Agreement between the neonatal neurological examination and a standardized assessment of neurobehavioural performance in a group of high-risk newborns.

The degree of agreement between the neonatal neurological examination and a standardized neurobehavioural assessment was investigated in a group of 32 newborns with congenital heart defects. A paediatric neurologist performed a neurological examination, and an occupational therapist administered the Einstein Neonatal Neurobehavioural Assessment Scale on all subjects. Both examiners independently evaluated each subject, and were blinded to the diagnosis, to perinatal status and to each other's clinical findings. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant association between the overall imp

Bat flies (Diptera: Nycteribiidae and Streblidae) infesting cave-dwelling bats in Gabon: diversity, dynamics and potential role in Polychromophilus melanipherus transmission.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of haemosporidian infections in bats and bat flies has motivated a growing interest in characterizing their transmission cycles. In Gabon (Central Africa), many caves house massive colonies of bats that are known hosts of Polychromophilus Dionisi parasites, presumably transmitted by blood-sucking bat flies. However, the role of bat flies in bat malaria transmission remains under-documented. METHODS: An entomological survey was carried out in four caves in Gabon to investigate bat fly diversity, infestation rates and host preferences and to determine their role in Polychro

Moebius syndrome: clinical manifestations in a pediatric patient.

Moebius syndrome is a congenital, nonprogressive disorder clinically characterized by loss of facial expression, impaired stomatognathic system functions, incapacity to close the eyelids, and several oral impairments. The purpose of this paper was to present the clinical manifestations and the dental treatment in a 5-year, 2-month-old male Moebius syndrome patient. The child presented with facial asymmetry, difficulty performing facial mimic movements and pronouncing some letters, and compromised suction, mastication, breathing, and deglutition. An intraoral examination revealed hypofunction o

Nipple pain, damage, and vasospasm in the first 8 weeks postpartum.

BACKGROUND: Nipple pain and damage are common in the early postpartum period and are associated with early cessation of breastfeeding and comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, and mastitis. The incidence of nipple vasospasm has not been reported previously. This article describes nipple pain and damage prospectively in first-time mothers and explores the relationship between method of birth and nipple pain and/or damage. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort of 360 primiparous women was recruited in Melbourne, Australia, in the interval 2009-2011, and after birth participants were f

Effects of maternal chronic alcohol administration in the rat: lactation performance and pup's growth.

A fostering/crossfostering analysis of the effects of maternal ethanol exposure on lactation performance and offspring growth was performed. Wistar rats were kept under one of the three experimental nutritional treatments: alcohol-treated (EG), pair-fed-treated (PFG) (as a nutritional control of alcohol-associated malnutrition), and control or normal diet (CG). Rats from the EG group were accustomed to increased amounts of ethanol (5% during the first week to 20% in the fourth week). The 20% ethanol level was maintained throughout three additional weeks and during gestational and lactational p

Early suckling and postpartum haemorrhage: controlled trial in deliveries by traditional birth attendants.

A randomised, controlled trial was carried out to determine whether suckling immediately after birth reduces the frequency of post-partum haemorrhage (PPH), the mean blood loss, and the frequency of retained placenta. The trial subjects were attended by traditional birth attendants (TBAs), and randomisation was by TBA and not by mother. 68 TBAs attended a course on third stage management and data collection; 19 had to be excluded from the trial. 23 TBAs in the early suckling group and 26 in the control group recorded blood loss in 2104 and 2123 deliveries of liveborn singletons, respectively.

Feeding immaturity in preterm neonates: risk factors for oropharyngeal aspiration and timing of maturation.

OBJECTIVE: Oropharyngeal aspiration (OPA) is a common cause of morbidity in premature neonates. We sought to identify significant risk factors and determine the timing of feeding maturation in preterm infants with OPA. METHODS: We performed a retrospective medical record review of 148 former preterm neonates referred for modified barium swallow study (MBSS) during a 3-year period. We looked at the MBSS results and potential clinical and demographic risk factors and performed bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses to evaluate predictors of failure. We evaluated the timing of

Development of gastrointestinal motility in the infant and child.

