Reading disabilities and the effects of colored filters.

The efficacy of a controversial treatment, using colored filters to remediate reading disabilities, was measured empirically, with colored overlays placed over reading material on white paper. Irlen's (1983) method is to prescribe specific tinted filters as lenses that she claims filter specific light frequencies and remove a range of perceptual disorders that adversely affect reading and related learning performance. Irlen calls this condition "scotopic sensitivity" and claims it is a significant factor in a high percentage of people with learning disabilities. Ninety-two children with signif

Inaccurate pressure readings for subarachnoid bolts.

The subarachnoid bolt has been used extensively to monitor intracranial pressure in a variety of conditions. We have had two patients who had subarachnoid bolts in place that were thought to be functional in whom evidence of increased pressure was present. In one case, the patient had Reye's syndrome with seizure activity, decerebrate posturing, fixed and dilated pupils, and cardiac arrest. Although autopsy revealed evidence of cerebellar and uncal herniation, verifying the presence of pressure cones, the subarachnoid bolt pressure was never elevated and had a good wave form. In the other case

Reading disability and defects of the middle ear.

The impedance bridge test is a sensitive and objective measure of the integrity and function of the middle ear. Tympanograms obtained from children with a specific reading disability were compared with those from a matched group of controls. A significantly higher prevalence of defects of the middle ear was shown in the test group.

Exploring Latent Profiles of Word-Reading and Reading Comprehension Skills Among English-French Bilingual Children in Grades 1 to 3.

This study aimed to advance our understanding of the reading profiles of bilinguals who are struggling readers. To this end, 198 English-French bilinguals attending French immersion were followed from Grades 1 to 3. Latent profile and transition analyses were conducted with measures of word-reading and reading comprehension to establish categorically distinct reading profiles in each language and their stability over time. The resulting profiles were then labeled according to percentile rank criteria on the reading measures. Results indicated that, across the three to four profiles identified

The dynamics of RAN and cognitive-linguistic skills in vowelized and unvowelized Hebrew word reading among children with reading difficulties.

This study investigated predictors of vowelized and unvowelized word reading efficiency among third-grade Hebrew-speaking students with reading difficulties (RD). First, it examined the contribution of rapid automatization naming (RAN), working memory (WM), phonological awareness (PA), morphological awareness (MA), and orthographic processing (OP) in explaining vowelized and unvowelized word reading efficiency among third-grade students with RD. It further explored how RAN interacts with WM, PA, MA, and OP in explaining word reading efficiency in the two scripts, and whether the contribution o

The Effects of Refractive Imbalance on Binocular Vision Status, Reading Performance, and Vision-Related Reading Difficulty Symptoms in Expert Readers.

PURPOSE: To investigate how refractive imbalance affects binocular vision parameters, reading performance, and vision-related reading difficulty symptomatology after short periods of reading with different simulated ophthalmic lens power conditions in expert adult readers. METHODS: Eighteen adult participants (18-35 years of age) were recruited. They were expert readers, defined as currently studying, or previously studied to, at least a bachelor's degree tertiary education level. Refractive imbalance conditions were simulated by placing -2.00, -1.00, 0.00, +1.00, and +2.00 diopters (D) ophth

How Does Theory of Mind (ToM) Affect Chinese Reading of Children With Dyslexia? The Moderation Effect of Picture Book Reading.

This study investigated Theory of Mind (ToM) in Chinese children with and without dyslexia and examined the moderating effect of early picture book reading experience on the relationship between ToM and reading comprehension. Grounded in the Landscape Model of Reading, we compared ToM between groups and explored how early literacy experiences influence reading comprehension. In total, 86 Chinese children, including 44 with dyslexia and 42 typically developing, were recruited for this study. Results revealed that typically developing children outperformed those with dyslexia in ToM tasks (η2 p

Efficacy of Small-Group Reading Intervention for Grades 2 and 3 Children With Reading Difficulties: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

We examined whether a Phonics + Set for Variability (SfV) reading intervention would lead to better irregular word reading compared to Phonics + Morphology within a cluster randomized control trial (RCT) design with a follow-up measurement. The participants were 273 Grades 2 and 3 students with reading difficulties (139 in the Phonics + SfV and 134 in the Phonics + Morphology) who received intervention in small groups (2-4 children), 4 times a week, 30 minutes each time, for 15 weeks. All participants were from schools in Alberta, Canada. Results of hierarchical linear modeling showed that the

A developmental study of eye movements in Hebrew word reading: the effects of word familiarity, word length, and reading proficiency.

