory discrimination and thus possibly of changes following auditory-based Targeted Cognitive Training (TCT). Here we evaluated the acute effect of TCT on cortical processes supporting auditory discrimination. METHODS: MMN was assessed in 28 SZ outpatients before and after

Medial olivocochlear reflex in ankylosing spondylitis patients.

OBJECTIVE: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease. Via autoimmune mediators, AS can damage the auditory system similar to other systems. Otoacoustic emission studies in AS patients showed that the damage that causes hearing loss was in the outer hair cells. The medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex is used to evaluate the MOC efferent system (MOES), which includes the outer hair cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of subclinical damage in the inner ear with the aid of the MOC reflex test in AS patients with no hearing complaints. PATIENTS AND

[Diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops with low tone masked otoacoustic emissions].

BACKGROUND: A new method of diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops by recording low-tone masked evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) is presented. METHODS: A short acoustic stimulus and a masker tone of 30 Hz are applied in an adjustable phase relation simultaneously to the same ear. In the normal hearing ear the masker shows little influence on the TEOAE at 0 degrees, whereas the suppression at phase 270 degrees (maximal rarefaction at the eardrum) is nearly complete. However, in cases of endolymphatic hydrops this masking effect is reduced or absent, indicating impaired mobility of the basilar

An alternative mathematical description of the relationship between noise exposure and hearing loss.

Retrospective investigation of large populations has provided means for determining quantitative relationships between the hearing levels of non-noise-exposed populations and age, and between the hearing levels of noise-exposed populations and age and noise exposure. In the latter case, noise exposures have been predominantly steady state over many years and no way of measuring the effects of noise alone, excluding the effects of age, has ever been demonstrated. In the following paper, attention is confined to the problem of developing a mathematical description of an existing set of empirical

Frequency patterns in cochlear, brainstem, and cerebral lesions.

Three groups of patients with different pathologies (cerebral, brainstem, and cochlear lesions) were tested and compared for performance on frequency patterns. Results indicated that the frequency pattern test was highly sensitive to cerebral lesions (83%), but not as sensitive to brainstem lesions (45%). There was very little overlap between results of subjects with cochlear hearing loss and those with cerebral lesions. The specificity of frequency patterns for detecting cerebral lesions (the number of true negative results divided by the number of cochlear subjects) was 88.2%.

Hearing loss in rats first exposed to toluene as weanlings or as young adults.

Male Fischer-344 rats were exposed by inhalation to 1200 ppm toluene (14 hr/day, 7 days/week for 5 weeks) beginning just after weaning or as young adults. During the fifth week of exposure, they were trained to perform a multisensory conditioned pole-climb avoidance response (CAR) task using a 4-kHz tone, a change in the intensity of the test chamber light, or a nonaversive current on the grill floor as the stimuli. When tested the week after the exposures ended, both groups of toluene-exposed rats were deficient in their performance of the CAR to a 20-kHz tone. This effect was significantly g

Experience with the cochlear implant enhances the neural tracking of spectrotemporal patterns in the Alberti bass.

Cochlear implant (CI) users experience diminished music enjoyment due to the technical limitations of the CI. Nonetheless, behavioral studies have reported that rhythmic features are well-transmitted through the CI. Still, the gradual improvement of rhythm perception after the CI switch-on has not yet been determined using neurophysiological measures. To fill this gap, we here reanalyzed the electroencephalographic responses of participants from two previous mismatch negativity studies. These studies included eight recently implanted CI users measured twice, within the first six weeks after CI

Neurod1 Is Essential for the Primary Tonotopic Organization and Related Auditory Information Processing in the Midbrain.

Hearing depends on extracting frequency, intensity, and temporal properties from sound to generate an auditory map for acoustical signal processing. How physiology intersects with molecular specification to fine tune the developing properties of the auditory system that enable these aspects remains unclear. We made a novel conditional deletion model that eliminates the transcription factor NEUROD1 exclusively in the ear. These mice (both sexes) develop a truncated frequency range with no neuroanatomically recognizable mapping of spiral ganglion neurons onto distinct locations in the cochlea no

Left ventral occipitotemporal activation during orthographic and semantic processing of auditory words.

The present fMRI study investigated the hypothesis that activation of the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) in response to auditory words can be attributed to lexical orthographic rather than lexico-semantic processing. To this end, we presented auditory words in both an orthographic ("three or four letter word?") and a semantic ("living or nonliving?") task. In addition, a auditory control condition presented tones in a pitch evaluation task. The results showed that the left vOT exhibited higher activation for orthographic relative to semantic processing of auditory words with a peak

Effects of centrifugal pathways on responses of cochlear nucleus neurons to signals in noise.

The medial olivocochlear (MOC) system, which originates in the brainstem and projects to the outer hair cells in the cochlea, is thought to be involved in improving signal detection in noisy backgrounds. This proposition arises from the observation that the input-output functions of auditory primary afferent fibres to pure tones recorded in a continuous background noise are unmasked by MOC activation, improving the dynamic range, and is supported by both animal and human behavioural experiments. However, it is not known how the unmasking effects observed in the cochlea are translated into high

The relationship of continuous (C) and interrupted (I) tones at threshold and most comfortable loudness (MCL) in hearing-impaired ears.

Differences in the Bekesy tracking levels of continuous (C) and interrupted (I) tones at both threshold and most comfortable loudness (MCL) were determined in a large clinical sample of persons with hearing loss. Results indicate small but significant C-I differences not only at the two levels separately but also in the tracking of C and I tones at threshold relative to MCL, regardless of frequency or hearing loss severity. Such results may have implications for both diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology.

Upward Shifts in the Internal Representation of Frequency Can Persist Over a 3-Year Period for Cochlear Implant Patients Fit With a Relatively Short Electrode Array.

Patients fit with cochlear implants (CIs) commonly indicate at the time of device fitting and for some time after, that the speech signal sounds abnormal. A high pitch or timbre is one component of the abnormal percept. In this project, our aim was to determine whether a number of years of CI use reduced perceived upshifts in frequency spectrum and/or voice fundamental frequency. The participants were five individuals who were deaf in one ear and who had normal hearing in the other ear. The deafened ears had been implanted with a 18.5 mm electrode array which resulted in signal input frequenci

Restoration of Sight with Electronic Retinal Prostheses.

Retinal prostheses aim at restoring sight to patients blinded by atrophy of photoreceptors using electrical stimulation of the inner retinal neurons. Bipolar cells can be targeted using subretinal implants, and their responses are then relayed to the central visual pathways via the retinal neural network, preserving many features of natural signal processing. Epiretinal implants stimulate the output retinal layer-ganglion cells-and encode visual information directly in spiking patterns.Several companies and academic groups have demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the degenerate retina

Tympanophonia can be a consequence of a variety of diseases and pathological conditions diagnostics of which encounters difficulties. The comprehensive clinical examination of the patient is necessary to determine the cause of tympanophonia including elucidation of the following characteristics: initial (acute or gradual) sensation of sound in the ear(s), duration of persisting clinical manifestations, the presence of an acoustic or craniocerebral injury, characteristics of the noise, viz. continuous or intermittent, clicking sounds, paroxysmal or pulsed noise (synchronous with the heart beati
