BACKGROUND: Natural gums have long served as essential excipients in pharmaceutical formulations, traditionally functioning as binders, disintegrants, suspending agents, and emulsifiers. Their role has expanded to include drug delivery carriers in advanced systems such as matrix formulations, gene therapy, and nanomedicine. Increasing attention has been given to natural gums over synthetic alternatives due to their non-toxicity, biodegradability, affordability, and availability. This study investigated the potential of Pentadesma butyracea gum as a matrix-forming agent for the extended release

With the rapid advancement of the IoT society and growing awareness of environmental issues, thermoelectric conversion technology-which directly converts waste heat into electricity-is gaining attention as a self-powered, autonomous power source capable of driving countless devices. While currently mainstream metal-based inorganic thermoelectric materials demonstrate high performance, their high rigidity and brittleness, as well as their frequent inclusion of toxic heavy metals, have limited their application in biological systems and on curved surfaces. As a next-generation alternative, singl

Background Anterior abdominal wall closure following midline laparotomy plays a crucial role in determining postoperative outcomes. Complications such as surgical site infection, wound dehiscence, and incisional hernia continue to contribute significantly to postoperative morbidity, particularly in emergency surgical settings. Conventional closure techniques may not always provide uniform tension distribution across the vertically divided linea alba. The herringbone suturing technique, characterized by a continuous crisscross pattern, has been proposed to enhance tensile strength and wound sta

This study explores the effectiveness of a new composite membrane fabricated from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and the UiO-66(COOH)2 metal-organic framework (MOF) for the removal of heavy metals from water. The electrospinning technique was successfully employed to homogeneously incorporate UiO-66(COOH)2 nanocrystals into PVC, producing fibrous composite membranes. The membranes were fully characterized using several techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), capillary flow porometry, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile strength analysis. INTRODUCTION: Joint injuries, a major type of human musculoskeletal disorder, are often accompanied by soft tissue damage, and restoring ligament integrity is a key strategy for reconstructing joint function. However, existing artificial ligaments face a critical challenge: reconciling robust biomechanical performance with intrinsic self-healing capability, especially under cyclic loading and accidental overload conditions. Conventional materials like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) struggle with long-term durability, while emerging self-healing designs are

OBJECTIVES: Regenerating the periodontium poses a critical challenge in oral medicine. To repair various periodontal defects, it is necessary to adopt a bio-scaffold that provides both the architecture and bioactive cues for local stem cells to migrate, reside, proliferate, and differentiate. The objective of this study is to combine a cell-specific decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) and a biomimetic electrospinning scaffold to regenerate severely destructed periodontium.
METHODS: SEM, water contact angle (WCA), live/dead staining, swelling ratio, tensile test and immune-fluorescent st

Accumulated plastic waste in the environment is a serious problem that poses an ecological threat. Plastic waste has been reduced by initiating and applying different alternative methods from several perspectives, including fungal treatment. Biodegradation of 30 fungi from Thailand were screened in mineral salt medium agar containing low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films. Diaporthe italiana, Thyrostroma jaczewskii, Collectotrichum fructicola, and Stagonosporopsis citrulli were found to grow significantly by culturing with LDPE film as the only sole carbon source compared to those obtained from

BACKGROUND: Abdominal wall hernias commonly occur following laparotomy. Biologic grafts are used to treat these hernias due to their biocompatibility and their ability to serve as a matrix for tissue regeneration and remodeling. Freeze-dried human acellular dermal matrices (F-HADMs) have been shown to be effective in abdominal wall defect repair. Hydrated human acellular dermal matrices (H-HADMs) have not been previously evaluated. This study evaluates H-HADM and F-HADM in the repair of abdominal wall hernias in the rabbit.
METHODS: Thirty-six 3-4-kg New Zealand white rabbits underwent laparo

Basement membranes (BM) are specialized structures of the extracellular matrix. Their composition is of particular importance for the maintenance of normal morphological and functional properties of a multitude of organs and tissue systems and it is thus required for regular homeostasis of body function. Generally, they possess three main functions, i.e. participation in the maintenance of tissue structure, control of fluid and substrate exchange, and regulation of cell growth and differentiation. BMs are made up by various components which are in part specifically localized within the BM zone

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular bypass grafting is an essential treatment for complex cases of atherosclerotic disease. Because the availability of autologous arterial and venous conduits is patient-limited, self-assembled cell-only grafts have been developed to serve as functional conduits with off-the-shelf availability. The unacceptably long production time required to generate these conduits, however, currently limits their clinical utility. Here, we introduce a novel technique to significantly accelerate the production process of self-assembled engineered vascular conduits.

Potential scaffolds for repair of the female pelvic floor require new materials and fabrication by novel methods to improve cellular infiltration. An 'ideal' engineered scaffold for pelvic-floor tissue should mimic the three-dimensional (3D) network of the extracellular matrix (ECM), which possesses intricate macro- and nano-architecture. In this study, a series of blended poly(l-lactide-co-ecaprolactone) P(LLA-CL)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) microyarn/microfibrous scaffolds were produced with different weight ratios via dynamic liquid electrospinning and electrospinning. Both biopolymers

Here we investigated the biomechanical properties of spinal segments in patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) using a novel intraoperative measurement system. The measurement system comprised spinous process holders, a motion generator, a load cell, an optical displacement transducer, and a computer. Cyclic displacement of the holders produced flexion-extension of the segment with all ligamentous structures intact. Stiffness, absorption energy (AE), and neutral zone (NZ) were determined from the load-deformation data. Forty-one patients with DLS (M/F = 15/26, mean age 68.6

INTRODUCTION: Essential Thrombocythemia (ET) and Polycythemia Vera (PV) are two MPNs characterized by a "clonal" overproduction of one or more blood cell lines, hypercoagulability, and an increased incidence of thrombosis. ROTEM is a point of care global coagulation assay performed in whole blood, able to evaluate platelets and fibrinogen contributions to the clotting process. Until now few studies evaluated the thromboelastometry profile of MPN patients.
AIM: This study assess the feasibility of using ROTEM to characterize the prothrombotic state of MPN patients and to evaluate whether the t
