French guidelines for the diagnosis and management of Tourette syndrome.

The term "Gilles de la Tourette syndrome", or the more commonly used term "Tourette syndrome" (TS) refers to the association of motor and phonic tics which evolve in a context of variable but frequent psychiatric comorbidity. The syndrome is characterized by the association of several motor tics and at least one phonic tic that have no identifiable cause, are present for at least one year and appear before the age of 18. The presence of coprolalia is not necessary to establish or rule out the diagnosis, as it is present in only 10% of cases. The diagnosis of TS is purely clinical and is based

The Influence of Vitamin D Intake and Status on Mental Health in Children: A Systematic Review.

A potential role of vitamin D in some components of mental health is currently suggested, but the analyses are conducted mainly for adults, while for young individuals mental health is especially important, due to its lifelong effects. The aim of the study was to analyze the association between vitamin D intake or status and mental health in children within a systematic review of literature, including both intervention and observational studies. The literature search was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and it covered peer-reviewed studies included in databases of PubMed and Web of

The therapeutic alliance in the treatment of personality disorders.

Because personality disorders are associated with significant impairment in interpersonal relationships, special issues and problems arise in the formation of a therapeutic alliance in the treatment of patients with these disorders. In particular, patients with narcissistic, borderline, and paranoid personality traits are likely to have troubled interpersonal attitudes and behaviors that will complicate the patient's engagement with the therapist. While a strong positive therapeutic alliance is predictive of more successful treatment outcomes, strains and ruptures in the alliance may lead to p

5-HT2C receptor agonists: pharmacological characteristics and therapeutic potential.

In vitro, (S)-2-(chloro-5-fluoro-indol-1-yl)-1-methylethylamine 1:1 C4H4O4 and (S)-2-(4,4,7-trimethyl-1,4-dihydro-indeno[1, 2-b]pyrrol-1-yl)-1-methylethylamine 1:1 C4H4O4 exhibited high-affinity binding to the serotonin2C (5HT2C) receptors and stimulated turnover of inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate. Affinity to several of the other 5-HT receptor subtypes and to numerous nonserotonergic receptors was much lower. In rats, both compounds elicited behavioral signs of 5-HT2C receptor agonism but not 5-HT2A receptor agonism. Hypomotility induced in rats by high doses of these compounds was reversed by th

Body image dissatisfaction and emotional eating across age and weight status: a comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity in older adults is associated with significant medical, functional, and psychological consequences, including body image dissatisfaction and maladaptive eating behaviors such as emotional eating. Although these associations have been extensively studied in younger populations, limited evidence is available in older adults with obesity. This study aimed to examine differences in body dissatisfaction by age and weight status and its association with emotional eating in adults and older adults with obesity. METHODS: 108 participants were included and divided into four subgrou

Associations among problematic smartphone use, depression, and sleep disturbance in Chinese college students: a three-wave longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbance (SD) is highly prevalent among college students and has been consistently linked to depressive symptoms (DEP). Problematic smartphone use (PSU), increasingly common among young people, has similarly been implicated in sleep problems and psychological distress. Nevertheless, the longitudinal relationship between PSU and SD and the role of DEP within this association remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: Using three-wave longitudinal data collected between April 2024 and April 2025 from 6,153 Chinese college students, this study applied a random intercept cr

The Therapeutic Effects of Dietary Supplements on OCD: A Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Sufficient amounts of nutrients have been considered important in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In recent years, many studies have examined alleviating symptoms of neurological and behavioral disorders through nutritional change. Thus, we aim to synthesize current knowledge on serum levels of nutrients and other nutraceuticals and their potential impact on OCD symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a targeted literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus, including clinical investigations and relevant animal research in June 2025, without applying any pu

(No) attentional biases in obsessive-compulsive disorder? An eye-tracking study using idiosyncratic stimulus material.

Cognitive-behavioral theories propose that attentional biases contribute to the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, research findings have been inconsistent, with some studies supporting vigilance (i.e., rapid orientation toward threatening material) and/or maintenance biases (i.e., difficulty disengaging from threatening material), and others showing either one or neither of these biases. These inconsistencies may be related to several limitations of previous studies (e.g., no clinical control groups, focus on subgroups of participants with OCD, and us

Comparing the Metabolic Profile of Patients Affected by Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome PANS and Tourette Syndrome: Preliminary Data.

