A systematic review and narrative synthesis of functional neuroimaging studies for chronic ocular surface pain.

Chronic ocular surface pain (COSP) is a debilitating condition of the eye driven by nociceptive, nociplastic, and neuropathic mechanisms. While individual studies using functional neuroimaging techniques to investigate ocular pain exist, the full extent, methodologies, and cumulative findings of this body of literature have not been systematically synthesized. Using a systematic review approach, we identified 5 articles evaluating the use of functional neuroimaging in COSP patients from an initial pool of 643 unique studies. All studies used functional magnetic resonance imaging exclusively as

Trait anxiety negatively modulates the coupling of motor event-related desynchronization and event-related synchronization.

BACKGROUND: Recent neurophysiological studies showed that patients with psychiatric disorders demonstrated abnormalities in sensorimotor functions in addition to cognitive deficits. These findings intrigued us to investigate whether trait anxiety, a persistent inclination towards being anxious in multiple contexts, would affect motor cortical functions. Event-related desynchronization (ERD) and event-related synchronization (ERS) of α and β oscillations are associated with movement execution and movement termination, respectively. However, no study has comprehensively examined the effects of t

Infant frontal EEG asymmetry across an emotion-eliciting task: Leveraging novel quantitative approaches to discern links with parent-child interactions.

Interest in the impact of parent-child interactions on infant electroencephalography (EEG) has steadily grown, yet research is still relatively limited. Additionally, studies often rely on averages computed across trials or isolated segments, and do not examine infants' neurophysiological responses to longer naturalistic emotion-eliciting situations. Mothers with infants (n = 106, boys = 59) 6-12 months of age were recruited with the goal of examining the effect of parent-child interactions on infant CNS response in the context of repeated trials of the Still Face Paradigm (SFP; Haley & Stansb

Modulation of Neural Spiking in Motor Cortex-Cerebellar Networks during Sleep Spindles.

Sleep spindles appear to play an important role in learning new motor skills. Motor skill learning engages several brain regions with two important areas being the motor cortex (M1) and the cerebellum (CB). However, the neurophysiological processes in these areas during sleep, especially how spindle oscillations affect local and cross-region spiking, are not fully understood. We recorded an activity from the M1 and cerebellar cortex in eight rats during spontaneous activity to investigate how sleep spindles in these regions are related to local spiking as well as cross-region spiking. We found

Clinical and genetic features of CMT2T in Italian patients confirm the importance of MME pathogenic variants in idiopathic, late-onset axonal neuropathies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since 2016, biallelic mutations in the membrane metalloendopeptidase (MME) gene have been associated with late-onset recessive CMT2 (CMT2T). More recently, heterozygous mutations have also been identified in familial and sporadic patients with late-onset axonal neuropathy, ranging from subclinical to severe. This indicates that the heterozygous MME variants may not be fully penetrant, or alternatively, that they may be a potential risk factor for neuropathy. Here, we describe the clinical, neurophysiological, and genetic findings of 32 CM2T Italian patients. METHODS: The

Alterations in brain connectivity patterns in schizophrenia patients with auditory verbal hallucinations during low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a characteristic symptom of schizophrenia. Although low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been demonstrated to alleviate the severity of AVH, its exact neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the alterations in brain connectivity patterns in schizophrenia patients with AVH after low frequency rTMS. Furthermore, the relationship between these alterations and clinical outcomes was examined, thereby identifying potential biomarkers for rTMS treatment efficacy. METHODS: A total

The psychosis human connectome project: Design and rationale for studies of visual neurophysiology.

Visual perception is abnormal in psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. In addition to hallucinations, laboratory tests show differences in fundamental visual processes including contrast sensitivity, center-surround interactions, and perceptual organization. A number of hypotheses have been proposed to explain visual dysfunction in psychotic disorders, including an imbalance between excitation and inhibition. However, the precise neural basis of abnormal visual perception in people with psychotic psychopathology (PwPP) remains unknown. Here, we describe the behavioral and 7 tesla MRI meth

Insights from a laboratory and naturalistic investigation on stress, rumination and frontal brain functioning in MDD: An fNIRS study.

Recent research has emphasized rumination as an important maintaining factor in various mental disorders. However, operationalization and therefore induction of rumination in experimental settings poses a major challenge in terms of ecological validity. As stress seems to play a key role in everyday situations eliciting rumination, we conducted two stress paradigms while assessing behavioral and neurophysiological measures. Aiming to replicate previous findings on induced rumination by means of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and comparing them to physiological (pain) stress, a clinical sa

Novel human models for elucidating mechanisms of rate-sensitive H-reflex depression.

BACKGROUND: This study used novel human neurophysiologic models to investigate whether the mechanism of rate-sensitive H-reflex depression lies in the pre-synaptic or post-synaptic locus in humans. We hypothesized that pre-synaptic inhibition would suppress Ia afferents and H-reflexes without suppressing alpha motor neurons or motor evoked potentials (MEPs). In contrast, post-synaptic inhibition would suppress alpha motor neurons, thereby reducing H-reflexes and MEPs. METHODS: We recruited 23 healthy adults with typical rate-sensitive H-reflex depression, 2 participants with acute sensory-imp

Psychiatric adverse effects of zonisamide in patients with epilepsy and mental disorder comorbidities.