The neuromuscular apparatus of the gastrointestinal tract develops early in gestation, but normal patterns of innervation and contractile activity are not achieved until near birth. This article reviews the ontogeny of gastrointestinal neuromuscular anatomy and the development of coordinated peristaltic function in the different regions of the gastrointestinal tract. This information provides a basis for understanding the difficulties encountered in successfully providing enteral feeding to the preterm infant.

Behavioral responses of the leafhopper, Cicadulina storeyi China, a major vector of maize streak virus, to volatile cues from intact and leafhopper-damaged maize.

The chemical ecology of the leafhopper, Cicadulina storeyi China (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), an important vector of Maize Streak Virus (MSV), was studied with a view to developing novel leafhopper control strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. Choice tests using a Y-tube olfactometer revealed that odors from uninfested maize seedlings (Zea mays cv. Delprim) were significantly more attractive to C. storeyi than odors from C. storeyi-infested seedlings. Headspace samples of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collected from 10 to 12 day-old uninfested seedlings were more attractive than those collected

Impact of birth weight and gender on early postnatal hypothalamic energy balance regulatory gene expression in the young lamb.

Intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) is involved in developmental metabolic programming and here we test the hypothesis that IUGR affects the developing hypothalamic energy balance regulatory pathways in a sex-specific manner. This experiment investigated early postnatal hypothalamic gene expression for six primary leptin- and insulin-sensitive neuropeptides and receptors in male and female IUGR (n = 8 and 9, respectively) and normal (N) birth weight lambs (n = 8 per gender) gestated and suckled by overnourished mothers. IUGR lambs were smaller at birth, had increased fractional growth rate

Oral and respiratory control for preterm feeding.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Feeding competency is a frequent and serious challenge to the neonatal intensive care unit survivors and to the physician-provider-parent teams. The urgency of effective assessment and intervention techniques is obviated to promote safe swallow, as attainment of oral feeding for the preterm infant/newborn is one of the prerequisites for hospital discharge. If left unresolved, feeding problems may persist into early childhood and may require management by pediatric gastroenterologists and feeding therapists. This review highlights studies aimed at understanding the motor cont

Birth to breast--a feeding care map for the NICU: helping the extremely low birth weight infant navigate the course.

Breast milk has been shown to contribute significantly to positive neurodevelopmental and medical outcomes in the extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infant population. It is crucial that ELBW infants receive their mother's colostrum as a first feeding, followed by expressed breast milk for as long as possible. Evidence-based literature supports the difficult challenges both mothers and ELBW infants face if they are to succeed at breast pumping and breastfeeding. Influencing factors include the medical fragility of the infant, limited frequency and duration of kangaroo care between mother and in

The "slurp" test: bedside evaluation of bulbar muscle fatigue.

Patients with myasthenia gravis or other neuromuscular disorders are subject to increasing weakness of bulbar-innervated muscles, with resulting aspiration or catastrophic airway compromise. The available practical assessments of bulbar function in children are inadequate. We report our experience with the "slurp" test, a new bedside measure of bulbar function, in children with myasthenia gravis. Our experience suggests that the test is valuable for identifying patients with probable serious compromise of bulbar function, for monitoring such children during times of intercurrent illness, and f

The Myofunctional Rehabilitation of Atypical Swallowing in Children and Adolescents With Stress-Related Detrimental Habits: Single-Center Longitudinal Study in Ukraine.

OBJECTIVES: War-related stress may exacerbate parafunctional oral/postural habits and hinder the normalization of swallowing in children. Evidence for low-burden myofunctional protocols remains limited, particularly in juveniles living in high-stressor settings. This study described short-term trajectories of swallowing rehabilitation status in Ukrainian orthodontic patients treated with a standardized FroggyMouth-based program during the wartime period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study used a single-center longitudinal observational design (March 2022-June 2024) with consecutive enrollment.

Impact of anterior single-tooth implants on quality of life, articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour: a pilot study.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the impact (one and a half year after implantation) of a single-tooth implant on articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour. This information is important for dentists, orthodontists or stomatologists who treat professional speakers. Objective (acoustic analysis) as well as subjective (questionnaire, phonetic inventory, phonetic analysis, oromyofunctional assessment of lip and tongue function, blowing, sucking and swallowing) assessment techniques were used to determine the quality of life, articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour.