Background: Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) shares numerous clinical features with Tourette syndrome (TS), notably the presence of tics and frequent comorbidities such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, irritability, and ADHD-like behaviors, often indistinguishable, particularly in the early stages of the two syndromes. Also, pathogenic similarities between PANS and TS constitute a diagnostic challenge, highlighting the need for biomarkers elucidating the underpinnings of the two disorders. In this context, metabolomics has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying disti

Psychiatric manifestations in Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are rare genetic neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive cognitive, motor, and visual decline. The transition from supportive care to emerging disease-modifying therapies has reshaped the clinical landscape of NCLs and highlighted the urgent need for sensitive and clinically meaningful outcome measures beyond traditional motor and survival endpoints. Psychiatric manifestations, which profoundly affect daily functioning and quality of life, represent a potentially valuable yet underexplored domain. METHODS: We conducted a syste

Epigenetic markers of response to psychotherapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely used treatment for mental disorders, yet the biological mechanisms underlying its effects and the factors contributing to treatment response remain poorly understood. DNA methylation, an epigenetic mechanism shaped by both genetic and environmental influences, may provide insights into individual differences in psychotherapy outcomes. We performed an epigenome-wide association study of psychotherapy response in 889 adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) receiving the Bergen 4-Day Treatment, an intensive, concentrated exposure-based interv

Exploring the shared genetic architecture and causal relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychiatric disorders.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a major risk factor for psychiatric disorders, yet the shared genetic etiology, potential causal effects, and mediating pathways underlying these associations remain incompletely understood. We investigated the shared genetic architecture, potential causal relationships, and candidate mediating pathways linking genetically proxied reported CM with major psychiatric disorders. Summary statistics were obtained from large-scale genome-wide association studies of CM and 10 psychiatric disorders. Genetic correlations were estimated using linkage disequilibrium score r

Genome-Wide Association Study of Exercise Addiction Among Elite Wrestlers.

BACKGROUND: Exercise addiction, marked by an inability to control exercise and associated with distress that clinically impairs daily activities, is a significant but underrecognized issue in physical activity and health. While its physiological, psychological, and behavioral aspects have been studied, the genetic basis of exercise addiction remains poorly understood, requiring further investigation. The present study conducted a genome-wide association study of exercise addiction among elite Turkish wrestlers. METHODS: The sample comprised 67 male wrestlers (34 freestyle wrestlers and 33 Gre

A roadmap for focused ultrasound applications in psychiatry: Proceedings of the 2024 symposium on focused ultrasound in psychiatry (FUS-PULSE).

Transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) is an emerging neuromodulation modality that enables incisionless, spatially precise targeting of deep brain structures implicated in neuropsychiatric conditions. Growing clinical applications in FUS psychiatry encompass both transient and permanent bioeffects, including focal lesioning, neurostimulation, and targeted drug delivery. In response to rapid advances in the field, an in-person multidisciplinary symposium, FUS-PULSE, was held in Toronto, Canada from June 5-7 2024. The meeting convened over 70 international experts across neurosurgery, psychiatry

Pre-CBT resting-state connectivity and white matter integrity in OCD remission: A multimodal MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is commonly treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), yet many patients fail to achieve remission. Neuroimaging markers, such as pre-treatment functional and structural connectivity, may help elucidate OCD pathology and CBT mechanisms, and predict treatment outcomes. This study investigates the relationship between pre-treatment functional and structural connectivity and remission status in OCD patients following CBT. METHODS: Thirty-three OCD patients underwent multimodal MRI, including resting-state fMRI to assess pre-treatment function

Acceptance of a sensor-based online psychotherapy for adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (SSTeP-KiZ).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: E-mental health interventions with use of cognitive behavioral therapy methods and therapist contact via video have been well established in their effectiveness for various mental illnesses. With the help of sensors worn on the body, relevant contextual information can be made visible. In the SSTeP-KiZ study, the feasibility of a multimodal sensor system was tested, which was used in video-based psychotherapy for adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder during therapy sessions in the home environment. The present study investigated the acceptance and satisfaction of p

Aversion-resistant alcohol seeking in the human laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Aversion-resistant, or "compulsive," drinking is well-studied as a preclinical model of alcohol use disorder. Human studies have largely relied on subjective self-report of aversion-resistant drinking. The goal of this study was to develop and test a behavioral model of aversion-resistant alcohol seeking in the human laboratory, facilitating translational research on this important risk factor. METHODS: A sample of 84 adults aged 21-55 (mean age = 32.2 years, 54.8% female, 58.3% white) who endorsed heavy alcohol use (mean AUDIT = 11.3, SD = 5.6) completed an interview/screening se

Panic disorder and suicide.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD) may increase the likelihood of suicidal ideation and behaviors because of psychiatric comorbidities such as major depressive disorder (MDD). However, research has yet to demonstrate a direct relationship between PD and suicide mortality. METHOD: Using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 171,737 individuals with PD and 686,948 age- and sex-matched individuals without PD during 2003-2017. We assessed the risk of suicide within the same period. Psychiatric comorbidities such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, MDD, obsessi
