As malaria elimination becomes a possibility the focus of interventions changes from vector control to disease control. It is important that treatment occurs early during an infection in order for it to be efficacious, especially at the population level. The time between the onset of symptoms and treatment seeking is, therefore, crucial. Following a census and an oral autopsy survey of the inhabitants of Furvela, a village in southern Mozambique, a malaria post (MP) where malaria was diagnosed and treated was established in 2001. The time between the onset of symptoms and attendance at the MP

The frequent occurrences of Babesia microti (B. microti) infection have emerged as a significant global public health safety concern. The diagnosis of patients constitutes a crucial component in the prevention and control of babesiosis, necessitating the urgent establishment of efficient and accurate molecular biology diagnostic methods for B. microti detection. This study aimed to develop a sensitive, specific, and rapid fluorescent recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) technique for the detection of B. microti (B. microti) and assess its suitability for field use. This study developed a

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic school children serve as a reservoir for ongoing transmission, and asymptomatic malaria infection contributes to cognitive impairment and school absenteeism. Therefore, this review aims to determine the pooled prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infection and the factors associated with it in school children.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. We searched online databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and ScienceDirect, to review the literature. The Conditi

BACKGROUND: Persons with submicroscopic malaria infection are a major reservoir of gametocytes that sustain malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite recent decreases in the national malaria burden in Kenya due to vector control interventions, malaria transmission continues to be high in western regions of the country bordering Lake Victoria. The objective of this study was to advance knowledge of the topographical, demographic and behavioral risk factors associated with submicroscopic malaria infection in the Lake Victoria basin in Kisumu County.
METHODS: Cross-sectional community

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax (P vivax) is a focus of malaria elimination. It is important because P vivax and Plasmodium falciparum infection are co-endemic in some areas. There are asymptomatic carriers of P vivax, and the treatment for P vivax and Plasmodium ovale malaria differs from that used in other types of malaria. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) will help distinguish P vivax from other malaria species to help treatment and elimination. There are RDTs available that detect P vivax parasitaemia through the detection of P vivax-specific lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) antigens.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Malaria in humans is caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. These parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles mosquito. The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to regions with ongoing malaria transmission. However, malaria is also occasionally acquired by persons who have not traveled out of the country through exposure to infected blood products, congenital transmission, laboratory exposure, or local mosquitoborne transmission. BACKGROUND: The radical cure of Plasmodium vivax and P. ovale requires treatment with primaquine or tafenoquine to clear dormant liver stages. Either drug can induce haemolysis in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, necessitating screening. The reference diagnostic method for G6PD activity is ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry; however, a universal G6PD activity threshold above which these drugs can be safely administered is not yet defined. Our study aimed to quantify assay-based variation in G6PD spectrophotometry and to explore the diagnostic implications o

Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) has a low early detection rate and a high mortality rate. There are many problems such as side effects and drug resistance in existing therapeutic drugs. Current studies have confirmed that SKCM pathogenesis-related genes promote the invasion and metastasis of cutaneous melanoma, but their roles in the tumor microenvironment (TME) remain unclear. Network pharmacology provides new opportunities for drug repurposing and repositioning, and is a fast, safe, and inexpensive drug discovery method to find new drugs for the treatment of SKCM. In this study, based on 3 da

Many of the drugs used in treatment today have been designed based on the "specificity paradigm". Resistance has developed against drugs designed using this approach, leading to a decrease in their effectiveness. In addition, it is well-documented in the literature that diseases with complex etiologies, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and cancer are influenced by multiple genetic and/or environmental factors. As a result, specificity paradigm is often insufficient for treating these diseases. Therefore, there is a need to develop drugs that interact with multiple targets simultaneously throu

The indiscriminate consumption of antimalarials against coronavirus disease-2019 emphasizes the longstanding clinical weapons of medicines. In this work, we conducted a review on the antitumor mechanisms of aminoquinolines, focusing on the responses and differences of tumor histological tissues and toxicity related to pharmacokinetics. This well-defined analysis shows similar mechanistic forms triggered by aminoquinolines in different histological tumor tissues and under coexposure conditions, although different pharmacological potencies also occur. These molecules are lysosomotropic amines th

Toxicity studies were performed with a chemically defined mixture of 25 groundwater contaminants, using dose levels considered to have environmental relevance. The mixture contained 19 organic compounds and six metals (shown below); the selection of these compounds was based primarily on the frequency of their occurrence in United States Environmental Protection Agency surveys of groundwater contamination in the vicinity of hazardous waste disposal sites. This report focuses primarily on 26-week drinking water toxicity studies with male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F(1) mice. The endpoints e