Over the last few years, zonisamide has been proposed as a potentially useful medication for patients with focal seizures, with or without secondary generalization. Since psychiatric adverse effects, including mania, psychosis, and suicidal ideation, have been associated with its use, it was suggested that the presence of antecedent psychiatric disorders is an important factor associated with the discontinuation of zonisamide therapy in patients with epilepsy. We, therefore, set out to assess the tolerability profile of zonisamide in a retrospective chart review of 23 patients with epilepsy an

Muscle performance and physical function are associated with voluntary rate of neuromuscular activation in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Muscle power is related to mobility function in older adults, and effective power production requires rapid neuromuscular activation. Accordingly, this study examines the association of neuromuscular activation rate with muscle performance in persons of different age and mobility function. METHODS: Participants were recruited to three experimental groups: middle-aged healthy adults (MH), older healthy adults (OH), and older adults with mobility limitations (OML). OH and OML were primarily differentiated by performance on the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Muscle perfor

Frequency distribution of F-latencies (DFL) has physiological significance and gives distribution of conduction velocity (DCV) of motor nerve fibres with implications for diagnosis.

On electrical stimulation of a peripheral motor nerve, a delayed and reduced F-response is obtained, which is known to occur due to random backfiring of a few percent of the motor nerve fibres at the spinal end after antidromic conduction. F-latencies obtained from multiple stimulations vary in latency, size and shape because of this randomness. We hypothesised that, being a random process, recruitment of fibres for F-response would depend on the distribution of conduction velocity (DCV) for motor nerve fibres directly, and therefore, a frequency distribution of F-latencies (DFL) from such mul

The CHARGE study: an epidemiologic investigation of genetic and environmental factors contributing to autism.

Causes and contributing factors for autism are poorly understood. Evidence suggests that prevalence is rising, but the extent to which diagnostic changes and improvements in ascertainment contribute to this increase is unclear. Both genetic and environmental factors are likely to contribute etiologically. Evidence from twin, family, and genetic studies supports a role for an inherited predisposition to the development of autism. Nonetheless, clinical, neuroanatomic, neurophysiologic, and epidemiologic studies suggest that gene penetrance and expression may be influenced, in some cases strongly

Disentangling oscillatory and aperiodic neural activity in autism: A spectral parameterization analysis of neurofeedback intervention.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by atypical neural oscillations and heterogeneous alterations in excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance, the directionality of which varies across individuals, neural circuits, and developmental stages. While Alpha-band neurofeedback (NFB) is a promising intervention, its underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear, partly due to the conflation of periodic and aperiodic signals in traditional EEG analysis. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial recruited 40 children with ASD, assigned to either an experimental group (Alph

A machine learning approach to predicting dyspnea with noninvasive biomarkers.

Dyspnea is the subjective sensation of breathing discomfort. This symptom is highly prevalent in patients with chronic and critical illness, and its presence is associated with poor clinical outcomes and long-term psychological trauma. The multidimensional nature of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying dyspnea, paired with individual variation in its presentation, makes identifying and monitoring this symptom difficult, particularly in non-communicative patients. Undetected and untreated dyspnea in critically ill patients is a significant problem contributing to patient suffering. Ther

Association between Tinnitus and Auditory Middle Latency Response: An Exploratory Study.

Tinnitus is a concerning condition that affects most adults worldwide, with a prevalence of 6.7%. Theories of tinnitus have explained that an increase in spontaneous neural activity at the level of the thalamus could induce tinnitus. There are no standardized objective tests for tinnitus assessment because of its multifaceted nature. Hence, the current study aimed to explore the effect of Tinnitus on Latency and Amplitude of the Auditory Middle Latency Response in Audiological Attendees. The study recruited 50 individuals (25 normals and 25 individuals with tinnitus) who underwent audiological

Investigation of Proprioceptive Responses to Passive Lower Limb Movements Based on Corticokinematic Coherence.

Corticokinematic coherence (CKC) is the phase coupling between limb kinematics and cortical neurophysiological signals, reflecting cortical processing of proprioceptive afference. While previous CKC research has primarily focused on passive finger movements, cortical responses to passive lower limb movements remain insufficiently explored. This study developed a lower limb movement actuator to deliver rhythmic passive lower limb movements across a range of frequencies and amplitudes. Ten healthy participants were recruited to evaluate how stimulation parameters influence CKC, computed from coh

STOPS approach to individualised physiotherapy versus usual physiotherapy care for chronic low back pain in India: A randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as India. Many treatment approaches fail to address the multidimensional nature of LBP, leading to suboptimal outcomes. The Specific Treatment of Problems of the Spine (STOPS) approach addresses biological, neurophysiological, and psychosocial factors to deliver individualised physiotherapy for LBP, yet its effectiveness in India has not been explored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of individualised physiotherapy using the STOPS approac
