Ocular sequelae in premature infants.

OBJECTIVE: The authors report on the incidence of myopia and strabismus at 12 and 24 months postterm in a cohort of 190 premature infants with birth weights of less than 1251 g born in 1986 and 1987. METHODS: The neonatal and follow-up eye charts of a cohort of 190 premature infants were retrospectively reviewed. All 138 children who survived the neonatal period had at least one eye examination between day 28 and 42 of life that documented the presence and staging of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) according to the International Classification of ROP. No infants received cryotherapy. Eye exa

Evaluation of a low-resource screening strategy for ophthalmic pathologies and associated neurological morbidity in an older Tanzanian HIV-positive population.

Globally, 43 million people are living with HIV, 90% in developing countries. Increasing life expectancy with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) results in chronic complications, including HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and eye diseases. HAND screening is currently challenging. Our aim was to evaluate clinical utility of retinopathy as a screening measure of HAND in older cART-treated individuals in Tanzania and feasibility of smartphone-based retinal screening in this low-resource setting. A cross-sectional systematic sample aged ≥ 50-years attending routine HIV follow-

Successful treatment of central retinal artery thromboembolism with ocular massage and intravenous acetazolamide.

A 67-year-old woman presented with left-sided headache and blurred vision, worse during hypertensive episodes. CT angiography showed a 4 mm left internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm incorporating the ophthalmic artery. She passed a test balloon occlusion, so the aneurysm was coil occluded, without immediate complication. Four days postprocedure she experienced sudden loss of vision in the left eye and funduscopy showed central retinal artery occlusion secondary to emboli from the coiled aneurysm. She was treated promptly with intravenous acetazolamide and ocular massage and regained full vis

Effects of 530 nm green light on refractive status, melatonin, MT1 receptor, and melanopsin in the guinea pig.

PURPOSE: To investigate (i) the effect of monochromatic light on inhibiting induction of light-induced melatonin and (ii) the roles of melanopsin and MT1 receptor in light-induced myopia in the guinea pig. METHODS: Forty-eight guinea pigs were randomly distributed into three treatment groups: white-light (control), green-light (530 nm), and blue-light (480 nm) groups. Levels of pineal gland melatonin were measured twice daily--10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.--10 days after initial light treatment. Thirty additional guinea pigs were also assigned to these groups and treated similarly. For these latt

Evidence for hypermetropia, astigmatism, and anisometropia associated with, and early glasses preventing, the development of amblyopia and accommodative esotropia.

In many countries that have population-wide screening for amblyopia by measurement of visual acuity (VA), additional screening for refractive errors to prevent the development of amblyopia is being considered. We assessed the available evidence for the association between high refractive error in young children and the development of amblyopia and accommodative esotropia, and the influence of early prescription of glasses. The following search terms were used: refractive errors, amblyopia or strabismus, and children. Included were articles describing associations between high hypermetropia, as

A patient diagnosed with Galloway-Mowat syndrome presenting with a rod-cone functional anomaly with electronegative dark-adapted ERGs.

PURPOSE: Galloway-Mowat syndrome (GAMOS) is a clinically heterogenous and rare condition classically described as the combination of nephrotic syndrome associated with brain anomaly and delays in development. It was first reported in the literature in 1968 by Galloway W.H and Mowat A.P. Reports of visual anomaly in these patients are generally limited to decreased visual acuity, nystagmus and optic nerve atrophy. To this day, little is known about retinal function in this disease. Therefore, the purpose of this case report is to reveal abnormal retinal function (including light-adapted and dar

Prevalence of Refractive Errors Among School-Going Children in Urban Versus Rural Areas.

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of visual impairment globally is refractive error. The prevalence of refractive error has been on the rise since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, possibly due to increased indoor activities and excessive use of electronic devices. Impaired vision during childhood can affect the overall development of a child adversely, and it often remains unreported due to the inability of children to complain about impaired vision. AIM: The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of refractive errors among school-going children in urban and rura

[First results of implantation of a new, potentially accommodative posterior chamber intraocular lens].

PURPOSE: Conventional posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PCIOL) generally provide excellent visual acuity but do not restore accommodation. A new, potentially accommodative PCIOL has been designed after principles elaborated by K.D. Hanna using finite element models. However, before newly developed PCIOL may be implanted routinely in larger numbers of patients, careful and meticulous evaluation in clinical studies is necessary. Thus, it was the aim of this study to investigate intra- and early 3-month postoperative findings after implantation of the newly designed PCIOL. PATIENTS AND METHO

Investigating the potential of Zernike polynomials to characterise spatial distribution of macular pigment.

It has been postulated that particular patterns of macular pigment (MP) distribution may be associated with the risk for eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This work investigates the potential of Zernike polynomials (ZP) to characterise the level and distribution of MP, and their suitability as a representation for analysis of the effects of age and AMD on MP patterns. As the case study, MP distribution maps computed using an experimental method based on fundus reflectance (MRIA) were obtained for ninety volunteers representing three groups: under-fifty without AMD, f

Prevalence of Accommodative Insufficiency in Children With Normal Accommodative-Convergence/Accommodation Ratio and Its Association With Refractive Error: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: With the increasing use of digital devices among the pediatric population, asthenopia has become increasingly common. While refractive errors are the most prevalent cause, they can sometimes be linked to undiagnosed or underdiagnosed binocular vision disorders, such as accommodative insufficiency (AI). In many cases, simple refractive correction alone does not alleviate asthenopia. This study aims to determine the prevalence of AI in children with a normal accommodative-convergence/accommodation (AC/A) ratio and to investigate the correlation between accommodative amplitude and refr

Emmetropization in chicks uses optical vergence and relative distance cues to decode defocus.

When visual information is confined to one object plane, the emmetropization end-point is adjusted in accord with the corresponding incident optical vergence at the eye [Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Myopia (2000) 113]. We now report the effect of adding extra visual information beyond the target plane. Visual conditions were controlled using a cone-lens system: black Maltese cross targets on white opaque backgrounds (OMX) were attached to the open faces of 2.5 cm translucent cones fitted with either 0, +25 or +40 D imaging lenses. An alternative target (TMX) was made by s