Previous studies examining the link between visual word recognition and eye movements have shown that eye movements reflect the time-course of cognitive processes involved in reading. Whereas most studies have been undertaken in Western European languages written in the Roman alphabet, the present developmental study investigates a non-European language-Hebrew, which is written in a non-alphabetic (abjadic) script. We compared the eye-movements of children in Grades 4 to 6 (N = 30) and university students (N = 30) reading familiar real words and unfamiliar (pseudo)words of 3 letters and 5 lett

Maternal education as an environmental factor related to reading in children with reading difficulties: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

The expanded simple view of reading (SVR) model suggests that word decoding, language comprehension and executive functions are necessary for reading comprehension. Children with reading difficulties (RDs) often have deficits in critical components of reading established in the expanded SVR model and alterations in brain function of reading-related regions. Maternal education could provide children with advantageous educational opportunities or resources that support reading acquisition. The primary goal of this study was to examine the contributions of maternal education to the behavioural an

Leisure Reading (But Not Any Kind) and Reading Comprehension Support Each Other-A Longitudinal Study Across Grades 1 and 9.

This study examines associations between leisure reading and reading skills in data of 2,525 students followed from age 7 to 16. As a step further from traditional cross-lagged analysis, a random intercept cross-lagged panel model was used to identify within-person associations of leisure reading (books, magazines, newspapers, and digital reading), reading fluency, and reading comprehension. In Grades 1-3 poorer comprehension and fluency predicted less leisure reading. In later grades more frequent leisure reading, particularly of books, predicted better reading comprehension. Negative associa

Examining reading comprehension text and question answering time differences in university students with and without a history of reading difficulties.

The current study aimed to examine performance times during text reading and question answering of students with and without a history of reading difficulties. Forty-three university students with a history of reading difficulties (HRD) were compared to 124 university students without a history of reading difficulties on measures of word and nonword reading rate, text reading rate and comprehension, and question answering times. Results showed that students with HRD demonstrated slower word, nonword, and text reading rates than their peers, but had comparable reading comprehension scores. Resu

Perception of patterns of musical beat distribution in phonological developmental dyslexia: significant longitudinal relations with word reading and reading comprehension.

INTRODUCTION: In a recent study, we reported that the accurate perception of beat structure in music ('perception of musical meter') accounted for over 40% of the variance in single word reading in children with and without dyslexia (Huss et al., 2011). Performance in the musical task was most strongly associated with the auditory processing of rise time, even though beat structure was varied by manipulating the duration of the musical notes. METHODS: Here we administered the same musical task a year later to 88 children with and without dyslexia, and used new auditory processing measures to

Ecological, psychological, and cognitive components of reading difficulties: testing the component model of reading in fourth graders across 38 countries.

The authors tested the component model of reading (CMR) among 186,725 fourth grade students from 38 countries (45 regions) on five continents by analyzing the 2006 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study data using measures of ecological (country, family, school, teacher), psychological, and cognitive components. More than 91% of the differences in student difficulty occurred at the country (61%) and classroom (30%) levels (ecological), with less than 9% at the student level (cognitive and psychological). All three components were negatively associated with reading difficulties: cogni

[Prevalence of reading disabilities in early elementary school: impact of socioeconomic environment on reading development in 3 different educational zones].

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic status (SES) has a known influence on academic achievement. Most studies, however, were conducted in English-speaking countries. Because recent cross-linguistic studies suggest that reading English is much harder to learn than reading other languages, an epidemiological study was conducted in French investigating the impact of socioeconomic background on early reading development. DESIGN: One thousand and twenty second-grade children (476 girls and 544 boys) from 20 different schools participated in the study. Approximately 1/3 of the children lived and were schooled

Retrospective analyses of the reading development of grade 4 students with reading disabilities: risk status and profiles over 5 years.

This study presents a longitudinal examination of the development of reading and reading-related skills of 22 Grade 4 children identified as having reading disabilities (RD) who had been followed since kindergarten. The analyses were conducted to investigate the patterns of emergence of RD as well as reading ability and risk status across the 5 years. The findings of the study are presented with an examination of the trajectories of the children with RD as compared to Grade 4 typical readers (matched for grade, gender, language status, and school) with a similar profile on literacy skills in k

Reading disability defined as a discrepancy between listening and reading comprehension: a longitudinal study of stability, gender differences, and prevalence.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether defining reading disability by a discrepancy between group-administered tests of listening and reading comprehension would produce result similar in terms of stability, gender ratio, and prevalence to IQ-achievement test discrepancy definitions. The total population of a small school district (N = 1,008) was followed from prekindergarten through Grade 7-8 for 13 years. As is often seen in epidemiological studies using IQ and individually administered reading tests to define reading disability, stability in the classification of reading disabil
