The actions of haloperidol, dextroamphetamine sulfate, levamfetamine succinate, apomorphine, and piribedil were studied in two patients with Giles de la Tourette's disease in an attempt to clarify the catecholamine mechanisms involved in this condition. Both dextroamphetamine and levamfetamine increased the severity of the symptoms; dextroamphetamine was more potent. Haloperidol controlled the symptoms and also antagonized the effect of dextroamphetamine. Apomorphine injections reduced the severity of symptoms, even in the presence of dextroamphetamine. We conclude that dopamine rather than no

OBJECTIVE: The present study compared sleep sufficiency in youth with current Tourette's disorder (TD), history of TD and matched case controls, and examined predictors of sufficient sleep using a large US population-based survey.
METHOD: Participants were 673 caregivers of youth aged 6 to 17 years (298 with current TD, 122 with a history of TD with no endorsement of current diagnosis, and 254 matched case controls) from the 2007 and 2011-2012 versions of the National Survey of Children's Health. History and current TD status, current comorbidity (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anx

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness and safety of the clonidine adhesive patch in treating tic disorders.
METHOD: A total of 437 patients, who met Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders-third edition diagnostic criteria for transient tic disorder (5%), chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (40%) or Tourette disorder (55%), aged 6-18 years, were divided randomly into an active treatment group and a clinical control group. Participants in the active treatment group were treated with a clonidine adhesive patch and participants in the clinical c

OBJECTIVE: This review summarizes research findings on the genetics of several childhood psychiatric disorders.
METHOD: One hundred fifty papers were reviewed from the past several decades and were selected because they have suggested that genetic factors may play a role in the etiology of certain childhood disorders. This review is not meant to be exhaustive but rather has emphasized those disorders for which a genetic etiology has been proposed by different research groups.
RESULTS: The more classical approaches to genetic research are reviewed and critiqued. The status of research for a n

BACKGROUND: Viral and autoimmune encephalitis may present with similar symptoms, but require different treatments. Thus, there is a need for … encephalitis [n = 8], multiple sclerosis [n = 17), and non-inflamed controls (n = 31; Gilles de la Tourette syndrome [n = 20], Bell's palsy with normal CSF cell count [n = 11]). 85 metabolites passed quality screening and were evaluated as biomarkers. Standard diagnostic CSF parameters were assessed for comparison.

Hyperactivity in striatum is associated with compulsive behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related illnesses, but it is un … equenced motor patterns. Together with observations of hyperactivity in pre-SMA/SMA in both OCD and Tourette syndrome, and evidence that pre-SMA is a potential target for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment in OCD, these results support further dissection of the role of M2 in compulsivity.

INTRODUCTION: The basal ganglia (BG) have been implicated in different processes that control action such as the control of movement paramet … tor and cognitive information? Do pathological conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorders or Tourette syndrome result from abnormal afferent limbic input to the BG or abnormal processing within the BG?

OBJECTIVE: To study prevalence and comorbidity of Tourette's disorder in the general population of children and in a clinical setting.
METHODS: School-age children in the general population and children attending a county-wide tic disorder clinic were screened and examined by the same doctor. Behavioral-psychometric instruments with demonstrated reliability and validity were used.
RESULTS: Depending on the sample characteristics, 0.15% to 1.1% of all children had Tourette's disorder. Boys outnumbered girls by 4:1 through 6:1. Attention deficits and empathy/autism spectrum problems (including

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The cigarette industry in the United States (US) laid the foundation for sponsoring research to improve public relations and defend against product liability cases. Fewer threats of litigation facing the US smokeless tobacco (SLT) industry may have contributed to the sponsorship of independent research on SLT use and health outcomes. This study aimed to determine whether the SLT industry used cigarette industry strategies to manipulate research on health risks.
METHODS: Internal industry documents (e.g. letters, memos) from the 1970s through 1990s were accessed through the

Background/Objectives: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) include a wide range of conditions that develop during the formation of the central nervous system, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Tourette syndrome (TS) is another neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by motor and vocal tics, which often co-occurs with ASD and ADHD. This study explores the feasibility of assessing joint hypermobility in children with specific neurodevelopmental conditions by measuring both ankles' passive range of motion (pROM). Methods: This study invo…

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorders (TDs) are closely related and considered to etiologically overlap. Both disorders are characterized by repetitive behaviors. TD and OCD often co-occur. The high comorbidity between OCD and TD individuals suggests that we also need to pay more attention to the homogeneity and heterogeneity between TS and OCD. To date, there has been no systematic nationwide epidemiological survey of the mental health (including tic disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder) of children and adolescents in China. Methods: A two-stage epidemiologi

The current model of basal ganglia organization postulates the existence of a functional partitioning into sensorimotor, associative and limbic territories, implicated in motor, cognitive and emotional aspects of behaviour, respectively. This organization was proposed initially on the basis of the cortico-striatal projections and was extended to the various structures of the basal ganglia. While there is a considerable body of experimental evidence in support of an involvement of the basal ganglia sensorimotor territory in basic control of movements, evidence for the functional relevance of th

We describe a case of encephalitis after primary varicella zoster infection with localised basal ganglia imaging abnormalities. The patient subsequently developed a chronic tic disorder with attention deficit disorder. This case furthers the proposed association between Tourettism and the basal ganglia.

Abnormal movements or postures often present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the psychiatrist or neurologist. The authors review pertinent anatomy and physiology of disorders of the extrapyramidal system, suggest aspects of the clinical history and examination particularly important for diagnosis, and describe a range of abnormal movements. They review several syndromes in which abnormalities of behavior and movement may occur together, including Huntington's chorea, Wilson's disease, Parkinson's disease, and tardive dyskinesia.

This study intended to examine the impact of TD on adult psychosocial functioning. A 29-item self-report questionnaire was mailed to 180 former and current adult TD patients. Adult TD patients reported relatively good psychosocial adjustment although many continued to be dependent upon their families for living and financial support. For adults with TD, personal acceptance and medication use were the most important factors in coping with the disorder. The severity of vocal tics had a much greater influence on adult functioning than the severity of motor tics. Although TD continued to interfere
